We just watched the Afghan government that we equipped melt like butter on hot toast, and took a lot of heat for the equipment that we gave them falling into Taliban hands.  I'm sure that, given the results of the last two Russian invasions of Ukraine, the administration wanted to be sure that the Ukrainians would fight and fight well.  Once they proved themselves, we opened the tap.

this.  plus no one wanted to FAFO and play ATF with the Nuclear David Koresh of global politics and fulfill his paranoid fantasies about enemies at the gates.  even now, we still have to take all that bluster somewhat seriously.

Really goes off on Intelligence services in the West at the end.

I can't disagree, though I realize it's a ton easier to see now.  If the strategy and execution on the part of the Russians had been significantly better but all the same shit equipment/maintenance had been in play, would we have noticed all this?

my guess is we've understood these things for a long time.  it's why we developed the automation we have for our comparable systems:  to have a battlefield advantage, or at least make up for the numerical disparity (at the time, in the 80s) with tech that lets us send more shit down-range, faster.

but how do you justify that expense to Congress by saying "russian gear sucks, we would mop their asses up just on training alone"?

  3. well, I enjoyed it.  but I was there, so for me it's about being able to relive the experience, and it works great for that.

here's my last video on this.  covers the interesting stuff (for me) across all three days.

    the tension alone is delicious:

-what is he going to do with the peanuts?  eat them as a side, or put them on top of the naoch?  dip them in the sour cream?

-wtf is White Rascal?  does CS have big boobs?

    so many questions.  bravo.

  5. haha, damn.  all those fun jumps of mine look super-lame from a following POV.

but, yes, the 18 Road area is almost all flow.  y'all'd love it.  most of the jumps are on Mojo, which really just the lower half of Joe's Ridge, after crossing a jeep road.

what's really interesting is this gives a great side-by-side comparison of different gens of cameras.  mine's a 6, and Mom's is an 8.  the wind dampening is 100% better on the 8.  you can hear the tires so much better on Mom's footage.

I have a few other videos I've lazily edited (continuity is #1!).  the Horsethief one following Mom is pretty good, but long.  been thinking how to put together a summary vid of the 3 days without it putting everyone to sleep.

I really liked this trail:  Frontside.  it gets you to the starts of Joe's and Zippity Do-Da.  because of the intermittent rain/sleet, I switched from my Dakine Hot Laps to my Blowfish so I could carry a jacket.  I think the chest strap was rubbing on the gopro harness, so there's some annoying noises, now and then.

What's the altitude like?  We don't usually hear you huffing and puffing, but that may be all the chunk you usually ride.

little over 5k.  still coughing from all the dust during the windstorm on day 1.

but mostly, it's my negative VO2 Max score, crappy nutrition, and my 10sp cassette.  Mom was killin' it on the longer climbs.

Braff, I hope you can get some saddle time, soon.

  7. just got back from Fruita, last night.  17.5 hour drive.  rode with Your Mom, a couple days.  after sifting thru 64GB of footage, I've concluded there's just no point in the gopro.  makes it hard to breathe, and the finished product doesn't even come close to capturing the fun.  we did a day at 18 Road (between scattered rain/sleet showers), then Kokopelli:  Mary's, Horsethief, then Moore Fun to get back to the truck.

I got there a day ahead of him, so I got a day to preride by myself.  wind was insane.  made it unrideable, after a point, esp on the exposed ridges.  checked NOAA later, and it was 25-35 with gusts to 65.  hardest wind I've ever been in.  almost got blown off the hill a few times.  ai may piece some of that together, but there's no way you can feel the sand getting driven into your legs at 50mph.

anyway, this one is decent.  Joe's Ridge/Mojo, end to end.

Mom's still out there, somewhere in Moab.  just shreddin'.

