Is there a mushroom shortage(cue you know who joke/nocr) I'm unaware of?

    Looks good, would slam.

Look, his mushroom dealer was arrested and he hasn't found a new one yet.  Cut him some slack.

We should get a pool together on what happens first:

    1 - Tax evasion/non-payment

    2 - Drug trafficking

    3 - Health code violations

    4 - Liquor code violations

    5 - Fire / Insurance fraud

Would being indicted under the RICO Act fall under number 1, or be its own category?  I could totally see Johnny falling behind on payroll, payments to vendors, taxes, etc., and being bailed out by investors who turn out to be fronts for the hillbilly mafia who use his bar to launder cash from their meth or moonshine business.

Agreed. We called it greyshirting, but redshirting works too.

I was an August birthday and the 3rd youngest in my class and I hated it. There were even a few kids over a year older than me, and I went to a small private school with a class size of 40 from 2-8th and was always conscious of it.

My son was June 30 and he did kindergarten twice but one at San Antonio Academy and once at Keystone (fuck me, right? $$$$) specifically so he would be an older kid. An extra year of childhood.

Did you change your birthday?  Adopt a new identity while on the run from Johnny Law?  Enter witness protection after testifying against the mob?  Why would your birthday not still be an August birthday?  I must know the answer.  That is, if you are allowed to say.  Maybe you died on a hospital table late in the night on August 30 and was revived early in the morning on September 1 and you now consider that your birthday, I don't know.  But again, I must know.

The people I trust near the program say it is his back, and as impactful of a player as he has been for us, given his injury history he may be made of glass.

    • 2020 - Didn't finish the season due to injury (though, he should get a pass for this since KU was basically playing with a bad FCS offensive line).
    • 2021 - Plan was to redshirt him since KU was again playing with a bad FCS offensive line. But Jason Bean and Miles Kendrick both got hurt so they had to play Daniels against KSU. He was such an obvious improvement that Daniels, his parents, and Leipold got on a conference call and decided, go for it - play out the rest of the season (with the major result being the win over Texas).
    • 2022 - Injured vs. TCU and didn't play the rest of the regular season. Returned for the bowl game.
    • 2023 - Back injury in pre-season. Missed the opener, played three straight, now has missed four straight.

The rumor I heard that was floating around was that Daniels was going to sit out the rest of this year, preserve his redshirt, then transfer to Southern Cal and step in as QB there once Caleb Williams departs for the NFL after this year.  I think I heard that Daniels is from the Los Angeles area originally, but perhaps I am wrong about that.

Looks like ISU, KU, and BYU are the only common opponents and all three are close in the standings with ISU currently at the top of that group. The scenario though requires OU, OSU, and UT to win out which includes those three opponents. It’s too early for me to have the bandwidth to work through those scenarios. Let’s all just hope KU beats OU first.

Anything else that you hope happens?  And is there a line in Vegas on it?

  7. Hold it, hold it. Why build? You're better off leasing at a buck and a quarter, a buck and a half a square foot. Take your down payment and put it into CDs, or something else you can roll over every couple of months.

First of all, you have to grease the local politicians for the sudden zoning problems that always come up. Then there's the kickbacks to the carpenters. And if you plan on using any cement in this building, I'm sure the teamsters would like to have a little chat with you, and that'll cost you. Don't forget a little something for the building inspectors. There's the long-term costs, such as waste disposal. I don't know if you're familiar with who runs that business, but I assure you it's not the Boy Scouts.

When I want a single meat, it’s brisket. But that’s just me.

I first read this as "When I want single meat, it's Brisket.  But that's just me."  My next thought was, I don't think @Brisketexan is single.

Good thing you put that "a" before "single".

Ol' Nessie had to make itself scarce to avoid the latest search.  Probably why Sasquatch made an appearance:  to give cover so Nessie could return home.

Also, those "Messin' With Sasquatch" commercials were kind of funny.

  10. Hundreds of vagina plaster casts spill onto road after crash

    Quote

They came a long way — but probably didn’t make the opening.

