THANK YOU The Dems were fully on board with either Emmer or empowering McHenry for some additional duties. THE MAJORITY PARTY WHICH IS THE GOP DID NOT PUT EITHER UP FOR A VOTE So the Dems could not do anything. Nothing at all. Absolutely powerless. STOP FUCKING BLAMING THE DEMOCRATS23 points

Accountability: the Watchword of the GOP I'd like to cuff that smug smirk off his lying face. This is the game. Does this pasty gang of degenerates look like they're interested in playing politics? No. They're in the war against the republic. They actually laughed at a reference to the insurrection then shouted down the questioner. Maybe I'm off the deep end, but I think the political discussion on this thread about the implications of who gets elected speaker from this bubbling cess pool are sort of stuck in the past. There are no GOPs (maybe a few, I guess) at all interested in becoming more moderate. These are defenders of rebellion. The do so in the clip above. These are constant liars. These people have no policy agenda other than painting Dems as dangerous enemies of the country and collecting on the fear and hate they create. And they don't give a fuck about the interests or health of this country. The US would not miss a single one of these weasles who might emigrate away to another country or an incinerator somewhere. Not a single person in that picture is worth the skid mark on a homeless man's underwear. So dealing with them or hoping for something good from them is futility. The only answer is removing them from power. Peaceful means remain available.23 points

And this is very bad -- for the Republican Party. This will make it impossible for them to win national elections legitimately. Which is why their goal now (and for a while) is to do away with the whole "democracy" thing. They know they can't win legitimately any more, and have for a while. Their strategy to Gerrymander, throw shade at elections, and support Trump aren't dumb; this is deliberate strategy, because it is the only way the Republican party maintains power. I don't entirely agree with a lot of what Brisket says about the typical Republican voter; I think the vast majority of them are genuinely ignorant. Humans choose our beliefs to fit in with our peers and use our powers to reason to justify those beliefs; anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves. But I completely agree with him on the Republican Party itself. It is now, officially, as dangerous to America as the Nazis were in Germany. This isn't Godwin's Law any more; this is what's happening right now. I deliberately chose to study the fall of democracy at UT at one point, because I wanted to understand, "How does this happen?" And the threat is very, very real. I still believe that we will have an election, the Republicans will be defeated, and Trump will find himself inside a prison cell... but then, I also believed that Charlie Strong was a great head football coaching hire, so my beliefs are suspect.22 points

For the sake of my mental health, I should stop reading the news as the resumes of the prospective GOP speakers as their names are put forward for consideration. Scalise who proudly called himself "David Duke without the baggage." Jordan who covered up sexual abuse and shows relentless fealty to Trump and hostility to functioning government. Now Johnson who repeatedly propagated election lies, filed briefs to overturn a fair election, and wants me to live in his theocracy. It's all just so fucking gross. We see who they are in their presidential "debates" where none of them is willing to criticize Trump, except for the guy who enabled Trump from the inside for years and years, right up until the moment that he made his own power-grab calculation to be the "anti" vote (now polling at around 3%). I know I'm just observing what's been obvious for the past 8 years and counting, but it's disheartening to see it on display. I never thought I'd feel nostalgic for Romney or McCain - guys who I just disagreed with on most issues, but at least I didn't have to wake up every morning and see stories of them covering up sexual abuse, plotting to overthrowing democracy, trafficking teenage girls with Venmo payments, vaping and getting to second base in a theater where families are watching musicals, or having a completely forged identity. I still believe that none of this would be possible - and have vigorous party-wide support - without relentless right-wing propaganda that presents itself as news.21 points

The whitewashing of Jan 6 infuriates me more than anything else right now. I have friends (Trump supporters) that were pissed in that moment and even agreed he should be impeached. After all the gaslighting they’ve been subjected to they now think Jan 6 is way overblown by the Democrats.20 points

They need to put Nancy on TV today so she can talk about how nice Mike Johnson spoke about her and was willing to work with her and she welcomes productive conversations with Mike Johnson and Democrats.20 points

