OC(s) and Play Calling

This was eating up a recruiting thread.

My take: Herman will be involved in designing the offense and the offensive gameplay irrespective of whether he calls the plays on Saturday. The subtraction from his time necessitated by being the playcaller really applies primarily between kickoff and final gun. There is danger of too much disconnect with his defensive staff, players, and game plan, but it is something some coaches are able to manage. Three advantages of Herman’s continuing to call plays: (1) we have been improving on offense including looking like a million bucks in the opening drive against UGA, (2) if we have more than one “Co-OC,” there is less rivalry and discontent based on one being the real OC and the other not, and (3) there is less risk of discontinuity if/when OCs leave.
