  1. I don't really take much exception to your points here. Perhaps to simplify, I'd say OSU with a clear advantage at WR, while TX has it at QB and DL. The other positions kinda fall into the "well we like our guys and you like yours so let's just suit em up" category. It's close enough IMO that the natural breaks inherent to the game, and how each team responds, probably decide the outcome. With its coaching consistency I think TX should be a slight favorite going in, since the bevy of unknowns is otherwise pretty much equally weighted on both sides.
  2. Aye, I agree on the difference between the RBs and meant they are comparable in terms of production. I think OSU plans to use its duo at RB much like we did last year, with complementary styles to help fill situational roles and keep guys fresh. FWIW you make a good point on the running QB - I think part of what helped OSU's running game last year was Howard's ability to run, which had been missing from that position during the Stroud/McCord days. Manning will bring a lot to the table in that respect.
  3. Howard was a beast throughout the CFP by pretty much any reasonable estimation, IMO. I can't really blame him for the Michigan game because he just got sucked into the same voodoo vortex that inexplicably swallowed the whole team that day. That entire game was a starkly clear carbon copy of Cooper's home loss to M in 1996 (which cost him the national title), where a badass offense led by Joe Germaine scored 9 points and blew an undefeated season to a 4-loss skunkweasel outfit (only to follow it up with a Rose Bowl win that kept ASU from the national championship).
  4. Fair on the new guy comment, understood. Only pointing out reasons why I like the OSU secondary beyond just Downs. Re: RB, if Baxter is full go I would pick TX at the position for sure - he was excellent before the injury but as far as I understand you are not expecting him to be at that level again yet. Wisner is a good back, I like him. He and Donaldson seem comparable - almost the same YPC, Wisner with more yards on more carries, Donaldson with 2X the TDs. Call it wash, perhaps - the units don't suit up against each other anyway and TX probably has the advantage in the defensive front 7, which will have a greater impact on the running game.
  5. I've only stated that I think OSU has an advantage at certain positions (WR, possibly OL / DB / TE / RB) which shouldn't really be such a shock, nor can it represent anything other than my guesses - what else would it be? And of course TX has the chance to prove me wrong, such is the point of the game.
  6. Responding to a couple points - yes, Igbinosun is a penalty nightmare which drives OSU fans BONKERS, but he also makes a lot of great plays and is a net positive overall. His ridiculous interception at PSU might have been the difference in the game. And at the other CB spot, Mathews is not really a "new guy" - he's played a lot and played well. For RB, we've seen enough of Peoples to know he's going to be good - and as I said any advantage OSU has there is probably contingent on TX RB health.
  7. I'm not trying to gaslight anybody - it's just, like, my opinion, man. The biggest thing I'm getting out of this now is that we've entered into a QB hairdo debate. Everything else we'll just have to see on the field.
  8. Hah, the only place I post is here and sometimes on Reddit.
  9. I know TX certainly has talented players and might do just fine at OL - I'm just responding to the poster who seemed to think the OSU line was completely revamped. The only loss from the CFP line was Jackson - which was a big one of course, but the other returnees all showed out well last year. I think the bigger issue for OSU is replacing both the OC and the OL position coach - that has potential to really screw things up for a while. I think OL coach Frye did an incredible job last season....and apparently the NFL thought so too.
  10. For OSU, 4/5 OL positions are returning starters. Talent/experience-wise, I would take OSU at OL, WR (easily), TE, defensive secondary. Perhaps at RB depending on TX health status. I think talent and experience are more or less a wash overall between the two teams. As stated in my initial post, I'd give TX with a slight advantage at QB because of Manning's game experience, and a bigger advantage on the sideline because OSU is breaking in new coordinators. If forced to predict I'd say TX wins 28-24 but one play could break the game in either direction.
  11. Most OSU message-board fans I've seen are not super excited about Patricia and expect some pains in the early going. He was not a popular hire (especially compared to Knowles, who was somewhat of a slam dunk). Scuttlebutt from fall camp is that things have been going well with him so far, but there's really nothing else to say about it until we see something on the field to judge him by.
  12. I can't believe that 1) replay is at least a decade old by this point, and 2) it's not working better by now
  13. Well, one time under John Cooper we did also have a WR who pulled a Full Blutarsky 0.0 GPA. (That one was a personal favorite, actually. He eventually went back to school in his 30s and graduated with a GPA of 3.5). FWIW that same year we did kick the snot out of A&M in the Sugar Bowl.
  14. It was an unmitigated black-market tattoo free-for-all...a dark time for everyone involved
  15. Pretty much. They were cruising during/after the PSU game until [eventual Remington winner] McLaughlin went out for the season. The quick breather before the CFP gave them time to right the ship.
