There are only TWO active players from the 2004 MLB draft class that are CURRENTLY on an MLB Roster.

Justin Verlander (Rd 1, Pick 2)

Martín Maldonado (Rd 27, Pick 803)

They throw to each other for the Astros tonight.

I wish that number was 1 instead of 2.

  2. I’d still try to extend Bregman, assuming he’d sign a reasonable deal. He’s almost certainly never going to have another season like ‘18 or ‘19. You also won’t have to pay him like that.

He’s probably mostly like what he’s done this season, which may feel disappointing, but he’s going to finish up at around 3.5 WAR and he’s probably a 3-4 win player for each of  the next several seasons, 10-20% better than league average offensively. Who would you rather have at 3B? There probably isn’t a solution in the farm system by 2025, so you’re looking at signing a FA anyway, or acquiring someone via a trade, which generally means losing controllable assets; more often than not I’d rather they just spend money.

It’s cool that the pitchers love throwing to Maldy and all, but throwing to him results in worse performance and more losses. So…I don’t know, maybe prioritize winning over pitchers’ superstitions or incorrect perceptions or whatever? Call me crazy.

Dusty Baker says Michael Brantley isn’t on this trip, but noted Brantley’s dad is currently with Michael in Houston.

“That’s a pretty good sign when dad comes to town, especially when your dad is former pro Mickey Brantley. Means you’re probably close.”

Judge has the day off, so we should rest Alvarez and Tucker to be fair.

I wanted to give you a laughing emoji but that actually wouldn’t surprise me, and I don’t find that funny.

Who fucking cares?  He catches better pitchers and his cERA is half a run higher. They are wrong. It means nothing.

100% this. If he isn’t better than the other guy in any sort of measurable way when he plays - any at all - then it’s all make-believe.

I have no doubt that they like him. Hell I wouldn’t argue that he hasn’t helped them become better players. None of that has anything to do with playing him over Diaz in 2023 when every conceivable metric demonstrates that Diaz is the superior player in ways that can be directly linked to actually winning baseball games.

Make him the backup, keep him around. If all his value is unobservable anyway, then let him hang out in the dugout 4 out of every 5 games.

All kidding aside, esplain to me how trading to great prospects to NYM for Verlander and cash is better than signing him in the last offseason to the big cash deal he wanted?  Is that wad of cash from the Mets equivalent to the projected salaries of replacement prospects and/or free agents?  Or Tuck?   Is it a better deal than we would have had in the offseason?

Well, circumstances changed. Garcia and Urquidy are out. LMJ never came back. This attrition was an unknown variable during the winter.

So it isn’t better. But that doesn’t mean either decision (to pass on signing JV and trading for JV) was wrong.

So if we do get JV, what package would you be comfortable with? I assume it would take at least one of Gilbert or Clifford. We may need to add Arreghetti and/or Leon too.

I guess it depends on how much $$ the Mets would eat on JV’s contract. If they’ll pay down some of it, I’d expect them to ask for Gilbert and/or Clifford.

Korey Lee is better because he was in the Astros Top #5 pre-season prospects.

Again, not preseason. FG updated ratings has him as a 50 FV. That was the only point that was being made.

And yeah, I’d rather have Clifford than Lee.

When that list of best teams that didn't win was going around, the idiocy that 2019 wasn't 1/2&3 was crazy.  By far the best team to not win.  Like I said earlier, it could be the best team assembled ever, much less team that didn't win.

Yeah, that is almost certainly the best roster we’ll ever have.

It goes to show that short postseason series are essentially coin flips because it’s baseball and sometimes Howie Kendricks hits a home run on a pitch located in a spot where he never hits home runs.

Which illustrates the importance of playing as few series as possible to maximize your odds of advancing. Which in turn illustrates why you should maximize your odds of winning every game, at least within reason.

all that matter is the post season. Do you remember the lineup from July 31, 2022 or July 31, 2021, or July 31, 2020 …. ?

We’re two game back from the first round bye.

Every regular season game matters because there is an enormous difference between having to win 3 playoff series versus 2. The bye matters a lot, and thus the regular season matters. If we are edged out by the Rangers by a game or two and have to play an extra series - well, you can reasonably conclude that Dusty’s insistence on playing Maldy so much more than Diaz (and all the games he sat Chas for no reason) was the difference. And that’s not hindsight, as most on this thread have been screaming this all season long.

Neither luck nor randomness played a role in deciding the 2008 outcome. Texas was left out of that game due to a whole lot of coaches liking Stoops and also enjoying sticking it to Mack Brown. Fuck them forever, especially Art Briles.

Yeah, the “luck” part was the failure to secure the interception that would have ended the game. 100% agree that Texas was fucked by other coaches intentionally.

I don't blame Dusty for being Dusty.

Yup. Dusty has been actively costing the club games all season and everyone seems OK with it.

Also, it’s difficult to believe that Dusty is this fucking clueless about Maldy and Diaz. I’m sure he disregards plenty of meaningful metrics, but literally any metric or just simple observation obviously demonstrates the chasm between the two. He can’t possibly be this dumb.
