It will come down to our OL play. If they can give Ewers some time to throw, we will have a chance. If the OL plays like how they played last year against Arky, I am afraid Ewers will get flustered, and it will go downhill fast like Fat Ketch rolling down a hill. Have to protect the QB, which I believe we are capable of doing if the team believes in themselves.

We do not have the same O Line as we did last year. As a smart poster on another site said....This aint Ground Hog Day...

How in the goddamned living fuck can anyone post on this site that they'd rather have Derrick Henry at RB than Ricky Williams or Earl Campbell? That's fucking inexcusable.

how in the goddamned hell can anybody post on this site that they would rather have Will Anderson on defense than Tommy Nobis?

    Bogus list!

This is where I’m at. All I’ve ever heard about Ewers is that he’s the answer. “HE’S ONE OF THREE PERFECTLY RATED PROSPECTS RAWRR.” I’ve seen nothing from him that says he’s elite. This isn’t SLC vs. Duncanville. He couldn’t separate in camp, looks like he’s never seen a collge strength and conditioning program, and has simply shown me nothing to believe we ought to pin all our hopes to this guy.

I hope like hell he is elite. But it’s a cautious optimism, or perhaps a cautious pessimism.

this is where I am at....For a true freshman in his first start ever that effectively uses a pump fake, and can check down his recievers to get the ball to his TE for a TD???? There are senior QBS starting right now that can not do all that. I would suggest taking some training in getting a perspective.

  4. I thought Ewers had a very good game. For a freshman I thought he had fabulous game. For a freshman that has never thrown a pass in a college game I thought he was amazingly good. What I dont understand  is how high some of these posters have set the bar for him. What in hell did they expect?

Add to that , he is playing behind an O line that had 2 freshmen. Damn!.....I cant wait. Our offense has a chance to just get better and better with experience. Hell by end of season we might even be able to give Kansas a game....

Whoa The two statues at the stadium think you might ought to tap the brakes on that.

Awww....l know full well it is impossible to be better than Earl, I am just saying it is a damned shame we will never get a chance to see how good Bijan really is. I hope he shows us this year what we left on the table

Surprised that this kid is not getting it together on his 2nd chance -- still hoping Coach Marion somehow gets Agiye to play well this year  🙏🙏🙏

I am hoping Big 12 refs give us a fair call this year, but I don't expect that either.

Man I can't wait till the season starts so we can all have a huge meltdown over the first play from scrimmage being an incompletion!

Jesus immamac.....looks to me like we are already having a meltdown and we havn't even had a scrimmage yet, much less a play....

Looking back on it, I think (relative to peers) the 2021 Longhorns were the least talented since 1992 (Mackovic’s first year). The NFL wanted none of our draftable players. Phil Steele rates draftable players for the upcoming season, and the only ones of note are Robinson and Johnson (#1 and 25 at RB). Yes, Coburn, Overshown and Jamison are all listed, and he has also named scores of other players around the country that project higher.
It doesn’t make sense, because we had several years of highly rated recruiting classes; you’d think some would have to pan out. It’s as if Herman’s recruiting system was able to zero in on and attract the less motivated 4 star players.
5-7 sucked last year and losing to Kansas sucked. We can rightfully bitch about the defensive schemes. I still think a roster overhaul is the main need. We are fortunate that roster overhauls can happen faster in 2022 than 1992.
I voted 8 wins, because I am an optimist.

Herman attracted the less motivated 4star guys because they all got the wrong idea why they were coming here. That could have been corrected, but he kept kissing the players.

I was just speaking to Sark having to balance fan expectations, NIL bigwigs who helped get QE here, player expectations, and, ultimately, what is best for the team.  I guess I'm saying there's a lot of extraneous aspects to the decision.

My hope and expectation is that Sark does not give one whit of a second thinking on fan expectations,NIL bigwigs, or any of that crap. I want him to KNOW who to start, and start him no matter who says anything about it. Like Sark or not, he is who we have guiding the ship so he has no choice but to be right.......and God help us all.....

Hell, Davy Crockett said...."make sure you are right and then go ahead"....maybe this is like when St. DKR was facing 4th and 3 with his legacy and a National title on the line going for a cursed forward pass!

You keep harping on the 2-4 when it’s the exact same as a 4-2. PK usually runs a guy about 245-250 on the weak side and a guy around 260-265 on the strong side. That’s plenty big when he has the right guys and it functions almost identically to a 4-2. Our problem last year was DL who were bad at 2-gapping and horrible edge personnel, especially after Jones got hurt.

If you want to focus on a scheme failing from last year, it would be the catch and release 2 gapping when we had DL who couldn’t execute it and bad linebackers behind them , not the use of a 2-4, which is a distinction without a difference from a 4-2.

This is also completely wrong. PK ran a 3-3 sometimes, but his base 2-4 does not function as a 3-3. It’s 2 DTs, 2 edges, and 2 ILBs. We always had 2 ILBs on the field. That’s not a 3-3 in function or in personnel.

Gee whiz Burt.....you dont actually think anyone on Surly has a clue about any of this do you?.....I think you could have written your reply in Mandarin  and the understanding would have been the same....

I mean- the rumor out of camp last year was that the WR room was terrible the OLine sucked, QB had no separation and the only part of the team that might be a strength was the DLine (whoops). There was talk (that most didn’t believe) that the coaching staff was telling everyone who would listen that Alabamas second team was way more talented than our starters and it was going to be a rough year.
I haven’t heard anything remotely as concerning coming out as last year except that it feels like we will not get to the QB because we are not good at edge. We also missed out on that at the portal (the only position group we didn’t upgrade through the portal- other then RB which was so stacked why bother) and we don’t seem like we are killing it there on the recruiting front.  You can’t be a great team if you can’t get to the QB. So, hopefully that changes at some point in time.

great post. The only issue I have with this is that it is hard to compare last years attitude in camp with this years when we have yet to be at camp.....

I would rather see us talk about how we are better than last year when we actually are in camp.

You get props from me for pointing out that this is not the same as we hear every year, when last year we were seeing lots of bad stuff that came to pass.....good catch...

  13. I aint giving PK a pass, but last year he came in on short notice and not only didnt know his players, he didnt know his coaches either. If he was a newby or untested I would be damned worried, but he came here with a great resume. I hope to hell he has it figured out now. I hope to hell Coburn and Sweat got their fat asses into condition and can play most of a game this year.

Frankly, what worries me the most is having to pin all our hopes on a 19 year old that has all the talent, but none of the seasoning. It almost isnt fair, but that is where we are. Manning will have it way easier in comparison when he gets his shot. If our defense and running game can take a bit of pressure off of him, we might be pretty good. If they cannot.....well.....we suck until we dont...
