I think the last few years have disabused them of that.
I feel like Stanford fans, at least, are in the camp of pure survival (those that will do anything to preserve non-football/Olympic sports and still have a football team and or figure out a way to retain all the other sports without a football team).
I can see them joining this non-Power Pac12 and having a competitive football team and still retaining and having success in the non-football sports.
The ones who are all about academics and don't care about sports would rather us just join the Ivy League or create a West Coast Ivy League.
Cal and Stanford are going to use academic reputation to recruit, and not to make decisions about conferences.
This seems like a far more logical way of operating.

The schools that were members for a century were large well funded institutions and had AAU status when shit started blowing up. They proved it’s flexible when they took Nebraska who was already on their way out of the AAU. If a lesser academic institution was in the neighborhood with massive athletics media value they’d take them in a heartbeat that just doesn’t exist up there.
The Big 10 is always going on about their academic consortium, like they can only collaborate with schools that are part of their athletic conference, academically.

Seems to me the goal of the Pac was to become the best non-power league and the path to do that was by getting the serious MWC schools on board.
Now they’re the only conference besides the MAC to exist solely on the same side of the Mississippi, and have the largest G6 (we have to call it that, right?) fanbases in one spot.
I think this is a league that understands their position really well and has put together a compelling product that I’ll be tuning into. Most of the time, the G6 rep will come out of here, I suspect. In hoops, they will be extremely salty and there will be a debate as to whether they’re a high or mid major.

The biggest red herring out there when it comes to conferences.
Not for some schools.
I think it’s utterly moronic to think who you play sports with says anything about your academics, but that’s 100% how Stanford and Cal think, as well as large swaths of the Big 10.

Fuckin’ love Rocco. Dude’s got the winning gene where he just finds ways to make big plays in the crunch. Downside is he’s a little bit of a gunslinger and when he throws picks (which isn’t often) they almost always end up being pick 6s. He’s a very effective runner, although it’s not a cornerstone of his game.
As a human being, he seems like a great guy. His teammates love him, and after a town in Iowa had a school shooting in the spring of ‘24, he put on a free camp for the kids there.
He’s gonna be 3rd or 4th round guy, and likely have a long career as a backup and elite locker room guy. Then again, there’s a lot of Purdy in his game and maybe he’ll go beyond that.

I wish they would just change the name of the conference. For this shit product to carry the great name of the PAC 8/10/12 is a travesty.
Less of a travesty than 83% of the membership bailing.

This stopped being about what was necessary and unnecessary a VERY long time ago.
All about egos and money.
I agree with Burnt that the ultimate result will end up being 60-64 athletic departments coming together to what is in their own best interest and realistically I recognize the why.
Might not completely agree with it, been through it a couple of times and schools like TCU and ISU are going to have to make some tough choices in the future. I don't think this will be in the best interest of the professional product either, but these decisions are not going to be made for that purpose.
I will find it funny when a few of the programs that have benefitted for decades as being part of certain conferences get culled and learn what others of us have known for years.
It definitely started with money, but I'm starting to wonder if ego is driving the bus. There are definitely folks who just like the idea of relegation simply out of malevolence. They want these institutions to suffer.

If the scheduling is all done within the 64 teams then it will be more entertaining especially OOC. Nobody enjoys watching FBS teams play FCS, nobody enjoys watching Penn State vs Akron, etc.
It will mean more money for all the schools IMO.With the G5 getting into the playoffs it makes their conference games more intriguing and there are plenty of entertaining games at the level.
Having Penn State vs Akron in week 3 is worth getting a Boise vs San Diego State Friday night playoff spot on the line banger, IMO.
And you can shore up non-conference schedules without formal relegation or separation.

What you will see is a 60ish team new league that separates themselves. BIG/SEC will just lead the way for this. They will want to have basketball and baseball as part of it....
Yeah, I could see that happening but it still feels totally unnecessary and would create a less entertaining product across the board.
Especially if you have a hoops tournament without mid and low majors.

