Just generally clearing out a crowd that didn't have authorization to be there and was asked to leave...presumably for the previous 1.5 hours.  That's pretty standard practice.  They weren't swinging clubs or anything as far as I saw.

I hear the argument about 1A, but I don't feel like that was violated in this case.  Perhaps that's where we diverge.

Its really not a close call, the first amendment was absolutely violated.

In my view, it wasn't an unreasonable response.

You're an extremely weird dude. "I'm a lib and I don't like Israel, but I'm all for cops assaulting and arresting peaceful protests" is a pretty rare take.

This is a lot simpler than you are all making it. It has everything to do with personal integrity and nothing to do with anything else.

Hartzell cannot be trusted anymore with situations like this, he's the wrong person. He handled the DEI thing extremely poorly and now this. He isn't suited for the role. People who argue that the role is placating the BoR and whatnot, no it's not that's not the role, it's to protect and promote what's good for UT and it's faculty, staff and students as a premier education and research institution.

Also he literally called fucking riot police to a peaceful protest on his own campus. I was on campus, it was fucking insane and I didn't even get out to see it until around 5PM. Some of you have no idea and are very much armchairing this shit, I was on campus, it was an embarrassment how ridiculous the response. Some of you legitimately have not looked at the actual footage of what happened. It was literal fascism on the UT campus silencing a message that they didn't want.

Esto. I'm sympathetic to "the next person will be worse" theory, but it's not really true. One of the first rules of dealing with fascists is you don't try to appease them; you don't surrender to them preemptively because you think it will buy you time or room to stand firm on other issues. Fascists succeed much more easily when power is given to them freely, because they actually suck at seizing and wielding it. If Hartzell is replaced by some dipshit obvious fascist, they'll actually be less effective long-run than they would be with a more "moderate" president who is constantly attempting to appease them.

Aren't you the guy that posted a link an actual, literal Nazi website once because you thought they were making a good political point about some shit?

    Yes he is.

JFC, no surprise your critical thinking skills are non existent. The VAST MAJORITY of college protests are about support for Palestinian people and criticism of the State of Israel's military actions. The VAST MAJORITY of chants and signs at these events are "Free Palestine" or the like. A few who go off the rails does not = "the protests are antisemitic."

The stuff Brisket is pointing out are protests, events, people in which the VAST MAJORITY are promoting nazism. The signs and chants and signs are "The Jews Will Not Replace Us."

    Yeah, both anti-Semitic.

    Dumb fuck.

Some of whom Johnny said were good people.

So, where was the Palestinian disapproval of 10/7?

What was the consensus reaction from their citizens, outrage or celebration?

I don't know what degree of support vs opposition there was in the days immediately after, but I'm sure it was mixed and based on plenty of inaccurate information, because that's how things like that work everywhere. I'm sure plenty of Palestinians felt the murder of Israeli civilians was justified, just as many here have since felt that the murder of Palestinian civilians is justified.

You think cops making an arrest have the right to slam you to the ground and cuff you for asking them a question?

Being charitable to him, he thinks cops are basically untrained animals and a smart person should be smart enough to not get bit. Which I don't really disagree with. But he seems to think that's just how police inherently are and thus not something worth getting mad about. But we know it's not just how police inherently are, because we see how they treat people they like (white supremacists). And we see how more civilized police in other countries behave.

They're our employees and are supposed to serve us, but they only see us as their enemy, and normal people tend to rightfully get pissed off when they come to that realization.

The fucker you voted for did quite a lot of heavy lifting to normalize cops using force as a first step.

He knows. That's why he voted for him.

  8. The easy way to tell that none of this is about antisemitism is that we’ve seen thousands of antisemitic public rallies the past 8 years. The cops that show up are never violent with them and can often be seen joking around with Nazis and otherwise being friendly with them.

Meanwhile, this is how they treat a philosophy professor at Emory:

The only people cops aren’t this violent with are Nazis.

I don't understand what is offensive or scary about this. Are we concerned that occupying grass is going to disrupt something? The south lawn is occupied every day class is in session, UT football is playing, or some other event is occurring on campus. It is also occupied around commencement, and a million other times during the year. Here are some pictures of it being "occupied" and somehow riot police weren't needed. Oh the fucking horror!

  10. Again, y’all just need to search for posts with the word “speech” made by Johnny Sack, and see his complete about face on it here (not so cleverly disguised as simply adhering to first amendment precedent), to realize he’s completely full of shit and simply trolling y'all to get a rise out of you.

What is the debate? Their right as Jews to exist? The right of Israel to exist? Their association with Israel? Are we going back to BC, 1948, the most recent Hamas attack, Israel's response? The treatment of the average Palestinian in Gaza? Is there a moderator? Can the audience shout down the speakers?

I have got to tell you that debating a mob that is or isn't violent is a terrible idea. What you call debating at a demonstration is a simple yelling at each other and in those kind of debates, majority rules. Meanwhile many kids just want to go to school without incident and get prepared for finals. And just because one is Jewish, doesn't mean he supports Israel, it doesn't mean he must denounce Israel, and it could mean any thing in-between. Jews aren't some monolithic block. There are many differing views. So when Jerry Seinfeld or Michael Dell, or Scarlett Johansson get confronted by demonstrators because of their religion, it raises a lot of red flags for Jews in the US. And then when the demonstrations are being started on campus and begin to spread, it raises more red flags.

As for everything being peaceful, I can only go by hearsay because I'm a little old for campus. What I can gather is that it is peaceful if you are thick skinned. Intimidation, chants like from the river to the sea, the Holocaust didn't exist, Jews kill Palestinian babies, are present. And such things wouldn't affect all Jews equally. Some may call that peaceful as long as there isn't spitting and pushing. Some may be scared. Some would rather celebrate Pesach than deal with a bunch of protests.

And as you said people who engage in violence, threats, and intimidation, should be held accountable. This hasn't been happening, though. And things are getting out of hand in many places around the country and around the world. When mobs storm the airport terminal in Daghestani, shouting antisemitic slogans, chanting "Allahu Akbar" and running around asking staff where the "Jews" are, Jews around the world take notice. It has been seen before and it has rarely ended peacefully.

What the fuck does Daghestani have to do with American college campuses?
