  1. To me, it's almost more disappointing that Leal cancelled on our spring game than the actual commitment. Getting guys on campus at the same time so that they can form bonds and start picturing themselves playing together is incredibly powerful. I'm sure we'll try to bring him in for our big weekend on 5/4, but as of right now that's not nearly as big a group and most of those guys will be on officials. Hope Whittington keeps his F-250 gassed up.

It's only a 180 if you believe EJ and some of the other $9.95'ers on this side of the aisle.  The Aggie $9.95'ers were also confident.  It was a surprise that EJ and others were wrong and the Aggie ones were right, but after having a train run on them the last year and a half, they had to get one right eventually.

Even setting aside what the $9.95ers were saying, we had invested a LOT of time in the Leal recruitment. He's visited a bunch, and so on. I agree that it's really puzzling for him to shut it down so quickly. I do think that part of it is this site underrating the aggy staff's recruiting chops. They've got some hitters for sure.

Anyway, came here to ask who our backup plans for Leal are. I haven't heard many names at all. Doesn't seem like a great year in state at DT beyond Leal.

  3. How long is the trip? We stayed at Arenal (volcano), which is inland so no beach but had TONS of outdoors stuff to do. Hiking, ziplines, canyoneering, ATV riding, hot springs, etc, etc. Can't recommend it highly enough. If you have enough time, and that kind of stuff interests you, you could easily to a few days there then a few days at the beach. It's a small country.

For our beach portion, we went over to the Caribbean coast (Puerto Viejo) to try to find something a little more off the beaten path. Honestly, it was kinda meh though. In retrospect, I wish we had just saved time and gone to the Pacific side (where I understand there is much more tourism infrastructure). It's not that it wasn't nice in Puerto Viejo, it's just that I don't think it was worth the trip all the way across the country from Arenal.

While I'm not worried this far out, I do find the perceived monumental change in recruits decisions and opinions after one weekend very peculiar. I truly wonder what Aggy and OU coaches are telling these kids because this is something I don't think I've ever encountered with so many recruits seemingly flipping opinions all in one shot.

    Time to counter-punch.

Remember when the very early perception was that we were falling behind, but it was mainly just because no one had visited us yet? I think that's a little bit of what's going on, but in reverse. OU, aggy, tOSU, etc coaches aren't morons, I'm sure they can put together a pretty nice OV weekend. Lots of these guys were "trending Texas" because we'd had them in to visit more recently. We'll get our shot this weekend and then the narrative will swing again. Leal is the only one that's really confusing to me, we've been building a relationship with him for ages.

I updated the visit tracker with latest news on all the spring game visitors: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1i5Kk5NNdAVIc_sGJSDovph0VSmwrJuCcFufuvCDnJ5g/edit#gid=0

  5. Both Nahlin and Wells are saying "It's not over." The expectation seems to be that Leal will commit to A&M sometime today.

Wells also said Texas will try to move up Leal's upcoming OV.

Thank God. The $9.95ers have been nails in this recruitment so I feel much better now.
  6. Been eyeing the blower and weedeater for a while.  I had a corded B&D mower that lasted me 9 years.  Got a rider after that that lasted about 5.  Craftsman after that lasted about 2.  Went back to electric and am loving it.

I have been very happy with the trimmer and blower so far. Excellent power and I can use them both for my 8,000 sf lot on one charge of my 2.5 Ah battery. Only complaint that I have is their OEM trimmer cord is trash. Buy a spool of good stuff at Home Depot and wrap your own.

I've got one, too.  Had it for about 3--4 years at this point.  It powers through small limbs and other yard debris just fine.  Love not having to worry with maintenance.  Not a huge yard.  Not a small yard.

I'm thinking about going eGo when my current gas mower dies. I have their trimmer and blower and they both kick major ass. Make me very happy that I'll never have to fuck with maintaining a two stroke engine again in my life.

If the OP wants gas though, Honda engines are the way to go IMO. And I say that as a person that hates the Honda corporation with the power of a thousand suns and hopes they go out of business. Note that you don't have to pay the premium for a Honda mower to get a Honda engine. I've got a Husqvarna with a Honda engine currently. Starts on the first pull every single time, cuts great.

should be able to load a kamodo/bge with enough lump charcoal and a few wood chunks to last for an 18hour cook.  the heavy ceramic enclosure keeps the temp w/o the need for a lot of fuel.