All those schools outside the top 50% are contributing views to the top 50%.
If those top 18 were actually sharing money outside their conferences, I'd get it. They're not. So what do they gain by refusing to let the others play? And also, Tony Altimore? Lulz.

That's at least 21 slots for 42 schools. And some will be off any given week with 2 byes, so that really gets you to a minimum of 48 schools. And then there is room for late nights, TH nights, F nights and the ACCN. Plenty of room for 60-72 schools.
I really think if you make the top division any smaller than that, you start to weaken ratings.
That's why (well, and of course personal wishcasting) I don't think a Big 10/SEC break off would result in anyone making more money. If you start marginalizing wide segments of the sport and relegating them to a lower division, those fanbases aren't going to be that interested in watching the higher division. Right now Big 12 and ACC fans are watching plenty of Big 10 and SEC games, largely because those schools play in the same division and what happens in those leagues can affect your team. If that goes away, so do those viewers. And the same thing happens to a lesser extent with Big 10 and SEC fans watching Big 12 and ACC games. If all of a sudden those schools are all in different divisions where they aren't theoretically playing for the same thing, the amount of viewership outside of one's interest level will go down. Yeah, the Big 10 and SEC have enough fans to be economically viable without those other fans tuning in, but it's still going to mean lower ratings than what they have today, and there will be no tangible gain as it's not like the Big 10 and SEC are currently sharing anything financially with other leagues. They're getting a ratings boost from the rest of the country without having to give them really anything in return other than being involved.
On top of all that, these games are going to be on TV. Even a bottom tier ACC/Big 12 matchup is going to draw more eyeballs than any other programming those networks could put into those slots, and it's cheap to produce. Why would these networks intentionally devalue their own product to that level?

Funny you should bring that up...
We used to sit immediately behind these guys. Years ago there were about 4 guys (who all look like him) that sat together in hand drawn versions of that shirt (as well as their clean cut dad or uncle or whatever). They told me to "clean up my act" after I vigorously cussed out an officiating crew.
We sat in those seats for 5 seasons. Those guys were in front of us every year, and they were always fucking weird.

New McMurtry out today.
Pretty damn solid, but not quite the masterpiece "Horses & The Hounds" was.
I really think that may have been his best album, top to bottom.

why are you up so early? what crop do you have in the fields?
I have friends coming into town later this afternoon that I want to have some beers with, and if I didn't work out at 4AM I wasn't going to work out today.
I also have a 2 year old that is in constant motion when she's awake, so the wife and I have worked out a schedule where I get up early and work out in the morning (while kid is still sleeping) and she can work out after work since I take the kid.

I don't know exactly what came out of my mouth, but during the 2013 ISU/UT game where we stopped you on the goal line, forced a fumble (which would have ended the game) but the refs ruled down by contact, I let out a stream of vitriol at the absolute top of my lungs that prompted this guy to turn around and tell me to "clean up my act".
It had to be baaaaad.

I'm an old Millenial raised by very tail end Boomers. My folks graduated in '77. My old man's record collection was full of the classics and hugely influential on my taste as an adult. Lots of Steely Dan, Zeppelin, Stones, Deep Purple, Petty, GNR. My old man kept up with contemporary music well into his 30's, so even though I was in grade school when grunge exploded, the Big 4 were a huge part of what I was musically exposed to.

The "casuals" exist, but they're mainly UT or A&M fans during football season. They'll tune into UH for hoops, though.
Front-runners
That’s kind of what I was wondering about. People who are default UT or Aggy fans that aren’t that dedicated and open to other things.
I’d have to imagine Houston is big enough that people like that exist.

I think the Coogs would be smart to just lean into the Oiler blue full time. I think it would help them with some casuals around town (assuming such a person exists).

I like that better than the "Bugle Bird" or the beveled (overdone) I-State
I hate Bugle Bird, don’t like beveled I State, but I really like flat I State.
Script Cyclones was used a lot in the 80’s. I had baby clothes with it on there.
Texas has no reason to do a fucking thing uniform wise, IMO.

While I completely agree with your general premise, I had a buddy who lived in SoCal for 5 years and somewhere after year 3 got sick and tired of the weather never fucking changing.
