It's fucking gross. Looking at hot consenting women (nekkid or not) is awesome but it sucks to see such approval of shit like this from what is otherwise a reasonable group of people. This same group that (rightly) champions women's right to control their bodies shouldn't also applaud manipulating images to sexualize non-consenting women.

My mind agrees with you. Other body parts however have a different opinion.

Getting your news from a citizen journalist is like getting your appendix removed from a citizen surgeon.

(Except the citizen journalist is killing democracy, while the citizen surgeon is only killing you)

The internet is killing democracy. But hey, it makes it easy to get the lulz on surlyhorns or to pay your bills or look at pics of your grandkids who live a thousand miles away!

Some may say that social media is killing democracy. If you can separate social media from the internet, then I guess that is more accurate. But as long as we are going to have the internet, we are going to have social media.

How long after you got your first email account did you get one of those fwd: fwd: fwd: fwd: emails from your uncle? The same uncle who has now probably gone full maga?

First time in a tornado shelter yesterday.  It was eerily calm before the sirens started going off.  Not a fan.  The bars were packed afterwards though

Been in the shelter three or four times spending summers as a youth on the grandparents' farm in N. Texas as a kid. Big hole in the ground with a heavy ass door that opened up from the ground. Concrete steps down into darkness, with only a kerosene lantern and some flashlights. Door was not rainproof so there was usually water in the bottom. Emergency radio would alarm would go off in the middle of the night and we'd grab flashlights and head for the shelter. We'd sit in the dark and look at each other and listen to the emergency radio and slap at mosquitos and sweat in the humidity and hope there were no snakes.

I think a lot of "You know, as a student of history" types never bother to wrap their tiny brains around the fact that yes, while overall life expectancy centuries ago was decades younger than it is now...if you made it to 40, you had a great chance at 50.  And at 50, you had a very good chance at 60, and so on.  The mean is so skewed because of many babies and mothers were lost in the first year of life/pregnancy.  When nearly every single woman was expected to churn out 4-10 children each.  Billions of infants were lost to late-term complications and/or year 1 or 2 premature deaths.  And billions more mothers from complications either during pregnancy, labor, or post-labor infection/complication.  We should probably try and prevent that from happening again but I know a lot of South Dakotans still need child labor and Fox Terriers to work til the land so they can bury mom in the gravel pit later.

Also lot of kids died from diseases that are now preventable by....

    yep, you guessed it...

    vaccines.

It's all risk, no reward for Biden. There is no "beating" Trump in a debate, in the conventional sense.

He beat DOTard like a drum the last time they "debated".

Tents?! They were setting up TENTS!!??!11!??!!11

How about the cops walk over, and inform the tent people that tents are not allowed, and that they need to be taken down. I bet if they asked nicely, 90% of those tents would be taken down.

And the 10% that refuse, write them a ticket and confiscate the tents. Do we really need to arrest people for setting up tents?

Everyone says this, until it’s everything they’ve worked for in their lives at stake. It’s very easy to do the right thing from our recliners, much harder when it’s your life and career on the line. Again, this is how fascism works. For fucks sake, what did the milgram studies teach us?

and I say this completely thinking I’d do the right thing too in that situation. And yet, here I sit in Houston, not leaving Texas, because my kid has a good thing going and because my career isn’t portable, or even replicable, anywhere else. Just hoping things hold together till the kiddo goes to college and we can get out. While risking his future and ours by staying.

For everyone who has talked of leaving and hasn’t yet, why haven’t you? Doing the right thing is always easy, right?

Everyone says that until they see what the next thing is…but on the upside, something even more obviously monstrous that follows will make it easier to cut ties and wash hands entirely.

I stand by my post. Assuming Hartzell is not aligned with abbott, then yeah Hartzell should have told abbott to go fuck himself. If that costs him his job, well then I guess he loses his job. I'm sure with a little effort he would be able to find gainful employment somewhere that he isn't beholden to wannabe fascists.

Honestly, he probably should have resigned when he was forced to fire the DEI faculty. If for no other reason, he would not have been involved in this "next thing".

I understand exactly what they are saying. I'm saying it doesn't fucking matter. He isn't the fucking janitor. He isn't mid-level management. He is the fucking President of the University. He had other options than trample the safety and rights of students.

And if he didn't have any other options, then he should have resigned. And held a press conference explaining why. Go out a hero, not become a fascist enabler.

Still does!  As does the Crown & Anchor just up the street, which is also still there and still making a great cheeseburger.  As an engineering student, I spent a ridiculous amount of time at those two joints.

    Good to know.

Is that the corner of 21st and speedway? Son of a bitch. I used to live in a two story house that was to the left of where that orange front loader is. Right behind Record Exchange (RIP). I'm not sure of this "Sound Exchange" y'all speak of.

Duplex split upstairs and downstairs. We lived upstairs, couple of chick lived downstairs. They would call us about once a week or so to come out and run the drag worms off their front porch. Our kitchen window faced north. You could see into the windows of a Jewish student center. We'd gather and drink beer and watch their aerobics classes at 5 and 6 pm MWF. Anybody remember the ass floss outfits the ladies would wear over their tights when doing aerobics? I member.

Rent was 400 bucks a month (350 in the summer). Not 400 each, 400 total for a two bedroom one bath with kitchen and living room. Literally less than 50 yards from campus. No central AC though. But back then there would only be a handful to maybe two weeks worth of 100+ days during the summer.

And speaking of Liberty Lunch-- I saw Slayer (Hell Awaits tour), GWAR, Dead Milkmen, Morphine, too many more to remember there.

What is the name of the place next to Hyde Park Bar and Grill? I meet up with friends there for morning margs and tacos whenever I'm back in town. Love that place. I think its the same old woman working the register that has always been there.

Taco Shack was where I first learned about breakfast tacos.  I feel like it was called Taco Wars back then.  99 cent tacos.

    One favor

Can we please please please not turn this into a "I miss old Austin thread?"

    oops, too late.