Hard to say, since Ukrainians are usually able to recover the bodies of their dead soldiers (minus the current occupied areas), and they get a proper burial and/or aren't left just lying around like the Russians do.  Ukraine has lost far less in terms of soldiers, simply because they are on defense and the attackers will almost always take heavier casualties against a well-prepared defense, plus Russia has expended a lot of heavier munitions against civilian areas (which is dumb as fuck since it doesn't help their military).

With that said, if Ukrainians were losing the kinds of numbers that the Russians are (even proportionally), I also think we'd see it/hear about it - Ukraine is not arresting people for talking about deaths, smartphones are everywhere, Ukrainians are not banned from social media in the West, etc.

I think the Russians will have many more officers dead just based on how their military works, versus Ukraine (who is more aligned with the West) - it feels like Ukrainian units have a lot more independence/self-reliance based on what we've seen, which speaks to NCOs and junior officers being trained/able to think on their own.

Russians on the other hand - their junior officers also have to do the kinds of stuff that Western NCOs do, and their higher-ranking officers are doing the kinds of things that our company/platoon officers in the West do, which means they are a lot more exposed at the front.   This also leads to their generals dying.

what difference does this really make?  Russian doctrine has always just been about numbers, of which they have a virtually limitless inventory of poor worthless idiots to send in waves at their oponent.  the 'leadership'  just has fancier uniforms and above average literacy (by russian standards).

the only time they ever looked  decent was when defending their homeland.  and really, the only people that suck at that are the french.

  10. just got done with 2.5 days of fishing around Salida.  shutout the first day.  saw one fish caught, and a local I talked to did the same as me.  so I headed up to a remote creek I where I knew I would score.  100% dryfly, on the Tenkara.  it's a rugged hike, about a 4mi round trip in wading boots (neoprene socks, no waders).  pocket fishing small water for small fish (<9"), but they're aggresive and fun.

this one hit an already shreaded parachute adams

hadn't planned to fish today, but after a cup of coffee downtown, I couldn't resist what I was seeing right there, under the stone bridge.  in a half-hour's fishing, I dropped a 14" at my feet, got several  little pissants as long as my hand, and netted this guy.

no trophies, but a good trip, so far.

just got to Fruita.  tomorrow, we ride.

Kind of a final report on the Ripley.  For some reason I can't put my finger on, it just feels better spinning up hills than the Marin.

I'm not sure if it's the "efficiency" of the DW-link (I didn't notice any sort of bob on the Marin), or maybe the better engagement hubs.  Or maybe the 12sp Deore cassette has a gear that the old one didn't.

    Narrarator:  it's the 12sp

In active combat, or having surrendered?

Because combat.....is combat.  That's horrific and gruesome, but it's also how war is fought.  Russia is gonna shoot back.  If they had surrendered, then of course, add it to the stack of war crimes in the corner.  You know the one.....it's the one full of shit Putin is gonna get away with.

no.  looked like they were prisoners.  just standing around in a group.

    BCGB today.

I wanted to make a quick edit to see how much faster the new laptop is vs my old windows box.  yeah it was quite the improvement...it rendered the video in 2 minutes, what would have taken 20+ on the old one.

nicely done.  this video's a reminder we need some cloudy days (for video purposes) and rain (for dirt purposes).  it's always fun to recognize the back trails from others' perspectives.

that title screen is one of my favorite areas.   nice place to take a break and take in the view.  this was from some years ago, during a break in singlespeed ride.  should play in 720p.

  14. Nice work, Mom!

funny, I've filmed myself doing both drops, but they've never been on the same final cut of video.

I don't like the second one, much.  it's a dirt landing, so it's smoother in that regard; but like you, I case it every time.  there is/was an alternate line to the left of the big cedar (see pic) that sort of gives you a chance at a couple extra pedal strokes of speed.  but I think it's having good fundamental jumping technique that will send you far enough to make the transition.  the ladder actually tilts up like a shallow ramp.  if you can load the bike through that, you'll make it (as long as you don't buck yourself over the top).  I seen it!

put on a fresh pair of Minion DDs, yesterday.  can't wait to hit the trail on them.