Quinn has a 78% completion rate against conference opponents, and that number stays above 70% for the whole season. He has 13 passing tds and only 3 interceptions on the season. What the hell about that is not impressive? I get it man, you have a hard-on for Maalik, but don't act like Quinn isn't having an impressive season.18 points

You want to know how this war ends? It's not how the Sergeant Major predicts in 1917: "last man standing." It's how World War I actually ended: with one side suffering a mutiny that renders it incapable of further combat. And actually, that's how World War I ended twice. On the Eastern Front, the Bolshevik Revolution and ancillary mutinies in the Russian Army (particularly in the four armies of the Northern Front) rendered any further Russian/Soviet resistance ineffective. And on the Western Front, the French had a large mutiny in 1917 that threatened to cause an Allied collapse before the mutinies in the German military in November 1918 ultimately ended the war. We're going to have to have that again. Both Russia and Ukraine have enough men and access to enough weaponry that neither one is going to be able to get to the "last man standing." One of their militaries is going to collapse into mutiny. I know whom I have my money on.17 points

I know these people. Not literally, but I can make an educated guess. They live in Marion. He works for his Dad’s insurance office in Cedar Rapids, but it isn’t going very well. He walked beans for his great uncle once in 1993 and likes to tell people he “basically grew up on the farm”. After 5 Busch Lights (which he incessantly refers to as “Lattes”), he likes to comment about how he doesn’t understand why everyone hates Nickleback, because they “fucking rip”. She’s a dental hygienist. Grew up in Oelwein. They met on the dance at floor at Sharky’s in Cedar Falls when she was going to UNI and he was living in an apartment in Waterloo, selling weed but telling everyone he went to Hawkeye CC. She was kinda going through a black dude phase but wasn’t sure how her folks would react, and hey, this guy’s dad had a little cash. So she settled. She’s yelled “No laws when you’re on the Claws!” at least 25 times today. She was in a pyramid scheme based around selling dildos about 10 years ago and still uses “business owner” to describe herself on social media. Their kids, Hayden and Kaizeleigh, are assholes.17 points

She’ll production in the US alone is producing 28,000 a month, with a plan to get 100,000 a month in 2 years. https://www.defensenews.com/land/2023/10/06/us-army-awards-15b-to-boost-global-production-of-artillery-rounds/ Meanwhile South Korea is filling in gaps by providing 500,000 rounds. https://www.reuters.com/world/south-korea-lend-500000-rounds-artillery-shells-us-report-2023-04-12/ This also doesn’t include the rounds Ukraine have started to produce, the joint Rehmentel venture, or even the rest of Europe. https://news.yahoo.com/ukraine-shell-production-significantly-higher-152500962.html https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/23/world/europe/eu-ukraine-war-ammunition.html All in all, Ukraine will be fine to outlast Russia when everything truly gets ramped up.15 points

Let me get this straight: Emmer beat this guy fair and square in the conference vote Far right immediately says no way to Emmer Everyone who voted for Emmer over Johnson ("moderates" lol): "ok, that's fine" Wow, what backbone. What principles. I'm in awe of their steely resolve.15 points

This fucking rules, I had never seen this before. This is footage of ESPN the night of the title game, starting with the periodic updates they were cutting into on other programming. Begins with basically "USC is 6 minutes away from becoming the first team to win 3 national championships in a row." The stunned voices in the final update are worth watching:13 points

Since we don’t have a flight thread of badasses I thought I’d put this here. RIP to that beautiful courageous lady. Full text of the Tweet: Neerja Bhanot was a 22-year-old flight attendant working on Pan Am Flight 73 when it was hijacked by terrorists during a layover in 1986. Soon after taking control, the terrorists killed an Indian-American traveler and discarded his body outside the plane. They ordered Bhanot to gather the passengers' passports to single out Americans. However, she concealed the identities of the 43 Americans on the flight by stashing their passports under seats and discarding others. After a tense 17-hour standoff, the hijackers began shooting and setting off explosives. Bhanot bravely opened the plane's doors, and rather than escaping herself, she helped passengers evacuate. Tragically, she lost her life while shielding three American children from gunfire. One of the kids she safeguarded grew up to become an airline captain, crediting Bhanot as his inspiration.13 points
