Fine.  We can get healthcare back.  We can't get lands back once they are sold and privatized.

    All of this.

The AI provision banning any regulation for a decade was also scrapped. Maybe responsible governance can address that shit 4 years from now.

The Dems need to take the House in 2026 and play hardball with the budget and try to chip away at the edges of this monstrosity.

Then it would be the first time in our history that a political party just gave up on an election cycle in exchange for a once in a generation terrible piece of legislation.  The cuts to things in this bill will reverberate for decades.

If this bill can undo prior legislation then there is no reason a future bill couldn’t undo this one.

Where by the airport? Along 90 heading towards 99??

Yes, on the north side of the highway but out of view. You can see some signs of construction if you look across the airport after passing hwy 6.

That's her. In the run-off we were stuck between choosing her or this guy. I'm sorry. Can't trust cowboy hats here in the suburbs.

  4. There are (were?) plans to build a gas power plant here in Sugar Land city limits, by the airport. I have been aware of petitions that have been going around, and the issue came up in the local mayoral and city council elections last month. The anointed candidate ended up losing the mayoral race to some current council member known locally as "Ms. No" who literally is against everything. I went along with the fervor even though I reflexively dislike NIMBYism and have been telling people I know that this is a problem at the state, and now federal level, and not a local issue.

But after this bullshit, turns out the NIMBYs were right all along, and a new strategy needs to emerge where the fight occurs at the local level. In my dream, it would also entail neighboring communities helping each other out to the point of encompassing the entire state.

People are waking the fuck up.

Lee pulls federal land sales from megabill

Sen. Mike Lee’s decision to withdraw his proposal removes a major headache for GOP leadership in both chambers as they look to advance their megabill.

🤞may this be the shortest thread in the CR.

also...did the pressure actually work?? cuz it seems like the pressure worked.

YES, the pressure actually worked. I am very much relieved and energized this morning to read this after going to bed last night fearing the worst!

And you know what? This bill isn't done yet. It now goes back to the House where they'll need to iron out the differences. For starters, the House bill cut $800B from Medicaid. The Senate version cuts $1 trillion AND MAKES CUTS TO MEDICARE. Yes, Medicare. For old people. Retirees. What that means is that some chickenshit GOP reps who were counting on the Senate being the sane ones and watering this thing down somewhat, as is usually the case, now need to start feeling the heat from their constituents. This is probably not something they are normally used to, as this third rail of American politics has never been touched.

People need to get on the fucking phone and call their reps. Call their Senators too. If nothing else, make their staffers walk into work Monday morning with hundreds of messages on voicemail.

    (202) 224-3121 gets to the congressional switchboard. They will connect you directly with your rep's or senator's office if you don't want to find the number directly.

  6. I'm happy a progressive won but the real learning here is that the Dem establishment can't just shove any candidate down voters' throats, especially a rapey has-been. Rejecting Cuomo sends a message that the base has integrity, even if the party bigwigs do not.

Real talk, before the "total obliteration" of those nuclear sites had anyone in the general American public actually lost any sleep over brown guys in turbans at any point in the last decade? I just don't think the Islamophobia is at those post-9/11 Toby Keith levels anymore.

They have done nothing to prime the American people for an extended conflict.

It's political and diplomatic malpractice. Bold strategy Cotton. There's no way he can wiggle out of this jam...

Early estimates have over 5 million people protesting yesterday. No deaths, one shooting potentially linked to a protest in Utah

by comparison, Jan 6 had 70,000 protestors, with 1,600 getting arrested and two people dying

I heard 11 million. No idea where that comes from. Our local protest swelled from about 300 in April to over 1000 yesterday, and I think we were around 3 million nationally for Hands Off.

  9. A quick word about the cops.

The majority, if not all of the "official" protests organized by Indivisible/50-50-1 were planned in conjunction with local police. The cops will be there and that should surprise nobody. This was confirmed to me by our local Indivisible chapter. They won't need to enforce anything unless outside agitators show up. National guard and the jarheads are another matter, but they are too few to be anywhere other than the big downtowns.

Go home when the event officially ends, and we have a responsibility to police our own side. If we get the turnout I'm expecting, and we keep things civil, we will win over a lot of folks on the sidelines.

Take a page from 1969 and try to dress up a bit. Leave the black hoodies at home. I'll be tucking my polo shirt into my shorts. You'd think I'm a (tanned) English tourist.

  11. We knew but weren't involved and also didn't give approval. Trump has to be pissed Israel blew up the deal, but I don't think a deal was likely anyway. Not with this clown crew running things.

Trump pissed Bibi off a few weeks ago when he wouldn't agree to having US forces help in an attack on Iran. I believe this was Bibi giving him the finger.

Any distance put between us and Israel is good. Fuck AIPAC.

I don't understand the constant demands that protests be peaceful. Like obviously, we don't want people getting killed, but peaceful protesting doesn't fucking work. Hell, the Biden admin arrested over 3,500 peacefully protesting, pro-Palestinian college students alone, not even counting the non-student protestors that were arrested and brutalized around the country.

Civil disobedience and disruptive protesting is the only kind that works. They're going to try and kill you either way.

You do realize those peaceful protests were incredibly effective against the Administration that was in office at the time.

Protest movement doesn't do shit without a charismatic leader that takes over and incites millions to action.

That's what the Democrat politicians lack. They don't want a fight. They want to keep pre 2025 status quo and just collect their bribes and live in their gates mansions.

What they aren't understanding is trump and republicans are making a play for total power taking away their way of life. There is no more status quo. They either have to fight or they will lose the golden goose they've been fed by for decades.

If Newsome understands this and is willing to now be the leader who will mobilize and fight then it sets the stage for a sort of civil war. Fought first online, then taken to the streets. Millions of American citizens who hate what trump and Republicans are doing are just waiting to be led into resistance, and the worse trump gets the more motivated people will be to fight. It just can't happen without a true leader.

    This is lunacy.

The resistance now needs to be leaderless, organic, and grassroots. That will make it credible. That’s how it will actually make republicans think twice, give Democratic politicians a spine, and get everyone else off the sidelines. It should at least have the veneer of non-partisanship.

Besides, if arresting politicians is now a thing, there’s no reason to put all our eggs in one basket.

In any case. There are leaders (plural) if you look for them. Go to your nearest no kings rally and find out who your local leaders are.

    General strike.

We're getting there. We need to follow Organized Labor's lead with that one.

Until then, get yourself to a demonstration. The No Kings rallies are going to be BIG this Saturday. Already 1800 are planned nationwide. For comparison, the Hands Off protests had 1500 locations. My burb had 300 show up to a random library back then. This go around, it'll be in the busiest commercial center in the city. Other events across the country are similarly leveling up. I won't be surprised if 10 million show up in total. Don't miss out. Bring a sign that's Surly worthy.
