At least we don’t have to listen to Musberger.
I just have the skycam feed on via ESPN News. No commentary - it makes the score bearable.

I listened to a bit on the way home tonight. Was fun hearing them together again after all these years. If they could do that every day, The Downbeat/Freak might have something.I don’t think Greggo would be up to that and I worry it would fall apart quickly - but I think a weekly segment or two a la Joel Klatt (Fridays with Greggo or somesuch) could work well.

Nope. Might have been the only thing to save that podcast.
Eh, the second incarnation of the podcast (Your Dark Companion) was actually pretty good, and probably would still be going if he hadn't gone to The Freak.

Well, another round of illness and shitty weather have kept me off of all bikes since late October.
Went to Moss, which finally opened after the latest storms and it was muddy in that way that makes pedaling hard. Whew boy, that was a beating. I only did something like 2-3 miles and quit. My fitness is in the shitter after being pretty good from new bike day to Septemberish.
That sucks, and I've been there. I ended up doing a fair amount of (paved) trail riding when I was trying to come back after a month off due to Covid, and it really worked. I'm now trying to ride in to work (North Dallas to Uptown area) at least once a week, via WRC/SoPac/Ridgewood/Katy trails.

Gordo and Dan should counter program with Fake Greggo and replaying the David Kunkel White Elephant show.

Interesting couple of very frank segments just now about Greggo’s history with Rhyner. And tomorrow they’ll be on live together 3-7 - at a remote. That’s definitely one way to counterprogram White Elephant Day. 🍿
Edited to add that the show has been much more listenable with Danny in the mix, especially when they’re doing more sports and music now instead of strained lists and topic-wheel random banter. Sounds like they’re also introducing their own versions of E-News and CQH. Smart to make the show a little more clock/format-driven.

Kind of funny how they’re now trying to sing over Danny’s voice to kind of hide it on segment opens, ad spots, etc.

Be interesting to see what happens with WRR when they fully transition to non-commercial.
Since WRR is now all-Classical Christmas until Jan 1, that should help them in the ratings.

do they count streaming in the ratings.............
It varies. Some stations put their streams on a separate PPM encoder (which bakes a non-audible signal into the broadcast that the Nielsen people meters pick up), while others put both broadcast and stream on the same encoder so they're all counted together. You can tell the stations that encode separately on the ratings reports because the streams show up with "STR", as in "KTCK-STR". Based on the latest 12+ reports, Cumulus and IHeart have combined the reporting for their stations while Audacy has not. https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb024

Honestly, if they'd mix in more sports and get shows on a fixed rundown I think they'd be better off. I love hearing Rhyner in the afternoons but the endless parade of lists and random banter just isn't meaty enough.

You can say the exact same thing about baylor or any historically middle of the road or lower school. People love a success story. BC, Northwestern, wake forest, any of them. Remember, there is a reason why they are not mentioned when things are happening. Enjoy your day.
I don’t mean just this season. I mean over the past two decades.

No one gives a shit about TCU.
I realize We’re Surly and this is how we’re supposed to respond, but interest in the Frogs is definitely higher than it’s been. Ratings-wise, their games have done well nationally (https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-tv-ratings/), and their profile has risen - the school has seen record applications and giving, and they’re getting more publicity than ever. Winning works.

TCU is who we thought they were. They belong nowhere near the playoff. One loss Tennessee should get in over them. They would absolutely skull fuck this shitty squad led by scrub ass Max Doogan.
Baylor is as hyped as ever, at home, already showing multiple looks on the ground, with TCU struggling to stop the run, and it’s still 14-14? Yeah, bad take.
Are they NC material? Probably not. But not shitty and Duggan isn’t a “scrub ass”.

Going to see them in a couple of weeks. Nice to see some young’ungs helping to keep jazz alive
DOMi and JD Beck were just nominated for two Grammys, one for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, and even bigger, for Best New Artist. Cool to see that for some Texans (JD, anyway, who hails from Allen).
They also got the Tiny Desk treatment:

Came here to check that this was posted.
the PAC was "One Family Round Rock" and they got a LOT of out of state funding. They had signs and ads EVERYWHERE.
And "soundly defeated" doesn't quite capture it. They were fucking destroyed by anywhere from 20 to 28 percentage points.
Same thing up in Wylie as well - similar slate of far-right candidates with outside funding - and they were all soundly defeated, even in a relatively conservative community.

Finally made it down to Spider Mountain this weekend, and it definitely lives up to the hype. Given that I'm still on a hardtail, I mainly stuck to the greens; I tried all but one of the blues and made it down one of them without stopping, but had to walk certain points on the rest (and honestly, there's too many stairstep rocks to get any kind of speed on a hardtail without it being so rough that I almost lost grip on my handlebars a couple times). Overall, it provides some gorgeous Hill Country scenery, seems to be well run and has a decent bar on property with wood-fired pizzas and a solid beer selection. I also learned the lift is the old Lift 1 at Taos Ski Valley (replaced in 2018), which is pretty cool.
We topped off the day at Barrow Brewing in Salado before heading back to Dallas. Great day, and hope to do it again soon.

All those empty seats in the crowd shots of a 45K seat stadium....that is why you are 7th TCU.
It was full at end of 1st half, but they have those massive lounges under each side that fans disappear into and don’t leave. Sure, they’re really nice, but they don’t belong in a stadium. It’s stupid and detracts from what the experience is supposed to be.

Toads have injured six B12 QBs in their games this season:
blOU, kansas, okie lite, k-state (2), tech
That’s a tidy narrative, but it’s not entirely true. Sanders was already dealing with a shoulder injury going into the game versus TCU, as well as Martinez for Kansas State. Other than the Gabriel thing, most of those were pretty much injuries you’d expect in the flow of a physical game.

This feels like Musk, basically forced into the deal, is trying to (clumsily) execute a McKinsey-type strategic plan or hedge fund-style flip. Massively cut budget via extreme layoffs, develop new revenue streams to inflate value (like the check mark idiocy), make himself look good and then ultimately sell it at a profit. So far, it's not going so well.

CFP National Championship Game: #1 Georgia vs #3 TCU.

Because TCU was a solid team, won 13 games, almost won a 14th, and generally figured out how to get out of jams better than UT. Michigan couldn’t get out of their own way, and Georgia was utterly dominant at the line, had a size/speed advantage and did amazing scouting work to exploit the Frogs’ weaknesses. It’s not rocket science.
