You're actually telling businesses that they will be required to hire diversely and it is in their interests to see that formerly blocked segments of the population are given access to education and training to make them qualified.

I've lost at least one job to a less qualified female minority person. My response? It's not much of a sacrifice compared to stumbling off a landing craft into the surf under intense machine gun and artillery fire. It's not much of an impediment compared to not even being considered for a job because of race or sexuality.

Now women and minorities compete for jobs because there are openings. I've worked for each, mostly women, and as a group they've all been at least as good as white men like me.

It's not a huge contribution, but it's my part in making it a better nation.

History didn't start yesterday. To quote the Animals:

It's a hard world to get a break in
All the good things have been taken

    They deserve their shot.

Wait until it’s your more qualified son or daughter getting passed over. Oh noes, people hire people they know or have connections with. With now even Harvard announcing they will no longer be requiring SAT/ACT scores, like the UC system, we are well on the way to reaching the point where college admissions and job placement criteria will be based on racial quotas. Affirmative action/diversity policies do not benefit me or my family since we are Iranians and like Cuban-Americans we are too successful and rich to benefit from such largesse. We don’t fit in the aggrieved and oppressed minority ethnic group category. @Alien Octopus I assume is from either Venezuela or Cuba and like me understands where extremism ends up. The white guilt crowd might not like where this ends up.

Never go to the comments section of any news story if you're looking for well thought out, well tempered reactions. People think CR is a cesspool. It has nothing on Facebook and news story comments sections.

My comments to newspaper articles are where I bring out my best stuff. You’re missing out.

I'd rather be real with my opinion and have what is perceived as the low ground than just side with the narrative for the moral high ground.  Not saying everyone who disagrees with me is doing that.  I'm sure a few believe all the players demands are perfectly reasonable.  But there is a lot of pandering and white guilt going on here.

If we were to make a list of attributes that the Cabal shares, pandering and white guilt would be high on the list.

  4. If the players are following Prof. Gordon's lead, these statements of his seem to indicate that having conversations and addressing the history of the song would be enough to keep it IMO. Thankfully our administration is taking those steps.

“What I think is that we need to use these images to teach us about what the past was and as a warning of how not addressing the past can lead to a reproduction of these inequities,” he said. “And then we need to take the action necessary in the present to move beyond the past, whether or not we take down those statues.”

If the university is not prepared to address past inequities, Gordon said, “I’m for eliminating them. But if we are prepared to use these tools as some form of scarlet letter to warn us about the shame of our past and to push us forward to the future, I would say we should keep them.

If you’re going to own up to your past and use it as a basis for a continual reminder that you’re trying to be different in the present than in the past, I think there is every reason to keep them.”

Get rid of every Confederate statue in this country and put them in the museum called Losers and Traitors to their Country. We are Texas. I never have understood why anyone from Texas would want to glorify that sad chapter of our state's history. We have a great history of our own with the best state flag with a barrel full of heroes and greats. We are not Mississippi that needs to glom onto the pathetic Confederacy.

  6. What needs to happen quickly is for the players to understand that the "Eyes of Texas are upon you" does not in any way refer to a slave master's eyes never leaving his slaves. There is nothing to support that interpretation. The lyrics to the Eyes intentionally mocks Prather who would parrot Robert E Lee's "Eyes of the South are upon you" that he'd heard when he was a student at W&L. Last I checked, there were no slaves at that time nor any blacks attending W&L. The song is making fun of Robert E Lee's saying. That does not support the claim that the song is racist. I am pissed about this because I am a history nerd - if this song had racist lyrics or sung with racist intent then get rid of it. At least then we would have a historical record of racist intent. Scrapping the alma mater based on fake history is bullshit and offensive and runs counter to the entire mission of the university in promoting knowledge and the seeking of truth. Explore the history of the minstrel shows. Denounce them. Use this as a source of reconciliation and greater understanding to unify all of us. The Eyes of Texas are upon US.

Your side in this seems very heels dug in about dropping the song, tearing down statues, renaming buildings, or whatever the newest demand is made based on what is determined to be offensive without pushback.

That should he the motto for the cabal. Their members have chimed in to shut down this thread.

If a song can tear our fan base apart, then so be it. It’s just a song. It’s on those fans who choose to turn their back on this program because of a song with questionable origins.

