    We don't know the family.

I expected these responses, and they are in line with my gut feelings.  For one thing, I can't in good conscience tell my kids to pay attention to troubled peers and say something if they are concerned, and then not do anything when a kid actually reaches out.  I've learned that hypocrisy is a bad parenting tool.  That said, the idea of getting on the bad side of a potential sociopath is discomforting to say the least.

Go with your gut. If there is no way to get in touch with the family through known channels your attempts will likely be rejected - parents don't want to be told anything bad about their kids and the immediate reaction will be negative unless they have some reason to believe you and/or your daughter. Giving them the evidence pretty much ensures the kid will know who gave it to them and put your daughter and family in a more dangerous situation.

While going to the police is pretty much always my option of last resort, I think this is a case that warrants it unless you feel moving it up the chain to another agency is a better idea. Regardless, for your families safety, I think it best to judge the actual personnel involved before providing anything which could be used to implicate your daughter in turning him in.

So my daughter is familiar with a kid at her HS who has been hinting at some fairly dark stuff via Snapchat.  I'm not going to pretend I know all the ins and outs of the app, but some of it has been public and some has been in private communication with her.  She was worried enough that she screen-capped a couple of statements, the act of which apparently cannot be hidden from the other party.

Basically, it comes down to threats to harm himself and others.  The "others" part is so ludicrous as to be hand-waved away in a literal sense ("I could wipe this place out with an atomic bomb" or some such), but the threat is still real.  In her private communications she asked if he wanted to hurt himself, which he affirmed.

So here's the rub:  if she reveals the latter to authorities and they engage him, he'll most likely know it was her who called in the alert.  If she simply reveals the "public" disclosures, he'll have a pretty good clue, but not nearly so concrete.  We're obviously concerned about retaliation; we're also concerned about this kid and others.

Given that school is out, it doesn't seem like there are many options beyond informing the police.  During the school year, I suppose it might be sufficient to inform the school principal.  Yes?  No?  Thoughts?  Advice?  No pics.

Very difficult situation. If you know the parents directly or indirectly through other friends, you may want to reach out to them. However, I think it is also a good idea to notify authorities with the public information and after you meet with them and get a feel for their level of competence, decide whether they can be trusted to keep the personal information shared with your daughter confidential to avoid retaliation.

Seems like it may be a cry for help in some respects if he's sharing that he wants to harm himself and the parents should be made aware. The threats against others should be taken seriously, even if the methods laid out are ludicrous. I think in some cases, kids reach out on things like this to see if anyone is actually paying attention to them and taking them seriously. If so, hopefully help can be provided. But if not, it just reinforces that nobody (in their mind) cares about them and makes it easier to kill themselves and/or others.

My $0.02. Good luck, not an enviable position for your daughter or family.

  3. Man, I could not disagree with most of y’all more...i fucking love this shit and this may be my favorite golf tourney in history. So much better than guys fighting it out between -18 and -20. This course is bringing incredible dynamics of mental toughness and strategy on each shot into play like none other. These absolute fucking pussy professional golfers crying like little bitches might actually be enhancing it for me. Guys are going on runs and then being slapped back down for not staying down and getting cocky (see DJ).
My least favorite major because it routinely turns golf into putt putt courses. There is an official putt putt tour if you are interested in clown courses.

This should be setup to determine the best golfer in our nation's championship. Today was very on the edge but became clear on the last 6 holes that it was over the top because the USGA failed to consider actual projections of the conditions and created an unfair advantage for people playing earlier in the day.
  4. Tomorrow could be bad because the greens dried up. Most of the day things were ok but on the edge. Later in the day it was pretty clear on the last few holes the greens were lost in the last several groups.

I've seen much more egregious conditions for the US Open, but the last 6-8 holes were unfair to the later groups compared to the earlier groups. That sucks.

It's unfortunate that the USGA decides it wants to protect par so badly that it compromises the greatness of the courses it selects. These courses are great tests because they are great courses, not because the greens are on the edge of unplayable.

Good to see everyone going HAM on the USGA. They pretty much suck.

  5. Would you like a second chance at this post after that shot Koepka just hit on 15?
I said the back nine could get bad earlier. Looks like it's getting there quickly. If you've read my thoughts in the past US Opens you know I'm no fan of the setup.

I wouldn't say Koepka hot a great shot. 20 ft short right from 130, but it shouldn't finish up in the bunker.

I will say that Zach Johnson said they lost the course which could mean the last few holes on the back nine are near unplayable.
  6. Definitely a different course, but some of the shots these guys are hitting are garbage. Stenson just left an iron 30 yards short.

Good shots are being rewarded and landing soft and staying near the holes for the most part. Hoffman's shot there notwithstanding (alright it was still 25-30 ft long).

  7. Most everyone in the later groups is simply playing like shit. DJ has hit some horrendous shots and his putting is worse than any of the leaders.

Rose is hitting it like shit.

    Nobody looks particularly sharp.

They haven't lost the course. It's close and the greens are on the edge, especially the shitty Poa just bouncing all over the place. But other than Phil hammering that putt that led to the 10, I haven't seen short putts running 25' off the green. They are definitely trickling of a few feet.

That said, the US Open is probably my least favorite major because they do trick up the course so much that it's not a true judge of the best players and his shots are penalized. Today there are just a bunch of bad shots by the leaders and the greens are sick enough to make part difficult.

    Back none could change though.

  8. FYI for those in Houston. I was in Zadok's last week and they are going to have a Tudor trunk show to introduce the new releases tomorrow evening (June 12th). Call to confirm because I don't see it on their website. I don't know the details other than that but I'm considering checking it out.

Looking for a nice, everyday luxury sports watch that can do everything from work to the beach and Tudor might be the choice for something relatively inexpensive.

That said, I tried on the VC Overseas and it is a great looking watch. Hefty pricetag, but very nice and amazingly wearable/light even with the SS. The AP RO was very nice too but they only had the Rose Gold and I need something in stainless.

  9. Water was gorgeous last weekend. Hopefully it continues through much of the summer.

    Homecut donuts are awesome.

Olympia the Grill has very solid food. Both locations but the Pier side is a little nicer.

Trattoria La Vignia is great for Italian

Mario's (westside) had awesome pizza. The one on 61st is hit or miss.

Riondo's is ok but didn't blow me away.
