I'm digging the media narrative today that the Phillies homefield advantage makes them unbeatable.  It's like last year didn't happen where we punked their asses two out of three with a no-hitter thrown in there to really rub their noses in their own shit.

With all due reverence to the baseball gods, and with the knowledge that we may not even want it, who would get home-field in an Astros-Phillies or Rangers-Phillies WS?  All three finished 90-72.

if it’s just head-to-head, I guess Philly gets it over us but not over Texas.  Philly beat us 2 out of 3 but Texas swept them to start the year.

    Sorry if already discussed…

It goes beyond small sample size. I posted an article on the Dh penalty. It’s real. If you wanted to draw up a person it would disproportionately Affect that person is likely yainer.

And even though everyone knows this, it’s worth repeating: a good defensive catcher who can also hit is one of the most valuable commodities in baseball.  And one the Astros’ franchise hasn’t had since… ever?  I guess early Biggio?

So of course it makes sense to cede that advantage as often as possible.

Nope, not that one.  They're talking about the annular eclipse on Oct 14th.  And they are indeed planning for it, because it is going to be a problem -- for a significant period of time, it will reduce the irradiance received by solar panels  materially -- at its peak, around 15% of what they would produce under a clear sky.  BUT, it's a known event of known timing, and can be planned for.

I’m all for preparedness, but how is this any different or any worse in terms of solar energy than a cloudy day across much of the state?

Latest GFS run from an hour ago has the most optimistic forecast in a looong time. Still very far out and will shock me if it persists in future runs, but they're now modeling a fairly strong, albeit short-lived front making it here sometime next weekend. Temps in the 60's with dewpoints in the 40's from 10/7 through 10/10.

    https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=gfs&region=us&pkg=T850a&runtime=2023092712&fh=246

Will keep an eye out and prepare for disappointment in future updates.

Latest model run still showing the front but not quite as cool.  And it’s the GFS, so it’s Generally Full of Shit.

Still, I think I’d sign up for these temps for Texas/OU.

  5. Absolutely.  It was always going to be annoying to have the giddy baseball media write the obituary, but it’ll be infuriating now because the death was self-inflicted.  And it does go all the way back to Crane dicking around with the GM search last fall/winter.

As an organization we found the recipe for success in the last decade for the first time in our history… and have now apparently decided to actively avoid using it.  And instead we put our full trust in the guy who’s been fired four times because he never won anything.  At least we’re getting the results we deserve.

Plastic grass sucks. It's certainly gotten better but it just can nene react the way real turf does. That being said there are some shit turf managers out there that continually put out a shitty product. Hire someone better. Alabama,  the chiefs,  green bay,  the raiders and many othets...all have great superintendents that get it and put out a great product

  7. The league is batting .238 against Holmes this year.  It was .196 last year.

If the Astros’ analytics department really had Jon fucking Singleton hitting .275 against him, the whole organization is more fucked than we thought.

Seems much more likely to me that the toothpick-chewing moron just didn’t understand the analytics, or just made shit up for the sycophants to parrot all night   Seems like that part worked, too.

Holy shit how close did we come to rolling blackouts?  The Mayor of San Antonio put this out earlier

I was surprised by that too.

Houston, Dallas, and Austin news stations just had the garden-variety “hey, try to conserve this evening” stories posted, while the city of San Antonio was sending out emergency alerts to cell phones saying “Be prepared for power outages beginning at 6 p.m.  Outages will be in 15-minute intervals.”

Did the SA leadership just overreact?  Did they misinterpret what ERCOT was telling everyone?  Or did ERCOT tell SA that it was first in line for blackouts?

  9. As we approach 35 consecutive days of 100+ in Austin, just a quick reminder that plenty of morons in this state are fond of the saying, “if you don’t like the weather in Texas, wait five minutes, it’ll change.”

But have they had conversations about it?

I’m trying to stream on the sports net app and it’s saying not authorized at my location. I’m fucking in the viewing network less than a mile from my house. Anyone else have these issues recently?

Yep.  It’s been that way for me since last season iirc.  Haven’t even tried recently.

One conclusion you might draw from the trade is the "Stros like Salazar better as the defensive part of a platoon with Diaz.  Clearly they don't place a high priority on getting offense from the catcher

Given how 2023 has played out, we can safely conclude they don’t place much of a priority on getting defense from the catcher either.
