  1. How does TX feel about its running backs this year? Blue was a scary beast and I'm glad (for this week) that he's gone.
  2. It doesn't make sense to me to pick the OSU secondary to attack, as that's likely to be our defensive strength. It's true that Downs isn't a "cover corner" type of safety but he has great ball instincts and isn't often caught out of position. Meanwhile, we have a lot less experience in the front 7, especially at DL, so (please forgive if this is obvious) I would think your game plan would be to establish the running game on our green DL, force Downs el al to come help at the LoS then let Manning beat them over the top.
  3. You might be right and I'm not a stats guy. Just know the OSU OL was baller in the second half of last season and through the playoffs.
  4. Your OL vs our DL seems like weak vs weak to me - both with inexperienced talent at hand. The opposite is true if you flip the units. We really need our OL to give Sayin time to work or it's gonna be a long nooner.
  5. The Patricia hire really worries me. Not that he can't figure it out, and not that he doesn't have lots of talent to utilize, but in game 1 against Texas? Yikes. (Going into last year some people were apparently knocking the Chip Kelly OC hire, but that one always made a lot of sense to me. It put Kelly back in his happy place. This one? I dunno at all, it's a complete black box).
  6. If it were me I'd try to get as much heat on Sayin as possible and mix up the coverages something fierce. Zone blitzes, disguised coverages, etc. If you don't make him uncomfortable and he gets time, someone will be running free - Tate, Klare, Inniss, the RBs.
  7. Haha - thanks. I'll bring along my google maps just as a backup.
  8. Howdy folks - Buckeye in Austin here, checking back in for the first time this season. Best of luck to y'all this weekend. I have zero feel for how this game is going to go - both sides with obviously extreme talent but inexperience at some very important positions. I think TX has a slight edge at QB given Arch's game experience last year, and a significant edge on the sideline since we will be breaking in two new fresh coordinators (even though Hartline will have a nice safety net given that Day has spent most of his career calling plays). Calling it a wash over the other positions (TX with an advantage at DL and LB, OSU at OL and WR, etc) I would expect TX to pull out a close win, and a blowout in either case seems extremely unlikely...but playing this monster in Game 1 just adds an unaccountable weirdness factor. My 6-year-old daughter fortunately loves me very much and wants to root for OSU to make me happy, but as the lone actual Austinite in the family she is torn. She'll be wearing a TX dress underneath her OSU hoodie for this one.
  9. Thanks! I probably should, since this summer we have a whole nother game for which to prepare our psyches.
  10. The 2005 game vs TX was outstandingly bad in that respect. A combo of overhype, overdrinking, and night games still being a novelty at the time. It has improved greatly since then but I don't blame you for your resentment. FWIW I had a similar experience as a visiting fan at Penn State just a few weeks after that game. No fun. Here I'll double down on my problem...I'm also an Eagles fan, inasmuch as I pay attention to the NFL.
  11. Thanks! Glad we got at least one of y'all 😉 That definitely has to be the minority stance around most of the country. Not that we've been winning titles hand over fist or anything, but as consistent as we are I imagine Ohio State fatigue set in for most people sometime around, oh, 1972. I guess it's a cross we must bear. And anyway, Freeman may have improved Notre Dame's likeability quotient, but it's still Notre Dame. I was raised to consider them Enemy #1B, so it's easy to revert to that for the next week.
  12. Hey all. Figured I'd give you the weekend before sending in my postmortem. Texas had a great gameplan and played exactly the way they needed to. They were one of the few teams in the field that could drop so much into coverage and still get pressure on Howard - your secondary is legit and they made this game close. In fact I think the two best defenses in CFB were on the field Friday night. IMO Ewers played an outstanding game, outside of his inability to escape pressure in the pocket. His little last-split-second flip to keep your 2nd scoring drive going likely would have been the play of the game had you pulled it out. I know you're ready for the Manning Moment, but Ewers and Sarkisian have brought you back to prominence and I'm thankful for that. On that note, I agree with the criticism of that late goal-line pitch play (we had just tried a similar thing earlier on 3rd and inches, and also failed) but overall Sark has done an unbelievable job of building the program and hopefully you all are enjoying the ride. He's done WAY better than I anticipated when he was hired. With his recruiting I expect you'll be playing on this stage on a regular basis going forward.
  13. Mob rule, insofar as there are actual decisions being made.
  14. Oh I remember that 2005 game vs USC. I had no affiliation w TX at the time (other than having lost to them earlier that year) but the whole CFB world was sick of that USC lovefest heading into the game. I did joyful laps around my living room after Young scored to win. I suppose it’s good evidence that tribal hatred is a major driving force for CFB fandom 🙂 You are right about Quinn - when he's on his game he’s the best QB in the CFP field. OSU needs to pressure him into mistakes or he’ll win the game for you. Playing against his old school has to be added motivation. My biggest worry is your DL against our OL. You come out blazing there and it will be a very tough game for us.
  15. I feel like the “expert” consensus is not reflected in the majority of the OSU fan base. No idea what the team is thinking but hopefully they’re locked in. The last time we were so heavily favored in a championship setting was against Florida in 2006, and whoops on that one. But there we had a month to soak in our win in the “Game of the Century” and get fat, lazy, and complacent. Meanwhile, in 2014 we were +/- 7 pt underdogs to both Bama and Oregon, pretty much the position you’re in now, and we know how that went.
  16. You do not want to follow Michigan’s offensive gameplan - they had one scoring drive for 3 points. The other two scoring “drives” came off our turnovers and totaled 2 yards. If you can replicate their defensive success, then yes, by all means
  17. I think if you come in trying to manufacture a run game first, you will lose. Gotta pass to start, prioritizing the intermediate levels enough to peel our LBs into coverage and away from the LOS, and get our safeties looking shallow.
  18. Yeah, for me at least. Covid was like this past Tuesday, and 2008 sometime around last Saturday.
  19. The craziest part is how this game seems like it just happened the other day.
  20. It’s Ewers. I love Howard but he’s 0-2 in that situation for us. And Ryan Day, whose postseason modes are a binary A) blowout win, or B) heartbreaking loss, is like 0-20
  21. To help us all bide our time before our little football game tomorrow evening, I’ll put this film analysis here for your viewing enjoyment. I think this guy has some of the better breakdowns out there. It’s not obvious from the title, but he gets into some specifics of how OSU and Texas might match up schematically.
  22. I think he’s probably 3rd behind Smith and Egbuka (who is highly underrated imo). Golden probably has a step up on Carnell Tate although I like Tate a lot and his ceiling is very high. At the moment I think Golden certainly starts over Inniss, who is solid but unspectacular - he reminds me of Austin Mack from a few years ago.
