Yeah, that’s true.  It was aching for renewed development regardless.  The head scratcher remains the Central Library.  Despite its size, unless you take into account its event space of which it has ample, it’s not even in the Top 5 libraries in Central Texas for circulation.  This despite being far the largest.  And even with robust TI offers, nobody wants to take over the dead restaurant space inside of it.  And they continue furrow employees at an increasing rate and/or have them go work at outlying branches where people still actually go and checkout books and attend community events.

as for the west campus stabbing.  Go and walk around there sometime during semester.  It is way more densely populated nowadays.  It is a literal city within a city.  That more crime doesn’t occur there in this era is a testament to the University and law enforcement.

I'm meh to neutral on City Hall.  The Central Library is bad gubmint on steroids.

I'm even more bothered by the Seaholm Power Plant.  That could have been a terrific Austin cultural resource if it had been done correctly.

I had 17 or 18 white claws last night. I got to work an hour late. I drank a white claw on my way there. I went to the liquor store at lunch - I'm drinking in my car right now.

This isn't going in a good direction.

I don't know what to do. What I haven't done is go put my ass in a chair at an in-person meeting. I feel like that's always the answer. They tell us there is a solution - not there are some solutions.

There's just a part of me really, really fighting the AA shit and I don't know what to do about it.

You are on the right thread. Listen to these guys.

That's a pretty small airport, so options are going to be limited, though it does appear that there's a daily AA flight from Dallas that goes there.  Still, I think the San Jose airport is going to have more (and probably cheaper) flight options, and it's an easy 90 minute drive from that airport to Carmel down the 101 and the 1.

That American flight is what attracted me.  I'm getting tired of fighting through big airports if I don't absolutely have to.

I know there is a scantily posted Monterey/Carmel thread, but I’m trolling for expert opinions that might not go there.

I visit SF every 4-6 months to visit my adult daughter, her husband and growing family. They come in from the central region when we visit but this time she wanted us all to go to the Carmel area. I’ve never been.

It will be 4 adults and a toddler. Any screaming recs on places to eat or see/do? Anything to avoid?

Subscribed.  We were in SF for a family event in December.  Cannot see us taking the time to go there again.

But we took a couple of days after that to see Monterey, PG, and Carmel.  So great.  I think I'd go back there just to eat grilled octopus!  Flying in directly to Monterey looks like the way to go.

I think that’s the price now at fucking Mi Cocina.

Mi Cocina now does an upcharge if you want borracho beans instead of refritos.  What is the world coming to?

Yeah, we kept throwing money at my son from College days to drug lawyers, to DUI lawyers... he's 30 now and will be a guest of the state of Oklahoma for a while.

I had a cousin who went down that path.  His Momma was always glad when he was incarcerated.  She could sleep well at night not worrying about him getting into more trouble!  The family had to cut him loose financially regarding bail or lawyers after a couple of trips to Huntsville.

I found it to be a bit of a shithole.

Rainbow falls is OK I guess.

Hilo is a bit gritty, but I think in a good way.  Not so shiny and touristy, and decidedly more Asian than the Kona side of the island.

My wife drug me kicking and screaming to the botanical garden.  I ended up really enjoying it.

It's a little more complicated than that.  Maybe I value my privacy too much, but having to publicly file all of the detailed schedules about your finances and possessions would make any kind of BK filing an absolute last resort for me.

  9. I don't know all the details, but the guy is two years from a paid off house, has a good job, has $90K in high interest debt -- allegedly from helping out family members in an emergency.

Bankruptcy is just about the last thing to even think about.  SMH.

I could do all this stuff and it will not take 5% of the suckage off the trip. (But thanks for recs)

Each trip our there just keeps getting worse

It sounds like the destination is not the presenting issue.  Good luck.

  11. The Costco stores in Hawaii also have great local fish -- some fresh, some frozen.  We've done the condo route on Big Island, Maui, and Kuai and have always hit the local Costco on arrival for most all of our provisions like that (read: wine) and then do the local farmer's markets daily for fresh produce -- we enjoy cooking, especially on vacation!

  12. Pretty good synopsis about the Art story here:

Austin Tells Public Safety Advocates To Hold Its Beer By Rehiring Former Police Chief Art Acevedo

    https://thehayride.com/2024/01/austin-tells-public-safety-advocates-to-hold-its-beer-by-rehiring-former-police-chief-art-acevedo/

The only thing that this piece overlooked was Art's TV camera appearances and dissembling after the Houston "drug house" police shootings that weren't actually at a "drug house."

Thanks.  In looking at some websites (including the one GenXer linked), it appears now that only 4WD vehicles are allowed on the portion of the road above the visitors center.  If true, that might be enough to get me to spring the extra $$ for a Jeep.

Cool.  I misspoke.  We didn't go past the visitors center.
