Very, very nice lineup there. Was the SQN Syrah or Grenache? And how was the 95 Margaux against it (assuming you paired the wines like shown in the pics)? Hard to read the Aubert label... which one was it?  And last, which was the wine of the night?

Damn, how was this? Have you had it before?

First time and it was amazing. More like syrup than wine and truly unbelievable. But.... probably not worth the money if I’m being honest.

Going to a place this Friday night and likely going to order a Reisling.  Any thoughts on:

2013 Von Winning, Pechstein, GG. Pfalz

    or

2013 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheim Goldloch, Auslese Nahe

    or

1999 or 2000 Trimbach Clos St Hune?

I just had the 1999 Clos St Hune and it was drinking beautifully.  Still crisp and acidic even at 20 years old.  I haven't had the other two, but for the von Winning, GG is basically the Riesling equivalent of Grand Cru in Burgundy, so you probably can't go wrong there.  The Schlossgut Auslese is a late harvest, hand picked wine that will be higher in residual sugar and have low alcohol, but will probably be fantastic, especially if it's their gold cap bottling.

I think you have no other choice but to get all three and do side-by-sides.

    How was the Ste Hune?

I found it surprisingly fresh and crisp for its age. I expected it to be dominated by minerality and petroleum, but it was still very acidic and had a lot of citrus notes as well. Definitely would recommend it.

Definitely some superstars in that lineup. How did the 75s hold up against the Margaux?

Been using Shun for several years.  Love them. Bought a set (use every one) and added to it.  Best part is they have a giant brisket/roast knife I bought that is like a small machete.  Perfect for brisket

Definitely Shun. A few years ago I bought the complete set of the Ken Onion special knives before they were discontinued. Absolutely the best kitchen knives ever made.

I just checked the weather for my time in the Basque Country (after the London Wine Fair).

I might be leaving before the morning of the 30th and just eat the cost of one night and find a place in the Rioja region on the way to Barcelona, because Rioja's forecast looks much more friendly.

Just came back from San Sebastian and would highly recommend the restaurants Rekando, Arzak, and Elkano (in Gatteria).  Excellent food, and amazing wine lists with bargain pricing.  Ask to go on a wine cellar tour at Rekando.

@Seger78 @b_p thanks for the thorough recs - I'm pumped at about this trip, will fit those suggestions into the itinerary.

I've heard the city is small and easy to get around...walkable for the most part...anyone give me a frame of reference how big the areas are?

I wish I had more than 3 days there :(

Taxi's are readily available and cheap.  Walking is OK if you're in the middle of downtown, but going from Orchard Road to Marina Bay Sands will be a long, hot, sweaty walk vs. a 10 min air-conditioned cab ride.  With that said, walking in the evening is quite pleasant.  Most of the pointers I gave you will require a taxi.  For scale, it's about a 30 minute cab ride to the city center from the airport, and another 30 minutes from the city center out to Jurong on the west side of the island.  Also, it's about the same time from the city center to the zoo.  All those times are non-rush hour with no traffic; it can double at peak times, though Singapore traffic is much, much better than most large SE Asian cities.

You'll enjoy the trip.  I love Singapore and go back to visit frequently.

  9. Chili crab (or black pepper crab) at Jumbos at the East Coast Seafood location.  Be sure to get drunken shrimp and sticky buns.

The zoo, as mentioned, is very cool, as is the Jurong Bird Park

Ce La Vi rooftop bar at Marina Bay Sands (take your wallet; about $50 for two martinis)

1-Altitude is another cool rooftop bar

The Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling

Universal Studios in Sentosa - ride the cable car to get there

Dim Sum at Prima Tower on Sunday

Clarke Quay - Try Brewworks; it's some American guys that started making their own beers... pretty good stuff, and wings/burgers too

Boat Quay - Lots of little bars and restaurants.  Find a spot, have a seat outside, and drink lots of jugs of Tiger beer

Orchard Road if you want to people watch and shop.  I'd also recommend staying at the Marriott on Orchard road - there's a cool outdoor dining area with a little bar and you can sit and people watch while eating and drinking.  Also, Orchard Towers is just a short walk away.  If you don't know about Orchard Towers, you should probably do some research before you go.

Find any food court in any shopping center and have a bowl of Laksa.
