  1. Matt Campbell or Pat Fitzgerald seem like the most proven guys that are reasonably attainable. Both have overall winning records in conference play in Power 5 conferences for 5 years or greater at schools that are clearly at a disadvantage to their peers. Bring 'em both in and see which one kills the interview.
  2. Kubiak pros- would hire the right OL coach and fix the OL we could run the ball well he is by all accounts a pretty dang good guy he has a lot of high level experience Kubiak cons- tons of experience but all NFL an older NFL guy, has a Mike Shermanesque feel to the hire can he recruit?
  3. I wonder how the players feel about this season. Are they glad it was played? I know it's been messy and weird but it's not been overall more dangerous due to Covid than a regular football season it seems so far. There were a lot of predictions that it might be. BYU/Coastal was a pretty entertaining game. It never would've happened in a regular year. It doesn't really make up for all the crud of this football season but I can't say I would rather have had no football either.
  4. Kubiak has 4 Super Bowl rings, one as a Head Coach. I think the job probably wouldn't be too big for him at least. He probably knows some really good OL coaches. I like him better than Fickell or Cristobal types. The key thing is not to get locked into some enormous contract.
  5. I agree Kubiak is an interesting idea. An Aggie but also from the State of Texas. I do think his offense could translate to college. As long as you don't overpay, lock into some enormous contract, then I could live with the bet.
  6. Look Herman wasn't a bad bet. He had promise and we all know many coaching hires don't work out. The bad bet was extending him after the Sugar Bowl. That is why we are in the fix we are in now. Hiring another up and comer or a coach from a smaller school is not an auto-fail scenario. Mainly, I think we need to stop thinking that money whipping some guy is going to magically solve our issues. Let's find another good bet and make it and see how it plays out.
  7. THIS is the meat of it. If you can't get a sure thing, then you have to take a chance. Instead of just throwing money around, CDC should think carefully about which coach gives us a good bet on elevating us at reasonable risk. But we have to know it's a bet, not a sure thing. Personally, I think Pat Fitzgerald is a pretty strong candidate. But you can see how Traylor could be a low risk bet especially if he had help assembling a staff.
  8. I think quadrupling his current salary is not really lowballing. Nothing wrong with being smart about money. We wouldn't be stuck in this position if we had been in the past.
  9. I think Traylor is interesting and different than what we have been trying. You have him hire some big time name assistants and double down on Texas high school recruiting to shore up recruiting. Maybe our mistake is thinking throwing money at problems is the best way to fix them rather than think through a real strategy forward.
  10. The most attainable Plan Bs: Matt Campbell - good track record at ISU (but how much is having 4 years of Purdy) plus Toledo Pat Fitzgerald - not sexy but sustained success in a major conference over 14 years, gets regular NFL interest Bryan Harsin - success but he inherited a solid program Jeff Traylor - less proven but deep Texas HS connections, might stabilize recruiting
  11. I think he is basically a Matt Rhule type hire before the huge NFL contract. Really he has much more track record than Rhule does. Not saying he is an Urban Meyer slam dunk type hire, but he has a winning record in the Big Ten over 14 years at Northwestern. He is no flash in the pan and we could do much worse I think. I think he is a solid Plan B type guy to consider.
  12. UT has some academic cachet like Northwestern. We could change his family's financial life without having to be an NFL guy. If he is good enough for the Packers to consider, we should probably try if we end up in Plan B. Sure it's not a sexy hire, but we've tried recent success guys like Herman and Strong. This would be trying something different.
  13. I believe he turned down the Packers job to stay at his alma mater. Yep, it's his alma mater. Still UT is not the NFL. I would kick the tires if we have to. Hopefully we don't. Consistency over time is hard to find. At least you aren't betting on one or two good seasons which maybe are more due a great QB or a solid coordinator.
  14. It's not sexy but I would put forth Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern as a Plan B. 46 years old. 14 years as head coach in the Big Ten with a 62-60 conference record at a program with huge disadvantages. Doesn't make a ton of money. He's no Urban Meyer or Dabo but he is no flash in the pan Strong or Herman either. If you want a good coach, won consistently over a long time, that would be available on our timeline there are not a lot of choices. Oh no doubt it would be a huge emotional letdown from an Urban type hire.
  15. If Kelly has ND in the playoff then he isn't even on the table anyway.
  16. If part of the reason Meyer wants to coach again is to not have his last season coaching mired in scandal, then Texas would be a really strong place to reset his legacy frankly.
  17. We aren't Alabama but we aren't Cal either. We are something else. More like Michigan or North Carolina. We care about athletics and have a long history of success but it's not the No. 1 thing in our identity.
  18. Arkansas would be a helluva lot more relevant recruiting Texas effectively again. They could easily be what Mizzou was a decade ago. And there are real histories and rivalries to revive that I know most of you are too young to know about. Arkansas has to decide between money and relevance. As Nebraska might be finding out, money is not the only thing that matters. This probably isn't very likely but the Big 12 and Del Conte should be trying like hell anyway.
  19. According to USA Today, Nebraska has the 21st highest athletic revenue which would put them 3rd in the Big 12. Even with the revenue drop from B1G, they would probably still be the third richest program in the Big 12. To me, they are a no brainer addition from a conference standpoint and way better than any of the candidates that have been added or discussed for the future. Plus it would change the whole "narrative" around the Big 12 and the other conferences.
  20. I think it's clear that Texas wants to make the Big 12 work because the Pac is a mess and we would be on a geographic island in the B1G like WV is in the Big 12 and the B1G West is really not an exciting cast of characters. Realistically, the Big 12 poaching from the B1G would be a huge narrative shift for the conference and, emotions aside, frankly good for Texas. I'm not saying it's going to happen but it seems there is a crack and we should be working a crowbar in there to work it open wider. As we have seen, opportunities to realign don't come along all the time.
  21. That was a big surprise at the time. Michigan hadn't voted Republican since Reagan I think, but point taken. I still think there is a crack of opportunity for Big 12 to be proactive here and earn some goodwill.
  22. Nebraska is very very unhappy. That article is being retweeted by the Governor of Nebraska. I think they just figured out they are a red state school in a blue state conference. Maybe it is not just about the TV dollars. Time for the Big 12 to finally be smart and proactive and lift up her dang skirt and take advantage of an opportunity.
  23. Mattox pulled a decent year out of worse parts IMO. He was hardly elite but he was a good fit with what Gilbert was trying to do. Hand might not be an elite OL coach but he is pretty well known as a spread running OL coach which seems to be our goal as an offense. Seems like a candidate for a good fit. And he seems like a plus recruiter as well.
  24. I like the Hand hire. Bad OL play just made our offense blow all year. It was the biggest thing to fix. I think there is good reason for optimism.