Hundreds of white plaster casts of vaginas, believed to have been en route to an art gallery, tumbled onto a road in Irkutsk, Russia, last month after a traffic crash.

Bizarre video footage shot by a passerby on Sept. 22 shows a trail of broken vaginas leading up to the back of a truck, CEN reports.

In the short clip, a man believed to be the driver tries to secure his lost load.

“There was apparently no significant material damage, as no one called the traffic police at the time,” the department regional headquarters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs later said in a statement.

“After exchanging details, they apparently left to continue their journeys,” the statement continued.

Vaginal art was pioneered by British sculptor Jamie McCartney, who shot to fame for his 26-foot wall installation “The Great Wall of Vagina,” comprised of plaster casts taken from over 400 women’s genitals.

Other unusual cargo that has spilled onto roads in recent years include nacho cheese in Arkansas; dice in Georgia; and tomatoes in California.

First pitch to his team is what Altuve has proved a master of clubbing. I've never seen anything like it.

So a little bit of research yields the following:

According to Baseball Reference, Ricky Henderson is indeed the leader in leadoff home runs with 81 total.  Altuve has 34 as of September 20th, 2023, which I guess means he has at least 35 now.  That would tie him with Bobby Bonds.

Then there are these tweets from Sarah Langs.

Room for improvement there. But hey, a decent postseason so far for Senor October.

In other news, has anyone every tracked the record for HRs on a team's first pitch of a game, postseason or otherwise? It's almost as if we've come to expect it from Altuve, which is beyond remarkable. The only people who seem not to realize it are opposing pitchers looking to get ahead with high fastballs.

Meanwhile, Bregman's been getting a lot of close (or closer) shaves here lately. Wonder what's up with that. Giving up a HBP right in front of Alvarez seems unwise.

Without doing any research whatsoever, I am guessing any record pertaining to leadoff home runs is held by Ricky Henderson.  But I could be completely wrong about that.

Amish men shunned following emergency alert test that outed them for having cell phones

    Quote

An ex-Amish TikToker revealed that the national smartphone emergency alert got his friends from the religious community in trouble for having phones.

Every US smartphone, television and radio received an alert on Wednesday at 2:18pm ET as part of a nationwide test for an emergency alert system.

Unfortunately for three members of the Amish community, the alert also involved a powerful alarm sound that outed them for having modern devices - which go against their beliefs.

Amish beliefs and traditions condemn modern technology and encourage plain clothing. The community is known for not using any modern devices, dressing in old-fashioned clothes, and even opting for a horse and buggy to get around.

Eli Yoder, a previous member of the Amish community, posted a TikTok to share what happened when the emergency alert revealed the hidden phones of his 'Amish buddies'.

He said: 'Guess what, I just got a couple of my Amish buddies shunned today by the Amish Church.

'Over the few years there’s been quite a few Amish men that reached out and wanted phones, so whenever they request to have a phone I’ll do everything I can to try to get them a phone.

'Not always can I do so, but in some circumstances, I have been able to get them a phone.

'One guy said the elders were coming in his driveway and they were there to speak with him about something that they heard about him, that he might have to get shunned.

'Right when that was going on, the alert went off and it was in his pocket. Now he’s getting shunned for both. Whatever they were about to shun him for and also the cell phone.'

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Federal Communication Commission (FCC) conducted the drill, which sent a code to smartphones.

'This is a test' flashed across screens as the federal government tests its alert system to ensure it is maintained in the event of a real emergency.

Televisions and radios across the US also received alerts.

Conspiracy theorists flooded the web leading up to the drilling, claiming the test would trigger a zombie apocalypse by activating nanoparticles in the Covid-19 vaccine.

The planned test was first conducted in 2012 and has since been used around 84,000 times across the US to warn the public about missing children, natural disasters and other emergencies.

Question about those first videos -- were music videos really a thing before MTV? Just wondering how they debuted with enough videos to run 24 hours a day. Were artists already making them? Did MTV let them know their plan ahead of time and told them to produce videos they could air?

If you browse this list you will see a fair number of repeats.
