Agreed, thinking back on it, if it weren’t for reading his stuff, I probably wouldn’t have gone on and read Dobie or Elmer Kelton or any of that stuff.  He made me read James Michener!  This is what happens, Larry!

I almost wish I hadn’t stumbled onto this thread. What a gut punch.

Don’t want to derail, but my pharmacy in Crane has a huge mural dedicated to Paul Patterson (one of Elmer Kelton’s students I think) on one of the walls. It’s faded in parts and I am working with a local artist to restore it.

@4HEany suggestions on a place to get a 2nd Moderno shot. I can’t make my original 3/14 appointment at CVS and rescheduling has been impossible so far. I’m in Dallas and I’m willing to drive a couple of hours. I’m also probably going to be in the Odessa area at the end of next week or the week after.

They are having a drive-thru clinic in Andrews on Saturday March 20th. I’ll have to check on vaccine type on that one.
Medical Center Hospital in Odessa just moved their operations from Ratliff stadium to their clinics. They mostly have Pfizer but I’ll check with the ceo to see if they have any moderna for you.
The Andrews County Health Department has been getting Moderna only so I’ll reach out to that director to see if I can get you a dose.

I'm about to tell my friends to take a spring break trip to Odessa next week.  There are consistently shots available there.

You should tell them do it now. A local hospital ceo called me yesterday to see if I wanted some of their vaccine transferred to my store. I couldn’t take any this week because I’m short staffed and could only handle the 100 we are allocated comfortably.

But there is plenty of vaccine to be had here.

Keep checking the HEB site.  I got my spot about 3:45 yesterday (for tomorrow), and I remember they had lots of stores at that time that had openings, like a slot machine, just gotta keep pulling the handle.

ETA: CVS does as well, although they mainly seem to have spots in West Texas,  WTF is it with that area?  As you said, they don't want it, send it down here

It’s not that we don’t want it out here in west Texas. We’ve got proportionally a higher percentage vaccinated. We are above 33% in our county. When you consider that 50% of the population won’t take it, we are simply running out of arms to put it in.

My wife and I have been trying to figure out how we feel about just pulling out the stops to get vaxxed, but we're both young, healthy, and not 1a/b. Guess that's what we get for living healthy and not smoking.

How'd y'all get doses lined up? Did y'all have to lie about 1a/b?

Come to our county. Our health department director has basically said just get the damned things in arms. Any arms.
We are probably at 33% vaccinated in our county. All high risk groups have been given if they want it. And with ~50% not going to take the vaccine we are going to be running out of arms soon.

If I get an allocation next week anyone on Surly that wants one can get it from me. Probably a huge drive for most, but you’ll get your shot.

Even if it’s not “your turn” I don’t know anyone that’s questioning medical conditions. I sure as fuck am not.

I know there is a thread for this, but if any of you oil barons are in Midland/West Texas ... we have power/water/heat/internet (so far) and I'm happy to help.  I know many here in Midland have been without those basics for a while now.

Same here. I have 4 wheel drive and can come get anyone who is stuck. We have power, water, and willing to help anyone in dire straights.

I am pretty sure they are getting rid of their shots.  I don't think they have enough allocation to service the area at the same rate that other areas of Texas are getting shots.

Ah. If that’s the case the Travis county reps need to lean on DSHS like every other state politician is doing.

    Some milestones:

    • Over 1/8th of Texans over 16 have had a first shot
    • About 1/3rd of Texans over 65 have had a first shot

Senior Texans are still tracking to be 50% first shots around March 6th and 100% first shots around May 1st.  They are still getting about half the vaccine statewide.  It will be interesting to see at what point the senior curve starts to flatten; so far it's a straight line.

The date for Texans over 16 has pulled in a bit, now June 18th for 50% first shots and Dec 1st for 100% first shots.

Travis Co is not doing as well as the statewide numbers.  Seniors are getting a lower share of vaccine and Travis Co is overall about a week behind the state averages.  Travis Co has fallen a week behind in a month of giving shots, so the 50% and 100% numbers are pushing way out.  Travis Co could use additional allocations, either more to UT (Dell Med) or an additional vaccination site for APH, or give vax to local pharmacies.

Fuck that. If Travis county isn’t getting them into arms then they don’t deserve more allocation. Give that shit to people who are handling their business.

I believe this is why "The Pacific" isn't as highly regarded as "Band of Brothers".  BOB had better and more likeable characters (the closest Pacific could muster is John Basilone).  Warfare in the Pacific was such a meat grinder. D-Day and Bastogne seem to merge on Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo, Okinawa, and dozens of other atolls. Month after month. Again and again. The Pacific seemed like a 10-part series of hell on Earth.

