So I actually pulled some data on this. Using Camp Mabry daily max temp records back to the 1930s, a high of 95 in early May is right at the 95th percentile.  So yes, I'd say it's pretty rare and not common.

Historical high temperature talk not going away.  Pretty rare going back 100 years, absolutely.  Pretty rare in these modern end-of-Earth Central Texas times?  Not really.  I went back just a few years and found the following:

    2023:  94 degrees April 15th (First 95 or above June 14th)

2022:  First 95 degree day occurred on April 4 (96*).  Interestingly, everyday from May4th to May 21st that year was between 92-101*

    2021:  94 degrees on May 4 (95* June 9th)

    2020:  95 degrees on April 8

2019:  95 degrees on June 7th (multiple 93s and 93s in April and May)

    2018:  97 degrees on May 15th

    2017:  95 degrees on April 28th

2016:  95 degrees on June 16th (best Austin summer since 2007)

Like, just as one example, Dismukes. I don’t get it. He’s been on a few years now and I don’t think I’ve laughed once at anything he’s done.

Now you’ve done it.  This post is a dog whistle for YGIFS and an inevitable seven paragraph post on the subject.

95 in early May is 10 degrees above average. I wouldn't say that's fairly common.  It does not bode well for this summer.

    I think it’s a more common than you’d imagine.

Not certain when the average 95° day occurs, but I know historically at least, the average first 90° day in Austin is late March/early April.

    Exactly.

This gives you a better idea of what "Sometimes Island" really is. And for perspective, that cliff on the left side of that ridge is the deepest point in the lake at about 185' when the lake was full.

Nice.  This and one other taken a month or two later during construction are my fave Travis pics.

The deepest part of the lake is actually just west of Starnes Island.  Well over 230’ when the lake is full.

So, my 9:00 flight from Dallas to Austin that boarded at 9:30. .. we are still sitting on the tarmac … in Dallas.

Assuming this is AA, they offered me $1200 to switch to this flight.  It was the first time I was actually tempted to do so but the thought of something just like this occurring seemed way to likely.

Didn’t really matter though as we departed nearly an hour late and then sat on the ground at ABIA afterward while the blizzard rolled in and they scrambled the de-icing trucks.

  6. It’s been a while but can we talk about the gypsie -I think this is okay to say?- situation in Austin?

For years, it was primarily just the family next to Whole Foods at Domain.  We all know them.  But within the past few months there are families anlmost everywhere.  Westlake, up and down Lamar, Barton Springs, Arboretum, NW Hills.  It’s like a never ending turf war.

Look, if you’re going to be homeless and ask for money, God bless you.  But, when you have your infant and school aged kids (who obviously are being kept out of school by mommy and daddy) do it on your behalf every.single.day while you sit nearby and play on your iPhone then we have problems.

I drove by Anderson high school Thursday about 3 pm in the afternoon and the band was outside practicing on the parking lot.  That’s got to be child abuse.

    LCHorn?  More like LCAnderson, amirite?

just a quick reminder that plenty of morons in this state are fond of the saying, “if you don’t like the weather in Texas, wait five minutes, it’ll change.”

The unspoken part of that saying is that in five minutes it will be even hotter.

My hope is that we'll have something to rival Eldorado but closer.

You do, it’s Y Mas down the road.  But it ain’t at Que Divino, at least not yet.  It’s to be expected at a new restaurant but they had A LOT of kinks to work out when we were there.  Some of the food items were very good, others were a heavy, greasy mess.

The poster above who mentioned “potential” is exactly correct.  Maybe after some time it will be where it needs to but I won’t be going back for at least several weeks.

That Friday's was Anderson High date night central when I was a kid.  Movie at the Arbor 4, then Amy's ice cream and "riding on the cows.

PF Changs or Dan Mclusky's was the go-to before AHS homecoming and prom.  The Arboretum cows or TCBY on Far West for the casual weekday date night, although the latter was a harder place to discreetly feel up your date.

Delucca has got their work cut out for them if they're going to remain.  Big space and even bigger rents + not open for lunch = uphill battle.

Brio, yes.  But I think Blue Baker was in the Old Dan McClusky's spot.

Correct.  Juliet was TGI Fridays for decades.

Estancia has been several things over the years including Bahama Breeze.

Still 3 weeks to go before we hit "peak summer." Kill me.

2nd week of August is historically when daily high temps start to sloooowly average down for most folks in Texas. But that's only like 1 degree every 10 days. Things don't really pick up much steam until mid to late September, when the average high starts dropping a degree roughly every 4 days.

+ rep this is a great map.  I had no idea temperature peaks vary as much as they do across the country.