But you should check out the temp regulators as that would solve one of your biggest headaches.

Charcoal is never a problem, but a few chunks of wood usually only gives me good smoke for an hour or two before burning out. I'm obviously doing it wrong somehow.

  9. New event is pretty fun. Did a 4-stack with friends last night and we beat the any heroes version pretty easily on hard difficulty so we decided to try it again with 4 supports. It went surprisingly well until we got cocky at the very end and decided to keep killing bots instead of just getting on the damn chopper. Like 4 of those big bads eventually showed up at the same time and kicked our asses lol.

what are you having to adjust on a kamodo constantly?  I've got a bge and they should be pretty similar.  if you do an add on fan manager like a guru or bbq-stoker, it's pretty much on auto pilot for overnight cooks.  I've got the bbq-stoker and still beg off to go check on the egg, but it's really just to get outside and drink another beer.

A buddy brought a traeger out on a Y-guides campout and we did not get the grease drain tilted properly and the grease did not run out of the box, but collected on the base and eventually caught fire and promptly caused the unit to shut off.  Once we got it situated the right way, it cranked out a really good brisket.

I've never gotten the hang of getting the temp steady. It's just a constant tinkering with the air vents to get it in the right range and keep it there. Then to add more wood chunks, you have to remove the meat, grate, and heat deflector. It's a real pain in the ass.

Absolutely.  Eight teams per conference would also allow marquee out of conference scheduling.

Eight 10-team conferences in Division 1-A. Round-robin schedule, conference winners to the playoffs. Last place in each conference relegated to 1-AA and replaced by those conference winners. Would be insane. Only flaw is that it kind of minimizes OOC games (would be useful for playoff seeding and not much else).

You need to factor in how long you intend to live there.  5 years min. to start to recoup costs.  This is an investment as much as anything.  If you're investment will pay for itself when you sell, and or make a better return it's easier to sink the dollars in the project.

The plan (yeah, I know) is to stay in this house at least until our kids make it through high school. So a good 15-20 years. Resale value is floating around up there in my head with everything else, but it's lower on the list. Who knows what the future truly holds, but in my mind ultimately we're doing this for us and not the next owner.

  13. I've always loved architecture, ever since I was a kid. Thought about starting this thread many a time at the old site, just never happened for one reason or another.

Anyway, I actually meant to start this yesterday but got busy and forgot. The reason is that it was the 100th birthday of Jørn Utzon, Pritzker Prize winner and designer of probably the most beautiful and recognizable building currently on the face of this planet:

If you're not familiar with the story of Utzon's design, Google it because it's pretty fascinating. Long story short, he kind of came out of nowhere to win the design competition, certain powerful people in Australia never liked it, the design and construction became a giant fiasco, and Utzon himself didn't even end up attending the opening.

Any other Surly architecture fans out there? What are some of your favorite buildings?

  14. Regarding DB, don't forget that we've bought a Jaden Davis lottery ticket as well. He apparently likes us enough to use one of his OVs on us.

Also, we don't talk about him much in this thread for obvious reasons, but we haven't/won't stop recruiting Brian Williams, correct?

How big is the house?  I doubt you're getting all of that for $100k.  I just re-did the master bath, did new counters and appliances in the kitchen, and re-did the flooring in the other bathrooms in my house and did paint and carpet.  I think it ran me close to $65k and I get a lot of things cheaper than the average person because I have relationships with subs who do a lot of work for us and I got the appliances for half price because we buy a lot from Whirlpool.  Retail mine would have been  $80-90k.

We've been looking at stuff in the 3000-3500sf range.

Yep that job looks more in the $175k and up and that probably doesn't include design fees unless it's a pretty small house.

Y'all got me thinking a lot. Having no experience to fall back on, seems like I've been dramatically underestimating the price of home remodels. I'd guess that's pretty common. Rough guesses, based on not much more than the feedback I've gotten in this thread so far:

    • Kitchen - $60k
    • Master bath - $20k
    • 2x secondary baths - $10k/each
    • Floors - $25k
    • Trim/paint/misc - $20k
    • Subtotal = $145
    • +20% cost overruns and other bullshit = about $175 k

Where am I low or what am I forgetting? Seems like our best move might be to look for a house that's more ready for move-in than we'd been thinking and/or has stuff that we can live with waiting to do.