I’m finishing reading “With the Old Breed”. The only book I’ve read that causes the hair on the back of my neck to stand up as it’s being told. It’s no misnomer that they are called the greatest generation. Good Lord I can’t even imagine myself in their shoes... Frankly, I don’t even want to.

Back in the 80's my history teacher was from Jayton. We were all family friends since he was one of our closest neighbors, and we went out to see his mother that still lived there. Jayton had dropped down from 11-man and was ripping all of us other 6-man teams a new asshole. Never had seen anything like it. It wasn't very common back then, at least not in our neck of the woods.

Cool shit we did back then at a small school that you couldn't do at a big school, and the teacher would get arrested for today, at any school:

Our coach was our chemistry teacher, our only high school coach. He had taken chemistry in college, so, therefore it was decided he would be our chemistry teacher. We were all learning at the same time, he basically taught "science" at our school. We had a small stock tank behind our bus shed (all three buses, and two of them were short) that caught a few feet of water after a rain. Apparently, chemistry had been taught at our school before, because we climbed down in the basement, and found container after container of pure elements. So we devised this grand plan to punch holes in the lids and throw them into this stock tank and see how they react. Sulfur, cobalt, graphite, etc., and we had a big container of sodium. We didn't notice him slip in behind the bus barn when we threw in the sodium. We threw it in and watched it bubble. It was probably about two pounds, and when it went off it covered the five of us students with the most stinky vile mud you could imagine. So bad, we all had to go home and change clothes. He laughed his ass off, and had brought a bag of trash bags for us to cover our seats. We did shit like that on Mon-Wed-Fri. We limited out on dove in the field next to the school on Tue-Thu., everyone kept their shotgun in the truck.

Speaking of the short bus. The school bought a new short bus, mainly for long distance FFA field trips my sophomore year. It was a Dodge, with a 440. We were too small to have an automotive shop, but we had a lot of motor heads. Our Ag teacher, out of his own pocket, bought an aluminum intake, and an 850 cfm carb to put on that bitch. Apparently, the governor was the throttle stop on the original carb. That thing was pretty respectable, we got pulled over for over 80 in Waller County going to the Houston Livestock Show. I thought they were gonna take our Ag teacher to jail, back then the speed limit was still 55.

Finally, as you can imagine, small schools have shit for electives. Well, the above history teacher was a pilot, his FIL had retired from AmAirlines, they had an airstrip on their place. Aviation was an elective, it's how I got my pilot's license, the first ever at my school. There were 3 of us in the class that year, he had an aerobatics license, and a four-seater was perfect for "field trips". We would do hammerheads (tail slides back then), stick everyone's cap to the roof of the plane, float matchboxes, just fun shit for an hour.

Growing up rural was fun as fuck. We were too small to have city cops and the sheriff's department never got called. I miss that.

I remember when the Jaybirds dropped down to 6-man. They wreaked some f’n havoc in football at the time.

I graduated with a class of 10. I was Salutatorian, and wasn't even top 10% of my class. The Valedictorian never took a harder math class than Algebra I. So today, he would be an auto-admission to UT. Unfortunate for me I would not.

    CHIEF

Class of 16 here and I was salutatorian as well. My parents were both public educators so we lived on school provided housing on campus. 6 man football for the MF’n win. My Dad was principal at the school so we had our run of the place. Basketball gym, football field, tennis courts, wood shop, and everything else.

My Dad beat my ass good one time when our summer football game ran past dark and we turned the stadium lights on so we could finish.

Has there been waterflood response yet? Just a 2 min look at the rrc website looks like they drilled a well in 17 and production has declined since.

Just me but their website screams run away.

There has been an uptick on production. That has been especially true on the 2 wells where they have recently done an acid clean out. I think I’ll stand pat and let them take me to Missouri before I even consider investing anymore with them.

  13. Thanks for the input guys. I’m particularly interested to hear that y’all haven’t had good experiences with water flood projects. Interestingly enough they are touting that it’s cheaper than primary production and thus can be profitable even when oil prices are in the tank.

I think I’ll stick to Ameros for 2021.

  14. So I’ve invested in some working interest on a secondary recovery (water flood) project over the last couple years. The project is in Madison county.  My previous experience with working interest is that the tax benefits are great, but you usually get operated to death.

Recovery seems to be going up and the operator is telling me that we are “turning the corner” and the field is almost saturated.  Anyone have any experience with water flood projects?  Just curious if it’s worth throwing some more money at this year or not.
