also, defining success, or a coachβs job being βimpressiveβ based solely on winning trophies is the dumbest possible way to support a football club. just be a madrid, bayern, and psg fan and call it a day if thatβs how you feel. this isnβt binary; this isnβt βwin a trophy and thatβs impressive (see: this terrible tottenham team/season), or donβt win a trophy and you suckβ. thatβs such a fanatical, childish way to look at it.
the transformation that those of us whoβve actually been paying attention to arsenal have seen has been amazing. the stability and competitiveness of the club is night and day from what it was when arteta arrived- night and day. he got rid of all the deadwood and terrible contracts, heβs recruited and signed a ton of young talent who are still entering their primes, and he has the club set up to be competitive for major trophies for years to come. weβve gone from old and terrible david luiz and sokratis at the back to young and burgeoning saliba and gabriel, for example. and heβs had arsenal playing better and advancing farther than 95% of the league without having any support from the board to buy the strikers heβs wanted (which is about to change now that weβve dropped edu for andrea berta).
thatβs impressive. if youβre only impressed by trophies then ghats certainly your prerogative, but itβs dumb. it means youβre more impressed by ange and tottenham than arsenal and arteta. just a painfully stupid way to assess βimpressiveβ.
TIL that UT Football has had exactly 4 impressive teams. damn.
