    Senior Bowl Performance

As expected, Sam Ehlinger didn’t move the needle a ton at the Senior Bowl, in regards to his NFL Draft stock. He was able to affiliate himself with NFL scouts and display his leadership ability. However, on the field, he was visibly limited, just as his tape echoed. His functional mobility earned him some nice plays, but as a passer, he failed to distinguish himself. That was evident even in the game, where Ehlinger completed just 40% of his passes

Sam Ehlinger’s limitations as a thrower

Additionally, as a thrower, Ehlinger leaves a lot to be desired. He gets by to an extent with some good mental traits.

There are times when he uses his eyes to manipulate safeties. He clearly has a decent understanding of all the different moving parts of a given play. Yet, Ehlinger doesn’t always act on that understanding consistently. He can be slow to pull the trigger when going through his progressions, and a lot of times, when he waits too long, he lowers his eyes and looks to run rather than extending the play.

Ehlinger’s arm doesn’t do him any favors, either. Ehlinger can generate decent velocity when his base is set, but overall, he has a below-average arm. His release is relatively slow and concentric, and he doesn’t display the ability or elasticity necessary to throw at different arm angles.

Ehlinger’s lack of arm strength can be somewhat mitigated in the short ranges, but it shows up much more often in the intermediate and deep ranges. There, he lacks the velocity to get the ball downfield quickly. His accuracy also lacks down-to-down consistency. Although he improved this somewhat over the course of his collegiate career, it’s still a major concern, especially in an NFL where things move faster and where windows are tighter.

The Verdict on Sam Ehlinger's draft stock:

However, that’s only half of the NFL equation. The other half consists of physical qualities, and there, Ehlinger comes up short. He lacks an NFL arm, both in terms of strength and elasticity. And he’s not as athletic as a dual-threat quarterback should be. Ehlinger’s experience and mentality should lend him an NFL career, but he’s almost certainly a Day 3 pick.

Similar to fellow Texas legend Colt McCoy, Ehlinger best profiles as a long-term backup. His competitive edge also gives him a chance in spot-starting situations.

Sam Ehlinger’s best fits in the 2021 NFL Draft

Anywhere from Round 5 to Round 7 is fair game for Ehlinger. I personally wouldn’t pick him until later on Day 3 — and there’s no guarantee he’s picked at all — but he has traits some NFL teams may gravitate to when looking for a quality backup. The potential fits for Ehlinger are fairly wide-reaching. Any team with a need for a backup, or an aging backup and a need for a QB3, could benefit from adding Ehlinger to the roster.

The critique of his skillset is probably pretty accurate, but tying that to his 40% completion percentage in the senior bowl is a stretch.  There were several well-placed balls thrown by Sam that were just dropped by his receivers.  I don't recall the exact number, but it had to be 3-4.

I’ve been on a search for inexpensive very high quality wines. Don’t get me wrong I love the more expensive stuff but I also don’t feel like opening those bottles on nights when I just want a couple glasses of wine.  I like to save the really good stuff for special occasions.  What are your personal favorites for under $30 or so a bottle?   I’ll start with Vietti.  $25 a bottle and a fresh Barbera D’Asti that’s ready to drink now.  I’m a huge Italian wine fan so my contributions will lean that way.  This is a great bottle for the price.

I like Syrah, so I usually go with K Vintners and pretty much anything from Crozes-Hermitage.  K does have some >$50 bottlings, but their $30 bottles (Milbrandt, The Deal, Motor City Kitty) are all very good daily drinkers.  Usually in stock at Total Wine.

  3. Absolutely no reason to pay for A5 for a brisket. Just buy 20 oz or so of strip and cut them up into 2x4 slices and sear them. Keep the grease in the pan and cook some eggs in the morning.

Also, true A5 is from Japan and comes with a copy of the birth certificate from the cow, including a “fingerprint” of its nose.

So the cops eventually show up. Everyone hiding and ducking into people's apartments. Blake is running around bc no one can find Canasta. Where is the white cat? This beautiful white cat? Where is that cat? so a few people go back into the room where Caesar is. Realize Caesar is not supposed to be out of her enclosure.

Sorry but you’re a shit storyteller

We took our shot at both Wiggins and Simmons and came up empty. I am ok with giving Coleman another shot if that report about Herman micromanaging WR offers is to be believed. If he sucks this year, put me on the Rashad Samples bandwagon.

You might be right about taking a shot at the best of the best. I’m not sure what’s actually going on behind the scenes, as is it probably everyone. It just sucks for me to think this is the best Sark can do given all we’re throwing into this rehire.

SIAP - Roach article on Coleman sticking around:

      Hide contents

    — As Horns247 reported over the weekend and again this morning in The Stampede, we were hearing more buzz that Andre Coleman would be retained on the Texas staff. That seems all but official following Brian Davis’s report in the Austin American-Statesman today. News started to leak out over the weekend and multiple prospects I spoke with at Pylon 7v7 mentioned they were told Coleman would remain as the wide receivers coach.

    — While Casey Cain, Keithron Lee and Jaden Alexis are three interesting prospects with the tools to develop long-term contributors, the Longhorns simply must do better in 2022. That task might be easier under Steve Sarkisian. As I reported last week, Tom Herman took total control over wide receiver recruiting during his time in Austin and was overbearing on who Texas pursued. We heard this was the case with Drew Mehringer and Corby Meekins and it also seems it was the case with Coleman. A source I spoke with said that Coleman had a difficult time getting receivers approved for offers and the delay from Texas caused the Longhorns to lose out on some targets. It was so bad that I was told Coleman felt defeated before even bringing a guy to the table late in the year. I was told by someone who spoke with Coleman that there is a renewed sense of energy there as he regroups and tries to get Texas on track for 2022.

    — Before the buzz picked up on Coleman I spent time talking to receivers about their relationship with him. From what I got, things were generally positive and kids like him. Four-star receivers Tyler Morris, CJ Williams, Kevin Coleman and Armani Winfield all told me they liked Coleman and wouldn’t mind if he stayed around. Outside of COVID-19 and with less of the reported meddling, we expect better results.

    — I’ve also heard that Coleman was well-liked by the receivers on staff which will provide important continuity on offense. I also think recruiting might be easier due to the scheme. While Herman preferred recruiting giants and limited the passing game to an extent, we expect those to look more favorably on Sarkisian’s offense. If there is success it will likely recruit itself a bit.

    — We will see if there is a philosophical change in evaluations over the next month or two. I expect to see Texas get aggressive with targets and I’ll be looking deeper into the common traits between those prospects to get an idea of what they might be looking for. The handcuffs will be off for Coleman, so he should have no excuses moving forward.

Fuck all this. Dude failed this year. Break ties and let’s go get a big fish.

Coming in HOT right when everyone is drooling over the playcalling.

It’s just pissing me off watching a well oiled machine work like we all know ours could. Sorry for bitching on the coaching search thread in the middle of your game thread shit 😉

  8. This shit about Coleman is bullshit. The whole recruiting bs that “he was set back by covid” is empty. So was every other coach in the country. And we have zero stud WR recruits in TX this year. And we have Kai Money playing on fourth down over Whittington and Smith, or Tarik Black, and Josh Moore is nowhere to be found. I’m a hard pass on this.

  9. Just a guess but I’m thinking the Maiden was the star of the show? Although the 89 Jaboulet might also be there. Seriously good lineup. And the Veuve looks amazing with the darkness and still full of effervescence. Also surprised at how youthful the 86 Ridge looks. Thanks for the pictures.