What I have suggested would involve the core function of the university -  research, historical analysis and reasoned debate with an outcome of reconciliation and joint understanding. The method you advocate is for continued cancel culture tactics that’s resulted in nothing but anger, recrimination and a mob action ethos that has led to major backlash in other situations. Want to avoid that for our university

Sure. Are you fine with a giant PSA before the Eyes are sung that talks about the history of the song including the minstrel shows? I mean others have put up a historical context of the song's history and you think these contexts are dubious.

Yes I’m fine with doing that. What I’m against is labeling something sung for decades without racial animus of alumni of all types as racist. Judge, jury and execution with no debate makes me sick. Investigate the history further. Make singing the EYES inclusive every week with “WE are the EYES” as @Bruno Sardine suggested. Getting rid of the Alma mater because SOME players THOUGHT it meant the eyes were on slaves is just wrong on so many levels. The assertion is false and getting rid of something cherished on a false basis will tear this fanbase apart. Don’t do that.

  10. This the brave new world we live. Demands by some of our players based on flimsy circumstantial connection to a minstrel show renders cherished Alma mater irredeemably racist and verboten with no debate lest those of us like myself question the basis of such insanity. The majority of our fans are not going to have any issue with this it all I’m sure. I hope our big money donors have called into CDC this morning threatening to pull their donations and fuck with the capital campaign if the Eyes is removed. This is America. Money talks

Now that The Eyes issue is out on the table it's going to become a "taking a knee" issue if they continue to play it after games. Many fans/players will refuse to sing it and those that do will look like assholes, especially white people. UNLESS, a result of conversations between CDC and the players results in them coming away ok with it and those players lead on it. But that is not likely.

I do like the idea of singing Don't Stop Believing instead. And/or just Texas Fight, which is actually our "song'.

You can thank our social justice warrior players for taking an innocuous song sung by generations of Longhorns of all races into a culture war flashpoint. This does nothing for police reform. Destroying the program from within that’s what’s going on. Thanks to the players for turning our Alma mater into a flash point in the culture war. As for me, I will sing the Eyes LOUDER at the end of the game. Also you should be booed mercilessly for saying it should be replaced by Don’t Stop Believing. Why not Sweet Caroline so we can completely be generic.

No, everything is not politics. But all your terms like "outside agitators" is exactly the language he uses and you've said before how you're such a huge fan and would give yourself willing to him. Okay, I made that last part up.

Nah it’s complete out of the realm of possibility that our rivals wouldn’t seek to wreak havoc on us. I mean it’s not like they don’t have a playbook on how that was done on a national scale.

    They want fair pay
    “Where will it end?”
They want access to home loans
    “Where will it end?”
They want to marry different races
    “Where will it end?”
They want equal protection under and from the law
    “Where will it end?”
They want to remove the constant reminders of our overt racist history against them
    “Where will it end?”

Right. Such oppression with the Eyes. Something these players knew shit about until they became unwitting pawns. They’re so brave. Anyone who wants to throw away the history and heritage associated with our Alma mater can go fuck themselves. CDC should say all the right lip service bs about listening to their grievances and then firmly tell them to fuck off we aren’t dropping it.  This will destroy our attendance. It’s going to go over like a lead balloon with our average alum or t-shirt fan.

Fascinating that there are different levels of success between two black populations (Nigerians and native-born African Americans).  I wonder what possible explanations there could be?  Could the history and generational issues the disparate groups have experienced have had any effect?

Slavery, Jim Crow, and institutionalized racism have a LONG tail.  Recent immigrants have only had to deal with the remaining tail.  That's a much easier hill to climb.  I mean, ther are literally books that have analyzed much of this.  It's why recent immigrants of almost any type do better than even their predecessors of the same race.  We aren't as shitty racist as we used to be, so the path is a lot clearer for folks just now startin

So since 2009 Professor Gordon was at his position of Associate Professor, African and African Diaspora Studies Department, University of Texas at Austin. I’m just gonna go ahead and blame him and the Eyes now for our football ineptitude since then.

What is the quality of Professor Gordon’s research and sourcing backing his claims that the Eyes are racist? Can someone cite his work beyond the video. Campus agitators always demand more or these grievance studies departments and professorships not because of the academic value they bring but rather as a vehicle used to keep hammering away at our bedrock foundations. Universities are due for a major course correction. Hope the cash and student crunch from COVID puts a dent in fluff departments like these.
