where will he be drilling?  Will it be a long drive?

He will drill about 30 miles from campus, so not bad at all.  It's a transportation unit, so he decided he wanted to drive trucks.  Can't say that I blame him because it's the closest to campus.  Very short school, so he was able to have a little bit of a summer before basic and he'll be done with AIT prior to the spring semester.  The education benefits in the NG are very good, and he'll be able to start taking advantage immediately.  The state will reimburse tuition up to the rate of a state university, plus he gets the GI Bill from the feds.  That should be enough to cover the part that the scholarship doesn't.  When he was taking visits, he found out that the coach from the school he chose is in the Guard.  They had a nice talk about that.

ETA:  I know his head is spinning right now and he's questioning every decision he has made, but that will go away soon.  The first week just sucks.

I’d advise that…I think they’re also streaming? I’d wait to watch the finale. Every episode is just loaded with turns…keeps you thinking and guessing.

Streams on Hulu.  That's how I watch it.

  3. Well, one of my boys shipped off to Army Basic Training yesterday.  We live in Missouri (about 60 miles or so west of STL), but he joined the Iowa Army National Guard.  Sounds odd, I know, but he got a half ride to a college in Iowa to wrestle, so he joined the Iowa Guard.  I drove him up to Iowa City (about 4.5 hours away from us) on Tuesday evening.  We stayed in a hotel Tuesday night, then I took him to the Iowa National Guard Readiness Center Wednesday morning.  He did a little final paperwork and then we said our goodbyes and I headed back home.  They took him to Cedar Falls to catch a flight to O'Hare, then got on another flight there to...  STL.  He waited at the airport there for several hours before getting on a bus to Fort Leonard Wood.  At approximately 9:15 PM last night, the wife and I drove to the commuter parking lot at the exit to our town and watched his bus go by.

He called last night at 1:00 AM and read "I have arrived safely at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  I am safe and will call  when I can." click

I was a Marine, so I have a general idea about what he's going through and what's going on in his head.  I worry, but I know that he will be better for this.  We said goodbye to the boy and he won't be the same person the next time we see him.

Nah, I wanna see a 65-year-old Giancarlo Esposito play an 18-year-old Gus transforming into a chicken & meth kingpin.

How do you do, fellow kids' has become the 'how do you do, fellow kids' of memes - The Verge

Or an 80+ year old Jonathan Banks playing a 22 year old rookie cop in Philly.

Big Donkey hit 40 5 years in a row, 6 total, finished with 462, but never finished higher than #21 in MVP voting.

I think the high strike outs hurt him.  His best years were kind of prior (at least I think) to analytics really becoming an important part of baseball.

ETA:  Playing for Cincinnati didn't help him either.  That's probably the biggest issue.

  6. I can't really fault him for giving Pujols a start yesterday since Philly was going with a bullpen game.

I also won't fault Oli for much.  I place the blame entirely on Mo.  He just pisses me off.  When he talks, the inflection of his voice always rises at the end of a statement, like he's asking a question.  Girsch does the same thing and it annoys the shit out of me.  It sounds like neither of them actually know what they are talking about.  Oh, and they suck at their jobs.  I don't know if the fault lies with Mo or the DeWitts, but Mo just irritates me.

  7. Good quote from Edmonds last night

I'm paraphrasing, but:  You can't get it close if you don't score any runs.

Then when they were talking about the likelihood of some coach in Arenado's past telling him to stop being Nolan, Edmonds says something like "well, coaches tell elite athletes that all the time!  I had a coach tell me..."

He just likes to talk about himself.

Foil boat and a 12+ hour heated rest @ 155 degrees in a counter top turkey roaster.  Even better is to rest it in a sous vide.  You can do everything wrong and those two things will get that brisket to well above Rudy's quality. Get most things right and those two things turn that brisket up to 11 on par with Franklin.  I thought the foil boat was gimmicky until I tried it.

Check out Chud's BBQ on Youtube for details.

I'm a fan of Chud's videos.  I have not tried the foil boat just yet, but I'll give that a go next time.

The last brisket I smoked was Mother's Day weekend.  A lot of rain was in the forecast, so I made it the day before.  I put sealed it and did the sous vide thing on Sunday.  It was definitely the best I have made.  Still quite a bit of room for improvement, but it does satisfy my brisket cravings.

  9. I moved from Austin to Missouri about 8 years ago and for some reason have eaten at BBQ places here a few times.  To further add to my bad decision history, I ordered brisket each time.  I have since started to learn how to smoke my own brisket and it's currently below average to average based on standards back home, but it's still the best I have had in Missouri.

ETA:  I did go to KC once and got some ribs there that were excellent...  brisket, not so much.

Was fun watching Pujols pitch until he started giving up multiple bombs.

Also, how a MLB player like Gonzalez throws in the 40's vexes me.

I was expecting to see the Cardinal batters get in the back of the box and then do the shuffle/slide up in the box like they do in softball.
