I’m 100% good with Rondon being the closer

We are not going to need a closer. In October, all of our bats are going to be on fire and we will sweep through the playoffs with the average score being 15-1.

Even though ratings won't be down because the entire world will enjoy us destroying the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers again, the rest of the league will go along with them in instituting a 10-run-rule because everyone is afraid of us embarrassing them in the future. They will call the new rule The Astros Rule.

In order to invoke the rule to end their pain, the opposing manager must approach the crew chief with a microphone connected to the PA system and announce, "The Astros Rule".

Why on earth did he do it?

Coaches help each other. Royal wanted to help Fairbanks keep his job, and being a grad of OU probably factored in as well. I think Bryant might have had a hand in Royal getting the UT job, so Royal wanted to return the favor.

But mostly, coaches just don't really keep secrets. They are always helping each other out.

  3. Leach was wrong in that article when he said no one ever truly learned how to stop the Wishbone.

Jimmy Johnson showed you need to have a big athletic line that can shut down the fullback dive without having to stuff the box and enough speed at linebacker and in the secondary to string out the option. Miami was able to shut down the Wishbone because of the talent they had on defense.

  4. Tim was a little more subtle. I don't recall them really digging into his character that much.

Put any three or four of the characters I listed into a room together and you have an interesting party. Tim would disappear into the background.

Probably trying to get a good angle for his sniper rifle to take them out.

  5. The Britton trade that did not happen and the Verlander trade that obviously worked out may both factor into any dealing Luhnow does this year before the deadline.

Last year the Orioles owner vetoed the trade at the last minute, and the Astros weren't able to get a top end closer. The Verlander deal literally came down to the last minute. The trade was turned into the league office seconds before the deadline. Without Verlander who knows how things would have ended last year?

So maybe Luhnow will not want to be put in that situation again, running against the clock. That could be a reason the Astros don't get Britton, since there are a lot of teams said to be interested in him. The Orioles could hold everyone hostage while trying to get the best possible deal for Britton, and the Astros might decide to pull the trigger on another deal instead of waiting up to the deadline on Britton.

EDIT - Gandorf basically said the same thing.

Really? Luhnow seems like the kind of guy that gets the best possible deal for his team regardless of past circumstances.

Yeah, I don't think Luhnow is going to let his ego or the past get in the way of making a deal he thinks would help the team. If the Orioles are willing to make a deal, and their owner doesn't fuck it up this time, Luhnow won't hesitate to negotiate with them.

On the other hand, Luhnow has already proven he will walk away from the table if the Orioles (or any team) insist on a trade Luhnow doesn't like.

Luhnow is going into trade deals with an open mind and with open eyes.

  7. NY Times article : If the Astros Stop Underachieving, They Could Be Terrifying

    Best part of the article:

    Quote

The danger is that the starters are so good now, they will not be rested for October. Hinch understood that fear and pointed to a schedule poster on his office wall. There were lots of dates shaded in gray, indicating no game.

“We only have two starts, between the beginning of the second half and the end of August, on regular rest,” Hinch said. “And we have a good enough rotation where I don’t even have the flirtation of skipping guys or trying to bring guys back early. That’s essentially like a six-man rotation, with the sixth man being an off-day, so I feel good about that.”

Luhnow said the team would be most cautious with McCullers, who is the team’s youngest starter, at 24. Morton, 34, has never reached 175 innings in an 11-year career. Cole has never pitched past the first round of the playoffs.

Ideally, the Astros could get to September and manage everyone’s rest however they want, plugging a few games with call-ups or long relievers. To do that, though, they must shake the Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics from a division race that is closer than expected.

  8. I don't care about matchups, I want the #1 overall best record and homefield advantage in every playoff series.

I also don't care about whatever stats show that homefield advantage in baseball isn't as significant as in other sports, I want the homefield advantage.

I also don't care that the Astros have been a better team on the road during the regular season, I want the homefield advantage.

The playoffs are a different animal....and the Astros are almost unbeatable at Minute Maid in the playoffs. The Yankees and Red Sox are also much better at home. We can beat them on the road, but I would definitely prefer having more games at home than on the road.

excerpt from the book about Beltran that was printed in last week’s SI. Great read: https://www.si.com/mlb/2018/07/09/astroball-houston-astros-book-excerpt

Also, if I got nothing else from the book, I finally know how to pronounce Sig Mejdal
    (“Who’s dell? MY-DELL!”)

I opened that link in a new tab, but just got around to reading two days later.

We need to bring Beltran back in some way, in whatever limited way he finds acceptable.

If he doesn't want a full-time gig, have him come to Houston for a home stand, join the team on a road trip.....whatever he will accept.

  10. I definitely like the fact that the Yankees (and others) have to play more games than we do after the break. Regardless of record, those extra innings may help wear down their pitching staff, especially since they are in a race with the Red Sox they can't afford to just bring minor leaguers to soak up those innings.

  11. We're not really tied with the Yankees. They have a better win percentage and are two ahead of us in the loss column.

We have played 4 more games than the Yankees. Two more wins and two more losses. If the Yankees go 3-1 in those extra games and play even in the rest, they finish a game ahead. If they go 2-2 then we are tied.

Sorry to nitpick....I agree that we have hell of a ride ahead of us.
