Buchanan watershed getting it right now. if it holds together Llano river and LBJ watershed are next, could make it's way into Travis after that. long line, horizontal across the highland lakes region.  should all be runoff at this point.  wow.

    Hell yeah!

The Road to 670 starts NOW!

  2. Holy cow, I've been out of pocket today and just heard the news.

I'm both surprised, and unsurprised by it.  I guess I just didn't think it would happen quite yet, even if the writing seems to have been on the wall for a while.

It would be pretty crazy for RBR to ditch Horner, then still lose Max, after already losing Newey.  That's a lot of big blows in succession.

That theory doesn't hold any water.

    But Lake Travis does!

Up to 658.6, so now it's 21' up and still rising, if much slower.

LCRA reports that flood operations at Wirtz and Starcke have concluded for the time being.

I love that sauce.  Been thinking it would make a good glaze on pork, but didn't want to burn the sugar in it.  When did you add the sauce to the meat?

Sugar begins to caramelize at 311 and burns at 350.  That's another reason folks like to smoke at 225, very little risk of burning any sugar in the rub or in a glaze.

I was jeered when I said I loved Black Widow, but I thought it was an A-tier MCU movie based on what you said above. I think Black Widow coming out during covid made it fly under the radar too maybe.

I think you're right, and I also don't think it helped that Natasha was already dead after Endgame.  I enjoyed the movie but my kids who'd loved the entire MCU up to that point, had no desire to see Black Widow because "she's already dead, dad.  What's the point?"

Anything like this worth opening any floodgates at LBJ?  (I don't know what the threshold is for them to make the call)

Yeah I suspect that will be enough to get them to open up floodgate operations at Wirtz.

Llano and Pedernales are flowing quite nicely right now. I think that has to have a quality impact on Travis.  I could be wrong.  The elevation increase is taking longer.

Either way, we haven't seen numbers like this since April 2022!

Streamflows in the 2K-5K range tend to move the lake by inches.  It takes streamflows in the 20K+ range like we saw on Saturday, to move it by multiple feet, especially the closer we get to 680.  It has substantially tapered off since its peak 2 days ago despite some heavy rains yesterday.

But, there's still quite a bit of rain out there. It would be great to see LT hit 660 or even greater, as a result of all of this.  It's gone up 1/10th just in the time we've been discussing it this morning.

I dont think you are taking into account that the 24 hour rainfall numbers for LCRA show no fewer than 20 rain gauges that end up in Buchanan, LBJ or LT, showing over 1 inch of rain in the last 24 hours (4 of those showing more than 2 inches), plus its still raining in some parts of the drainage basin, with the ground being soaked already, a lot of that rain is going to end up in LT.

I know its a metric fuckton of rain to take it from 657 to 660... but there will be runoff for at least another week (probably 2) hitting the 3 main lakes,

I think 660 is almost a certainty in the next week.

Sure hope so, I wouldn't complain.

  9. Heavy rain firing back up in the highland lakes basin, north and west of Austin.  Lake Travis now up 19.3 feet since 8 AM Friday to a level of 656.9, and Lake Buchanan up 8.6 feet to a level of 1,011.17.

I'd predicted around a 20' rise for Travis but I was really hoping it'd get all the way to 660.  It could still go up a few inches or a foot over the next few days, but I don't think it'll quite hit 660 now.

  10. Gauges at Hamilton Creek and Big Sandy are still borked, but Cow Creek is operating.  This one was down to 1 cfs just a couple hours ago, now rising again, currently at 1.27K cfs.  Yesterday it peaked at 57K and at some point during that event, is when the bridge at 1431 and Cow Creek washed out..

This thread is still filled with non weather posts so idgaf.

You should probably just take a break for a while.  Seriously, you're better than this.  Usually.

I wanted weather only and news separate. News is recovery and failed leadership imo. But the split didn’t happen so idgaf. But if you think our failure to care for these kids isn’t news well I don’t know what else to say.

What are you talking about?  There's a specific DT thread for news about the event.  It's right here:

As for the rest of your bullshit statement,  you have no idea what I think or feel.

Unbelievable isn’t it? 70+ dead and it’s quite clear many of those could be avoided, yet we censor the news of failed leadership because “fuck your feelings” is a thing.

I'm confused by this post from you.  You have been suggesting all day to split the discussion of the tragedy/ongoing rescue efforts/fallout/aftermath onto a different thread, because this is the rain thread.  And that is the appropriate action and there's now a DT thread for the news about the sad and tragic event itself.

There's plenty of news discussion that can be had that isn't (necessarily) CR material, but it's still off topic for THIS thread.  Which is exactly what I've been saying for the past 2 days, and what you've been saying today.

    Update:
Interesting battle going on right now... some drier air is trying to work NW from our SE counties, and the disturbance is hanging out to our NW. The rain area is mostly north of Williamson into North Central Texas and trying hard to expand S and SE - where the dry air is at least for now dissipating much of it.

As this battle goes, so will go our flooding this afternoon... if the rains can come in from the N/NW then it's a concern. If the air over ATX can keep putting it out, drier with maybe scattered lighter showers.

RIght now it's a tossup but the defense is holding.

Word.  Except in the face of overwhelming catastrophic force like the past few days, my bet is always on the Austin FF.  It is a power unto itself.
