  1. It's the first paragraph here verbatim: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/taxpayers-living-abroad And you are right, you can get the exemption but only if you meet the criteria. If you spent one day in the United States you may not qualify for the bona fide residence status. Or if your company sends you overseas to do consulting for part of the year you will still be taxed on that income. So some people will be exempted while some will not be. As far as Apple goes, it was an example of how companies are using tax shelters. From Forbes: I also read that they are now repatriating money because the tax rate was lowered to 15.5% which is good.
  2. Really? Why does the IRS say this:
  3. It was meant to be rhetorical. I would be glad to get a UBI.
  4. The ones that allowed companies like Apple to hold 90% of their profits overseas, shifting profits to subsidiaries. I don't know how much it would generate but we should make sure everyone is paying their share, especially businesses who have been avoiding taxes for years.
  5. Why don't we start small like getting rid of loopholes and tax shelters?
  6. Sounds good. How much am I getting?
  7. The excuse I've always heard about the CEO pay is that they need to pay them that much and give them their golden parachute so that they can attract the best talent. I call bullshit.
  8. On the other hand, there is a huge demand for it. It's called job security.
  9. My dad used to teach at a school on the south side of San Antonio and they had a cosmetology school. It was great for those who wanted to have a career in cosmetology. They could have hundreds of hours under their belt by the time they graduated.
  10. They should start learning trades in high school like they used to. It exposes them to other options besides college or retail.
  11. Those guys get paid by the sheet. I think they get $30 per sheet. That's not bad.
  12. I would push my kids to learn a trade if they had no desire to go to college. The problem is most parents tell their kids that they just need a degree and they'll be able to land a great job. What they should be teaching them is to study a subject in an in demand field. I would have liked to study history becuase it's very interesting, but I knew that I would have better job opportunities with higher pay if I studied electrical engineering. If I had no desire to go to college, I would have became an electrician. There's plenty of work for electricians.
  13. And if a student is poor and has little or no EFC, they can get financial aid. This year it's $5920 which is more than enough for community college and books.
  14. You questioned why I said "no" to everyone being elected in the next 12 years will be a Democrat. Then, I told you that there are Republicans running unopposed, so for every seat to be filled by a Democrat would be almost impossible. I don't have to have "standing" or be a "pundit" to know that. I hope this was informative. I'm simply answering your questions.
  15. There are several seats that have a Republican running unopposed so it won't be this year. As a matter of fact, the last 4 elections have had some unopposed Republican candidates. So rather than make some idealistic prediction of what may happen, make a pragmatic one. They could easily say, "we are in the top 1% of earners and we do not want to pay more, and neither does a percentage of our voter base". They could easily say, "this youth movement is too far left and we are not going to bring any of their bills up for a vote or vote against it".
  16. No what you are doing is what you always do. You come up with a scenario and then when I question how it will be implemented or achieved, you sit and cry about how you cannot believe that I think it's impossible when in reality I think it is possible but far less likely to happen. Then you say, "all I'm saying is that it is possible". No shit, tons of things are possible. Everyone elected in the next 12 years of congress could be a democrat. Is it possible, yes. Will it happen, no. See how that works?
  17. The point is you said "all we really need to do is raise rates at the top", and I'm pointing out that it's not feasible right now. So since we cannot do that, what is the alternative? I think it's far more likely that they increase taxes on the entire 55% that currently pays income tax instead of just the 1%.
  18. "Hey rich congressmen, let's pass this bill that says everyone who makes as much as US or more should pay more in taxes!" Rich congressmen: "Where do I sign!"
  19. Or at least some video of Jason Voorhees killing some camp counselors.
  20. The people who will propose and vote on this tax plan are going to agree to this? I highly doubt it.
  21. What is "wealthy enough"? Around 18.5% of my income goes towards taxes already and I sure as he'll don't have a lot of discretionary income.
  22. I'm talking about the posters on here who say, "why do you care? It's not like you are super rich." This is true, but I cannot support taxing rich people more and then complain when they decide to tax me more down the road. After reading a lot of discussion on here, I'm more in favor of a UBI for everyone and getting rid of all welfare except for those who are disabled, not mentally fit, and the elderly.
  23. If there was a way to achieve this without raising the taxes on the middle class, more people would support it imo. A lot of people say only the extremely rich would be taxed, but that will not be enough to cover the amount of money needed. Then the next richest people would be taxed more. Eventually it's going to be the entire 55% that pays income tax.
