Ah, that it explains it. When I lived nearby in the UWS 8 years ago I was probably still ordering the house wine!

Edit to add: If you can squeeze in another meal, consider Ko. A friend of mine is the Sommelier there, and she just won New York Sommelier of the year by Michelin. Her tasting menu is always super interesting and delicious. And the great food doesn’t hurt.

Great suggestion! I did Ko a few years ago and it was great. Had the tasting menu with their drink pairing and also brought a couple of corkage bottles. Fantastic and I will definitely do it again. It was on the list this time but there a few other places that I haven’t tried ahead of it, and I was fortunate enough to secure reservations. A post for another day, but man, what a challenge to get reservations these days. Everyone is selling out as soon as seats become available.  Getting back on track, I’d definitely go back to Ko and would love to ham it up with your Som friend.

Damn, well done. Nice Matin is just ok IMO, but every other place you listed is A+. Compagnie is in my regular rotation.

Nice is just to consume some treasures from their fantastic wine list. One of the best in town, imo.

    RIP @b_p

Many times we would take the foil pouch out of the Franzia box and tuck it in the inside pocket of my ski jacket for all day drinking on the slope. Good times. RIP indeed.

Nice glass selection.  Our flutes have been gathering dust for about 15 years....

Can’t go wrong with Reidel Sommeliers, though I think they’ve been discontinued for some reason. They’re really hard to find now.

  5. Gaja was just ok, Poyferre wasn’t good (it wasn’t corked, but it was cloudy and just didn’t sing like it should), Lynch Bages was the star of the show with Ducru right behind.
The SQN wines were fantastic, and the 2012 Rhône-style white side-by-side was great as well. I love Schrader wines and the 2013 CCS is pretty close to perfect.

Man, that's pretty special.  I hope your guests appreciated those.

Noticed the corks look a little worse for wear; wines holding up ok?

Every time an aggy friend tells me about their spirit and atmosphere and how it’s the best in the country, I always follow up with this:

”so why hasn’t any of that resulted in a National Championship in over 80 years?”

Never can I get an answer to that.

Even better is to ask about that awesome, once in a lifetime atmosphere in 2011, when arguably one of the worst teams we ever fielded, with Cameraman McCoy at the helm, overcame the 12th man’s fury, diced up the middle of the field defenders, and our opera singing kicker nailed a 38 yarder in the face of the amazing aggy atmosphere to walk off with one of the best wins in the history of the rivalry.  Yeah ask about that atmosphere too.
