  1. Unfortunately, not a keeper... 28” minimum in MA. That one was 22, caught them up to 26. When the herring head back to sea in a week or two, the bigger fish should show. Still this was the second best fishing trip of the weekend.

Best trip was a hike to an old mill pond in the middle of a forest. My daughter baited, cast, hooked, landed, and released a bunch of sunfish on her own. Son still prefers to just reel in the fish.

Also saw lady slipper orchids on the hike. These would make Georgia O’Keefe blush.

Wild blueberries are about a month or two away.

    Pretty amazing day.

  2. Dropped to 210 after refeeding post fast. I’m thinking 1 week of fasting per month is a good mix.

Still mostly keto and 20/4 intermittent fasting. I don’t count or track carbs anymore when cooking or eating, but it’s pretty easy at this point. Meat and vegetables, staying away from refined seed oils, and lots of sparkling water.

    Keep it up everyone!

  3. Cheap or modern construction boots can be half-soled once or twice then done.  Traditionally made boots can be resoled and rebuilt practically forever.

Where on the modern/traditional spectrum would you put Tecovas?
  4. Was browsing the Cavender’s website. They have store brand boots. Some made by “Old Gringo” others made in Nocona.

Does anyone have experience with their house brand boots? Prices seem pretty reasonable.

  5. Cuero Ropers in cherry arrived last night. They were previously tried on with scuffed soles, but at $130, I let it slide. Interesting that they go on easier than Tecovas, but once on, have a tighter fit.

Overall, Tecovas are a better boot for me.

  6. "it's sketchy that they are sort of copying the look but they are different boots"
Isn't that RTIC's entire business plan? lol

Exactly, I think everyone knows what’s going on.

So props to my mom for not throwing out my old Star Wars and G I Joe toys from the 80s, along with my old comics.   My 6 year-old loves them.

But along with that, she kept some heavy totes that had a bunch of my old magazines (the girlie mags were disposed of at some point).  Among those were a solid collection of 80-90 Outdoor Life and Field and Stream from the 60s through the 80s (bought the 1960s and 70s ones at a garage sale for like a couple of bucks).

The magazines made their way to our place in Austin three months ago, unopened.  For some reason, I finally began looking through them earlier today, and couldn’t stop reading.

Looked up my favorite author.  Patrick F. McManus.  Best outdoor writer ever   His columns and books were right there with my Mad Scientists Club books

He passed away a year ago today.

A year ago to this very day

Shit   Did his ghost prompt me to start reading his stories again or something?

And with Red Green retiring this year (farewell tour and looking really old), I’m realizing that I’m getting old.  Well, Red Green show came a lot later - I was an adult when I started watching (and still do on YouTube).  But the part of me that enjoyed McManus enjoys the Red Green show.

Not sure where I was going with this, but my midlife-crisis isn’t going to be a tricked-out Subaru WRX, it’s going to be finding some land in New England with a decent-sized pond and woods and building a fishing lodge of sorts.

    McManus and Gierach are poets.

  8. I like and wear both styles as I think they both look/feel good. Those that care one way or another likely sit to pee.

This is a good answer. I prefer the look of round toes, and don’t have anything against square toes. Still, some of the extra wide toe boots look like Kevin Malone wearing tissue boxes.
  9. I have a tarsal boss on my feet. Not painful at all just a decent bump. So they may not be in the cards for me.

Maybe a thick stingray wingtip and on a leather vamp.

  10. Just tried on my suede cueros and they are very comfortable. They are slightly, very slightly larger than my Tecovas. I wear an 11D in both.

    Definitely worth the $150.
