It looks like you're new here, but you've got me down pretty straight. I am sort of a resident Pollyanna who constantly makes up positive shit about the team and in praise of the coaching staff.35 points

Okay, back home and can try to gather thoughts on my conversation over dinner: Zelenskyy was over his head when he first received Western intelligence on Russia's invasion plans. I can understand how improbable it seemed to him at the time, but the perspective is he had warning and overlooked the threat for almost a year leading up to the Feb 24 strike. Poroshenko knew military conflict was inevitible and tried to coach on Russia's buildup as Zelenskyy took office Yanukovich really set them back as a prospering nation attempting to disassociate from Russia The average Ukrainian trusts nothing communicated from Russian sources-- it's usually false there's always an agenda behind a message The average Ukrainian knows about the human atrocities taking place in the East, regardless of where they reside The average Ukrainian also gives no fucks about changing their way of life with conflict raging around them-- there's a sort of bravado about standing their ground, and there's a quote from an old woman on national news who once stated, "we lost our roof, our running water, our gas, our electricity, but we have freedom" The average Ukranian knows Russia is getting their shit pushed in on their territory and that they are running out of missles Russia will run out of money before running out of men, and that spells the real trouble within. Once the money dries up for military supply, for conscripts and for subsidies in the poorer oblasts, watch the discontept boil over So much of Russia's somewhat-modern military capability was borne of Ukrainian engineering and supply, including some of the Sarmat programs. My friend is involved with a Ukrainian Mil-Hacker group on Telegram. This is a pretty tight knit group of around 200 volunteers, most with advanced software and IT infrastructure backgrounds. Each day, the Telegram channel declares a 'challenge' on something related to the war, targeting Russia. Many are coordinated DDoS attacks on Russia telecom networks, some are hyperlocal and target their military comms. They're among the group responsible for halting Russian banks, breaking their postal and delivery services, and bringing down cellular networks Russian expats in Europe are grating. Most are still drinking the propaganda kool-aid and can be awful to deal with Germany does have a Russian problem- Ukrainians are disgusted with Scholz and understand enough Russians fled to Germany that they don't have a handle on everyone with a visa Poland is Ukraine's 'brother in arms,' and that anti-air coverage in Lviv is largely augmented by Polish missle systems He believes internal political parity exists to counter Putin but none united and loud enough to overcome their state propaganda. Ukrainians don't give any credit to Navalny, after his statements on Crimea (that Ukraine had little position over it any longer). In Ukraine, Sergei Furgal's efforts are more admirable for his membership in the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia and leading anti-establishment opposition in the far east. Unfortunately, his influence isn't going to be noticed in the west aside from means to send him to trial in Moscow and lock him up, in which he's serving 22 years for a sham trial on a double-murder accusation. Igor Girkin gets a free pass to talk shit about the MoD as he still carries FSB credibility China is already bending Russia over in Siberia-- since 2019, there's a Chinese shadow logging industry operating mills in the region and and transporting lumber down the Trans-Siberian, but few are seeing any economic benefit from their rapid deforestation21 points

They love our support and our way of life, but are taken aback by our internal political struggles and social issues which bubble up in the press. He says that Ukrainians share an American ethos in that the people of a nation can put their differences aside to fight for their independence. He starkly stated that's the difference between Ukraine/U.S. vs Russia- that Ukrainians (or Americans) would fight for their nation, where Russian's cause is to fight for their president. Pretty sure any American who visits Ukraine right now is treated as royalty, and he wants me to come over and visit as soon as I'm ready. He flashed me a smile with confidence that I'd be safer in Lviv than The Bronx right now and that he lives a normal way of life, enjoys stable electricity and uses Starlink Internet. I forgot to mention, he's a couple years younger than me (guessing around 42) and does have a military 'slip,' issued by the government, whereby it's possible he could be called up for duty. This hasn't happened though, as he doesn't have prior military service and his specialty is in IT, not in any fabrication or military hardware skill. He said he's had colleagues who were once IoT engineers and are now providing service to the military by modifying civilian drones, so now I know how one of the radio contacts was hijacked to serve as a grenade-drop mechanism. His travel to Dallas started by way of car to the Polish border checkpoint, where he has to declare what he's taking, what he's returning with, and when he's coming back. Says their border guards are really picky over that kind of stuff as they're hesitant to let any able-bodied man leave the country. He then flew from Warsaw to DFW via Atlanta. In order to return to Ukraine in good-standing with his military slip, he has to bring back an item or donation of high value to the country. He was last over here in December, when he returned with a Starlink terminal to donate. This time, he's bringing a $2700 Butterfly mobile ultrasound device to donate for the front lines.19 points

