  1. Anyone fish Laguna Madre yet this year? Felt like it wasn’t great last summer due to the freeze fish kill. Wondering if it’s any better this year.
Buddy has been out a few times and getting into the reds.

  2. Laredo Taco Company is opening at a new flagship / concept test 7-Eleven store on Sylvan at 30.
I went to the soft opening earlier this week.  It's way fancier than the gas station Laredo Taco Company spots in the Valley*, but damn, this is Valley food.  Excellent!  I am from the Valley but live in Oak Cliff.  There are all sorts of good taco spots around here and a Taco Deli, but none do a good South Texas style flour tortilla breakfast taco (the closest is the Taco Cabana at Cochrell Hill).   I had the papas con huevo, which was made the homestyle way -- not scrambled eggs with something on top -- fried up together in one pan, perfectly seasoned.  I don't eat many flour tortillas any more, but these will be the exception.  I can't wait to try the picadillo and other lunch items that I hope are also seasoned like they are in the Valley.   Around here, the Mexican food is way too often from Oaxaca or other interior parts of Mexican.  It's good, just different.  This is home cooking for me.  If you have been to the Valley, you know Laredo Taco Company from just about every Stripes down there.  This is their first spot in Dallas.
*The 7-Eleven store itself will be different.  I didn't' get to go all the way into the store, but I understand it will have craft beer available on tap for growlers and maybe also wine on tap.  There will be a coffee bar, smoothies and kombucha also on tap.  Gentrification!
I just noticed that the new 7-11 on 380 headed out of Princeton has a Laredo Taco in it. I'm from Harlingen so definitely will be hitting it up soon.

  3. Miller's Smokehouse in Belton.
The 2 times I went many years ago, it was good but nothing fantastic. Went on one of their all you can eat rib nights an was underwhelmed.
  4. Headed to Austin from Dallas for a conference in a few weeks.
Traveling down on a Monday and want to stop along the way for a BBQ lunch.
Being a Monday, a lot of places are closed.
Suggestions on a place to stop that is convenient off 35.

  5. I don’t recall who mentioned it up thread, but the ducks appear to have stayed in Kansas this year. I don’t duck hunt but I have several friends that would probably choose duck hunting over sex with Yasmine Bleeth. They typically hunt Knox and Haskell counties and clean up, but this year the only success they had were two trips up to the Kansas plains.
You have some messed up friends.
  6. Annual Buddy Hunt tradition continues. Have had better years for ducks but 10 guys in 2 blinds is always a hoot.
Still had a decent hunt and cooked up some of the ducks from last weekend in kabobs on the camp fire.45d7ec84f9022af296270b02fc2133eb.jpg365d8cff842b2cdaac83d5ec2738510c.jpg0e3da394eb4709de650adc1341943bf1.jpg

The typical fee that goes to the organization is between $100-$150 for the weekend which not only includes the hunt but all meals and lodging.

  8. Crazy evening hunt. Had a yearling come in a little before 5. Around 5:20 a doe comes walking in. Glassed it real good because lots of nubbin bucks around. Slick head, not dark on the hind legs. Kind of scrawny and two tone color.
Told my girl to take it. Good shot, walks off 20 yards and piles up. Gather our stuff up and text our ride back to base camp.
Walk up and the damn thing has balls. WTH??? Check it's head and two bumps but not covered by skin. Freaking thing had shed both it's antlers. He was malnourished, fur was two colors because it had already started changing.
Biologist checked it's teeth back at camp and said it was a 2.5 year old. Testicles were small, no dark markings on hind legs, skin was thin and could see backbone.
Questioned about it possibly being sick but when processing the meat was a good color and nothing odd about it.
They are testing for CWD and other things on all the deer harvested so when I get results (about 4 weeks) I'll know for sure if anything is wrong.
Back at it in the morning to see if she can go 3 for 3.

  9. Same. Not a big fan of his ribs. Like you,not going to turn them away but I don't put them as part of my order.
Pork steaks are a huge bbq gathering meal in St. Louis where they are from so his recipe derives from there.
