  1. Highly recommend the book “Andy & Don” if you’re a fan of the show - was written by Don’s brother in law, Daniel de Visé. Tells the story of both of their early lives/childhoods and their real life friendship. Not a smear job by any means but does uncover the real people behind their characters/public personas. Very entertaining and a quick read.

  2. Knots left after season 5.  The show sucked after that.  I don’t consider that show the same show.  Don Knotts won the Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy series all 5 seasons.  One of the great comedic actors of all time.

Andy said pretty much the same - saw it an article years ago. He said the first few years were gold/magic, and then after Don left it was just another show.

One of my all time favorite shows (again, the first years) - Andy and Don were amazing together but they also did a great job with all the side characters (Otis, Gomer, Floyd, etc.) of creating the little world of Mayberry.
  3. She never mentions the word addiction

    In certain company

Yes, she'll tell you she's an orphan

    After you meet her family

Mary took to running with a travelin' man

Left her momma crying with her head in her hands

Such a sad case, so broken hearted

    She was a fast machine

    She kept her motor clean

She was the best damn woman I had ever seen

    Could be holding you tonight

Could quit doing wrong or start doing right

You don't care about what I think

I think I'll just stay here and drink

  4. I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
    I only wish my words
    Could just convince myself
    That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

    Between Hank Williams' pain songs
And Jerry Jeff's train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas there ain't nobody feelin' no pain

    So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you'll always let it be me

  5. Only way to measure historical greats in sports is how they fared vs. the peers in their era.

Babe Ruth hit more home runs in 1920 than any other team in the American League.

    Any. Other. Team.

No one today is even sniffing the farts of that kind of dominance.

Put that stat in your pipe and smoke it, whippersnappers.

  6. In the twilight glow I see them
Blue eyes cryin' in the rain

    Coffee black, cigarettes,
start this day, like all the rest

These arms of mine, they are lonely
    Lonely and feeling blue

    Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly

If you’ve got the money, honey
    I’ve got the time

Hey pretty baby are you ready for me
It's your good rockin' daddy down from Tennessee
I'm just out of Austin bound for San Antone
With the radio blastin' and the bird dog on

    Everybody's high on consolation
Everybody's trying to tell me what is right for me, yeah

    On a warm summer's eve
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler
We were both too tired to sleep

  7. Jerry...Newman and I are engaged in an epic struggle for world domination.  It's winner take all...people cannot be trusted.

Oh, it's "Risk." It's a game of world domination being played by two guys who can barely run their own lives.
  8. I always figured New Year’s Eve was created specifically to land a week after Christmas for folks to blow off steam/get loaded after spending the holidays with their families (see thread in this forum for Exhibit A).

  9. When these topics come up I think of the old Tex Schramm (original Dallas Cowboy GM back in the day for you whippersnappers, UT class of 1947) prediction decades ago that with TV driving everything, eventually the games would just be played in a giant TV studio.

Probably won’t get there in my lifetime, but with the fan experience and attendance continuing to decline (not to mention the cost escalating) and the at home viewing experience as good as it is, may not be far off.