I live in a tourist area, and by the end of the summer I will admit that I'm looking forward to them leaving. But tourist dollars pay for everything in the Denali Borough. The only tax levied here is the bed tax. There are no property, sales, or income taxes so the bed tax pays for all Borough services. Plus the money the tourists spend supports a lot of the population year round even though the vast majority of the tourist season is in the summer. The Asians come in the winter to procreate under the Northern Lights. A child conceived under the Lights is supposed to be blessed. One of my favorite sights in the winter is the red bus parked on the side of the road. It's a modified bus with "sleeping compartments." In actuality the bus drives around the highway looking for the Lights. When they come out, it pulls over and the people on the bus go into their compartment to screw. I've often wondered how the bus driver passes the time in those situations. Always makes me chuckle when I see that bus pulled over.18 points

Queue Garry Kasparov, "What's the worst thing about being so intelligent? I understand things so clearly, and others don't." I look at my own life experiences, and try to project that against how the "average" American views things. Right or wrong, I would characterize the collective mindset as "it doesn't really concern me, so ..." I was an Air Force Brat and spent my early life on remote AFB's. Back then, most of what I knew I read someplace, not much broadcast news, and my real world life experiences were limited. Growing up in Austin in the late 60's was enlightening to say the least, the contrast behind a very structured life on an AFB v. the unbridled energy & passion challenging the establishment, especially with LBJ in the White House and Frank Erwin commanding UT (anti-war protests, tree huggers, and thank god, hippy chicks). I remember watching the news every day, seeing the Viet Nam casualty reports, and thinking "we're kicking their ass." Years later, when my older brother got his draft number, and his friends got drafted or went to Canada, after attending a vet/friends funeral, shit started getting real. I graduated HS in the 70's in Austin, and went to school with some kids that had never been outside of Texas, and a lot whose fathers went to Viet Nam. I stood along side Presidential Blvd at Bergstrom to watch LBJ's procession, seemed like every general in the US Military came to town. Nixon resigned on my 18th Birthday. That was a sliver in time where very few people had any desire to join the military and "Serve their Country." By the time I left UT, right after 3 Mile Island and the Iranian Revolution, I was more educated, questioned my past and confused about the future, or confused about my past and questioning my future, with a somewhat jaded view to not take anything at face value (American Interests?). Traveling, and learning, as an adult, crystalized many things for me. Are you from Texas? Kinda, 8th Generation, Land Grant family from the Crown of Spain. The Jefferson Memorial; "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." Having Au Pairs, travels to Europe, staying with our German Au Pair in a village 30 miles from Belgium; The rural Germans are the hardest working, most resourceful people I've ever been around, (if a cow takes a dump, there is a farmer standing behind it with a shovel), and unfortunately, devoid of any quality leadership for the past 100 years. Paris. If WWII Paris looked like Bakhmut or Mariupol, that would have been the greatest tragedy in the history of Mankind. Seeing their Statue of Liberty kinda put all that "... never fired, dropped once..." shit to bed. Bingo on the pay it forward! Translating all that to Ukraine, makes me want to take my 60+ year old ass and my 30.06 and go fuck up some Russians. Ok, lighten up Francis. Better to fire up the BUFF's! Thank you all, again and again. Your collective knowledge, insight, and experiences, and humor, make my day. Slava Ukraini16 points

I didn't have "welp, just let Republicans die" on the bingo card for today but here we are. People who can't find common ground and appreciation for people with differing political views are a huge problem in this country.16 points

Perhaps it does to some, but I don't think it should. This isn't a murky situation that is confusing, this rather straight forward. This is about right and wrong, good and evil. This is about people fighting for their freedom, which ought resonate with every American. This isn't some place where we are attempting to install a democracy where the people don't want it. The Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom and their right to exist. This is about a people being invading specifically because they want to join the free world. Is there risk to us and US citizens, yes, but its frankly marginal. The French stuck their neck out for us 250 years ago to support democracy but also to fuck the Brits. Here we get to pay it forward, and fuck the Russians.16 points

It absolutely would affect you and the USA as a whole if Russia was allowed to take Ukraine. If Russia took Ukraine, Russia would control around 20% of the world's wheat, and 30% of the world's corn production, as well as 60% sunflower oil production. Russia, a single nation of 140 million people, could fuck with the food supplies/prices of the other nearly 8 billion people in the world. Putting aside that he could force a rise in prices (which would affect us here as American producers might ship overseas if the price is right, which lowers our supply and raises our prices), he could create food instability in various regions. Say they create food instability in Central/South America...guess what happens? A whole shitload of people are going to head for Mexico and the US and swarm our border, causing all kinds of problems. Wall Street will not look kindly upon businesses working/selling in a Central/South America that is in disarray. Say he does it in Africa - again, it creates problems for American companies that have interests there, it would generate a rise in piracy in various areas, which means the US Navy will be deployed to those areas. But wait, there's more. We have a massive trade/investment relationship with Europe, and Putin/Russia have already said they want to get the band back together against its will, and that when they are finished with Ukraine, they would look elsewhere, including NATO countries. Now, you can say that he wouldn't be that foolish, but we know he's not all there, which means we will have to ramp up our military deployments to Europe, which will cost the American taxpayer more money, and it will extend our military more than it already is. And we won't be sending 40 year-old vehicles that we had sitting in long-term storage, that we will be passing off to others, we will be sending high-maintenance modern systems that are expensive to deploy, with a long logistics tail behind them. And yeah, there's the whole "support a nation that is trying to protect its freedom", but from a purely cynical/financial point of view, it's 100% in our best interest that Russia is defeated in Ukraine. Putin controlling 20-30% of the world's wheat and corn markets is fucking insane to comprehend.14 points

