Yeah, the shingles vaccine (Shingrix) is about 85-90% effective for the first 4 years after vaccination. However, you are still better off in adulthood having received the Varicella vaccine as a kid rather than actually getting the virus. If you get chickenpox, the virus remains latent in the dorsal root ganglia. Then as a person becomes more immunocompromised through age, the virus can be reactivated.

I’ve had two friends (both over 50) come down with shingles in the last few years.

So is the recommended timetable for shingrix once every 4 years?

I got the two part vaccine in late 2019 and I understood it was a forever vaccine. It was a pain in the ass—got a low grade fever after both shots and felt like i had a cold. But Shingles sucks and depending on where it pops up it can be devastating. I had it in 2018.
