It smells like ass in every one of them.

Ive heard the response many times that “it’s the bread they’re baking there.”

i have been in/to dozens if not hundreds of bakeries in my life.  Not a single one of them smelled like that.

I swear I've walked by a subway when someone opens the damn door and my clothes smell like that awful smell for the rest of the day. It's unbelievable.

  2. Reasonable question - I've worked a version of 9/80 (half day every Friday) for the past 8 or 9 years. I was discussing with a co-worker the other day what $ value I'd assign to it, and we both concluded somewhere upwards of 30k/yr to give it up. For 40 I would consider it depending on other PTO/comp factors. Also, obviously it depends on how much the 40k means to you. If you are only pulling down 80k now then it's a no-brainer. If you're pulling in average Surly money of 250k+ then it means less. Only you can decide that.

I have maxed out my 401k since I started working 15+ years ago. My company has had some match but at this point I don't even remember what it is.  I basically take as much tax deferral as I can.  Max out dependent day care, health care savings account...  Bottom line:  decrease your taxable income as much as possible and find a way to live off the rest of your paycheck and keep saving more on top of that.

Yes this too. I was trying to explain this to a buddy of mine (we are 30) and I think a light bulb went off for him. 401k, HSA, 529, do whatever I can every year to reduce what can go to Uncle Sam.

I am 100% not banking on an inheritance. The great 3 figure inheritance from my Boomer folks ain't going to do shit.

As usual, to many of you on here, CONGRATULATIONS on being so financially secure and in a great place.  Your unheralded, unparalleled successes in life definitely should be TRUMPETED over the struggles of your fellow generation who maybe didn't have all the best support systems you did growing up.

But we really, really are inspired by your ability to tell us how successful and prepared you are/will be and how we the rest of us are just entitled and "banking on" being bailed out.

I don't necessarily view it at trumpeting successes to make others feel bad, but rather providing some counter points to the endless stream of "lol milennials will never retire" articles (though yes a few probably are just trying to brag). Something I think most folks in a similar position can agree upon would be not having any school loans was life changing - even if you don't realize it at the time. Where I grew up I didn't know anyone took out loans for college. I still am not quite sure what it cost me to go to UT but I believe tuition was somewhere around 9k/semester. Looking back now, to Aqua Buddha's well articulated point, this was probably the single biggest thing in life that could set me ahead. At the time I had no idea how big of a deal this was. I thank my parents to this day for that gift, and I have already started saving for my 2 year old's college fund.

I hope most people can recognize that a huge gift of no debt is like starting on the 40 yard line while anyone else with student loans got two yards out of the endzone on the kickoff (or got tackled for a safety)

  5. Pops and I are heading across the pond next summer for a golf trip. Length of stay TBD, but I would guess maybe 5 days? Certainly will do St Andrews, Royal Troon. I'm also thinking Muirfield as well, but outside of that I would love to hear from someone who has done a similar trip. I've been to Ireland (but not for golf) and know that N.I. especially has some great courses, but just don't know if it's worth the hassle hopping across the Irish Sea.

Outside of StA, Troon, Muirfield, Carnoustie, what are some other courses I'm not thinking of?

  6. That was fucking wild, but after reading the article I can see why the cop with the body camera just unloaded on them at the end.

This reminds me of something that happened to my sister's brother-in-law. He was in a meeting at work and his wife calls him and hysterically tells him to come to highway X, where she has pulled over to the median, and help her. She has a situation. He told her to call a garage to come deal with her car, but she says it is not her car, and that he has to come help her himself. Now he understands his wife is the perfect blonde stereotype and that it will be something ridiculous; however, it is his wife so he excuses himself from the meeting and drives out to where she is pulled over.

He gets there and she is standing outside the car. He asks her what is the problem and she says "it" is under the driver's seat and he needs to remove "it". So he asks what "it" is and she says a turtle. So of course he asks how the hell a turtle got under the driver's seat. She says she was driving down the highway and saw a turtle crossing the road. She pulled over and picked it up and put it under the driver's seat so it would not get run over. She drove off and everything was fine for a few minutes until the turtle started to trying to bite her feet as she is driving. That is when she pulled over to the median to call him for help. She says the turtle is very angry.

He goes to the car and opens the driver's side door to see this turtle, basically expecting a small box turtle or something. Turns out his wife had picked up a full grown snapping turtle and stuck it under her driver's seat.

