  1. saw it second time last night. during the initial mission briefing some comment is made about why they can’t use the F22 but I missed it again. something about GPS? or maybe that was all it was.

Heard the F22 has a problem with its inverted flight tanks. Rumor has it the F22 can’t do a negative G push over.

  2. Chico's tacos in El Paso actually makes a pretty damn good burger, and it pretty much fits the bill (most locations have some indoor seating, but it's a taco/burger "stand" for sure).

And a pro move is to get the burger and fries....and a side order of 3 tacos.

Make sure and head to the west side and go to the Charcoaler. Double green chili burger.

I had to take a kid to school so I forgot to add a few things:

    • They want to see drive and performance against the curriculum available to the student.  All the admission officers said it looks far better to take 5 of 5 AP classes if that's all your high school offers than to take 20 of 25 at an elite high school.  So, all things being equal, a kid coming out of Del Valle will look better than a kid coming out of Westlake.  Why does the kid from Westlake get a spot though? The school's demographics show that kid's parents can cut a check for tuition in full.
    • Senior classes matter.  When an applicant is on the waitlist or has a decision pending, if they see a student takes an easy senior schedule, has off periods, etc., the elite schools will deny entry.  Admissions officers view your senior year is the best prep for your freshman year of college and they expect it to be your hardest year in high school.
    • Reference letters matter most when they're from teachers that didn't teach subjects you want to major in.  They like students with diverse interests who were also high performers in other subjects.
    • Most calculate a new GPA for each applicant. It's a core GPA with certain grades omitted based on your declared major.  For example, if you want to major in a STEM, they will look at your grades just in STEM classes + other core subjects like English, etc.  Art, music, PE, non-applicable electives, etc grades are dropped from the average.  Research has shown that this core GPA is the best indicator for the success of a new freshman student.
    • The SAT and ACT don't matter they way you think they do.  The tests are mostly a check against the validity of your GPA.  Test scores and GPA consistently line up with each other. If they don't something is up with that application.

Thank you for this and the post prior - It is such a different world then when I packed up and went to UT (the only school I applied to because I had a blast at Roundup that spring.. go figure) I have 3 within 2 to 4 years of entering college. I appreciate the insight.

When I was applying to college, my safety school was SC (no offense @USCATX).  But that was the reality back in the '80's.  I applied to 4 UC's and SC just in case, and I was a 3.4 GPA, 1250 SAT kid.  Now SC is one of the elite schools on the west coast (just ask them, they will be happy to go on and on about it).  The transformation of universities over the last 30 years is likely going to pale in comparison to what will happen over the next 30.

Shit, looking at those grades/SATs, I'd be headed to Pasadena City College if it was nowadays.

I think this has been answered before.. but why is it so different now - demographics in Texas is one .. maybe but nationwide... what is going on.

  5. Yeah, giving up all the friends you’ve made in your first two years and finishing up somewhere else would be difficult. Do you just suck it up and become that one weirdo junior that lives in a dorm to meet people? Maybe it’s different nowadays since kids are only friends online anyway.

I ran into a few people from high school at Texas. They transferred in from UTEP for Jr. Sr. Year. They would say they graduated from Texas. I call BS on that. Until you sat in a 300 plus student calculus class sweating the bell curve or chem class etc then it don’t count. When I went to UT they would spend the first two years trying to fail you out and many did. Freshman classes numbers would start at 10 and end with 5

That and get off my lawn!

I took a class or two over the summers between UT - The campus is really nice.. if you like Southwest architecture. Now.. would I spend 4 years there.. No.. I spent my childhood in that dump and left for Austin the day I graduated HS. Their geology department is supposed to be really good..that's all I got.

The handful of Tech grads I know are fucking grinders.  Every one of 'em in sales/biz dev/rainmaking and all of 'em get after it.  I could see that.

Also, to everybody remotely associated with Santa Barbara........fuck you.  I'm jealous and petty.

I can attest to this - Most of the young people we have are Tech grads (Software Sales and Biz Dev) - They are doing very well. When I ask them why they chose Tech since most of them graduated from the big city high schools like Highland Park, Memorial, Westlake - they said ... didn't get into UT.. no way was going to aTm so Tech it was.

Alright thread, give your Juarez recs. I’m planning to have lunch there tomorrow.

The most important question, how are the margaritas? Should I order a beer instead?

Get yourself a Fred's sandwich at Fred's Bar off the downtown bridge (C. Ignacio Mejía 369, Ciudad Juarez) ...Or any of the El Gato Taco carts on the street. Stop by the Kentucky Club and get a drink on Juarez Ave.