They legit used maps that were published prior to 1986 and had no idea of the containment area. I met my 'Ukrainian brother' tonight in Dallas, an old colleague I've kept up with on LinkedIn, who now is the CEO of a Ukraine based software development firm. He's in town to prospect clients, but as a condition of his exit, he must return with an article of significant aid to his country. I bought him a beef rib and beers from Terry Black's BBQ. We probably spent three hours catching up on life and the conflict he deals with on a daily basis. Fortunately, he and his family are safe in Lviv, but he did have to move from Kherson a year ago and his brother was left behind. I'm gonna forget all the talking points and perspectives and some may come back to me. I gotta check on some things at home before I post, and he's inspired me to make a visit soon. If I do, I'm best to smuggle in any high dollar medical equipment needed on the front lines.14 points

sometimes i forget it's the football board i am on and that logic doesn't apply to those people. if Jake Majors is such shit, why has he started i think 27 games in a row and not displaced? regarding the OL being shit: now was it amazing, nope. it wasn't Joe Moore Award winning (that was Michigan, who finished 25th in avg line yards btw.) it wasn't phenomenal but people keep acting like it was shit when it objectively wasn't. Texas finished last year 31st in Average Line Yards, 30th in standard downs line yards, 33rd in passing down line yards, 8th in opportunity rate, all per football outsiders. Line Yards per Carry: the line gets credit for rushing yardage between 0-3 yards (instead of 0-4) and 50% credit for yards 4-8 (instead of 5-10). Anything over 8 yards is quantified as a highlight opportunity, and credit goes to the runner. As with the pro definition, lost yardage still counts for 125%. (Garbage time is filtered out for all line yardage averages.) Standard Downs Line Yards per Carry: The raw, unadjusted per-carry line yardage for a team on standard downs (first down, second-and-7 or fewer, third-and-4 or fewer, fourth-and-4 or fewer). Opportunity Rate: The percentage of carries (when four yards are available) that gain at least four yards, i.e. the percentage of carries in which the line does its job, so to speak. passing wise they finished 25th in sack rate, 31st in standard down sack rate and 41st in passing downs sack rate. Sack Rate: Unadjusted sack rate for all non-garbage time pass attempts. Standard Downs Sack Rate: Unadjusted sack rate for standard downs pass attempts. Passing Downs Sack Rate: Unadjusted sack rate for passing downs pass attempts. sorry it doesn't fit your narrative. also this is one of the absolute worst takes ever posted on the internet. 100% of the time it is good for you to return your entire OL. period. here was the 2 deep for the bowl game: you really are going to question if a team with the 31st best Line Yards, who return a 3 year starter at RT (35 straight starts) and 2 year starter at C (27 straight starts) + a true sophomore LT who started every game last year, a true SO who started every game last year and another true freshman who started 13 games at RG is a good thing?! that's without considering a full year in the program for OLs like Neto, Agbo, Connor Robertson, DJ Campbell and Cam Williams. but sure, it's absolutely debatable for a team to return all 10 players from their offensive line 2 deep.11 points

I feel like Biden's team should be spending more effort in distinguishing between how much we have sent in cash payments and new purchases and clearly break out the dollar values for older retired equipment being sent. All of this sounds lovely. Truly. But -- and this really isn't CR'ing the thread -- I can imagine getting to know some of the town citizens better, and seeing their -- a'hem -- political affiliations shine through, and I'm not sure I could handle that. Maybe Coleman is different, and those folks let that shit fall by the wayside. But I'm not seeing that in my small town experience across Texas over the past decade. I can handle a different environment that's far from the urban culture of Austin, and there's a big appeal to that for me. But in a state that has become increasingly divisive politically, and that dividing line is for the most part urban/suburban v. rural, the chances of me living in a Texas "small town" have drastically decreased over the past 8 years or so.10 points

Fortunately, I believe Congress has enough intel where our support will remain bipartisan, even if consituents from one party feel disillusioned over it. Like most things, the White House and our Press could do a far better job underscoring our need to support our allies and stability in Europe.