    Wife must be smokin hot.

    This is insane.

Republicans have zero self awareness.  Yeah, democrats guilty of that too but this graphic indicates the Republicans are indoctrinated.

The democrats at least acknowledge the bias on their side with HuffPo and Mother Jones.

The Republicans think Breitbart is less biased than PBS.

    WTF

Actually this chart stood out even more to me. >50% of news is "Misinformation"???? The fuck??

They are progressive. They tax those who can afford it at higher rates as they reach higher levels of income.

    I think that's fair. I understand you don't. That's politics.

What % rate could you consider "punitive"? Obviously not 70. 80? 90? 99?

This is a strange statement. The taxes he has paid in have done a tremendous amount of good despite the govt spending twice what it takes in. The taxes paid by the top 1% allow us to make interest payments on the debt and to keep borrowing at our current (unsustainable) rate if nothing else. That literally keeps people from starving and dying of disease and exposure. And pays to safeguard our borders and interests here and abroad. Many more people than you help unless you are close to their tax bracket. Oh but you clamor for more of their money, I guess that counts for something.

Also he doesn’t have to justify his income to you or anyone else. Why should anyone care that you think they should be happy with the amount of money the govt lets them keep?

This. There's also a really weird obsession with Johnny by some posters who think they know everything. The funniest part is that I am certain there are others on this very site who are much wealthier than Johnny, yet their ire is relentlessly directed at him.

  11. Wife's SUV needs new tires here pretty soon. I have always stuck to Michelin or (sometimes) Contis. Any reason to go away from those brands? Anyone have a model they really like? She's a SAHM so there won't be any offroading, snow driving, mountain climbing, etc. Just tooling around the suburbs going to kid shit. The quieter, smoother, the better. Car currently has some Michelin Latitudes on it that came with the car from the factory, but they are louder than other Michelins I've had in the past.

    Also no pics, TIA

  12. I mean I even said I enjoyed Paris. I liked it with just the wife and I for 2 or 3 days. We also did lots of walking, and once we figured out the Metro that was convenient as well. I'm not sure you could spend a week there with kids and totally avoid the shitty areas. Plus in the summer it's a crowded, hot ass city. Perhaps shit hole was too strong a phrase, but like I said, people love to forget it's a big city like NYC or something.

I mean there's still a lot to do within the nicer parts of the city, but I do feel like it is very romanticized when in reality it is a typical very large city. Some nice areas, and lots of really shitty ones. I'll never forget getting out of Gare Du Nord and thinking "where the fuck am I?"

  14. I enjoyed Paris and Versailles when I went but also remember that Paris is largely a shit hole of a city. Seriously, outside of Versailles and some of the very upscale arrondissements it is a not a nice town.

If going for a week I'd lobby for Italy first (try to get out of Rome and go to Tuscany or other parts of the country-side - Amalfi Coast, Siena, Assisi ), or Ireland, again getting out of Dublin.

Edit: I should mention if she wants "away from the Texas heat" both Italy and Paris are hot as FUCK in July. Ireland would be nice temperature wise.

  15. Great thread. Blows my mind how many folks will have the means but don't want to retire. Perhaps it's because I'm only 30 and retirement is but a distant point on the horizon, but I've always thought once I had $xxMM saved up, I'd peace out for good. I feel like I've got no shortage of things I'd rather be doing than working - whether it's golf, hiking, gardening, woodworking, traveling whatever. My wife's uncle retired recently and is dabbling in wine and cheese making. I'd love to try shit like that.

On the flip side, I do know I will maybe feel different as I get closer to retirement. My dad is 65 and could have retired a decade or more ago but keeps working because he loves what he does. I also think it's not about how much money he has anymore, but the longer he works the more he and my mom can do charity-wise.

Sadly I believe that's probably the real letter because of how absurd it is.

Bought the wife a brand nee car 2 weeks ago. I heard a loud noise while working from home when she pulled it in the garage.

Nice one, but I see you and raise you this -

Wife is in her brand new SUV (I mean it's like 2 months old when this happens). I had pulled in from work and my car was sitting (running) in the driveway - lined up DIRECTLY in line with where I pull into the garage. I got out to roll a trashcan in as she is pulling out for a nail appointment or some shit and she manages to back her NEW car into our OTHER car. Put a nice scratch on her car and a nice dent and scratch in mine. Gotta love family car on family car accidents.
