Wasn’t there supposed to be some new category this year, like “best popular movie” or some such?

Yea but the scrapped it after some backlash immediately after announcing it.

I think this is the only time I have only seen 1 of the best picture nominees. Thats pretty crazy to me. *shrug

I guess I could be one of the lucky ones.  I've completely stuck to the no-to-low-carb thing thus far without any problems - except for the insomnia.  Sunday morning was my last real carb meal.  I've eaten nothing but beef jerky, fajita meat, chili, cheese, celery, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and those instant egg/sausage cups.  Oddly, when I got home yesterday, the keto strip tested almost nothing.  In testing it again tonight, it's further to the right than it was 3 days ago.

Another odd thing is that I'm not really craving any foods.  Sure, if I could get away with it, I'd eat a Whataburger or pizza, but I honestly don't even think about or consider it.  I figured I'd have much worse cravings than I do.  I am getting a tad tired of the aforementioned foods; however, I should be good just adding variety without breaking the deal.

One last thing.  I did a pretty strenuous bike ride this afternoon.  For the first 5 miles, I was really suffering.  After that, I felt fine other than I was far more thirsty than normal.  I was only out for an hour, but I didn't feel any real fatigue.

Whataburger is super accomodating with obnoxious Keto orders. I regularly get a double or triple meat w/cheese and no bun. Toss some bacon on that bad boy and you got yourself a nice keto meal. They serve it in one of their salad trays with lettuce and tomato etc all the normal addons. Makes like a nice burger salad.

Ran 5K for the first time without stopping yesterday. Slow pace, about 5MPH but the goal is to get that in the sub 30s in not too long. GF wants to sign up for a real race but she's a bit behind me and I don't want it to be a miserable experience for her.

After having 10" or so removed from my colon last year I've been a bit concerned about lower GI health and diet. Keep me posted on how you shit on Keto.

Anybody else get a bit more constipated/harder shits than before?

It is much easier to become dehydrated while on a ketogenic diet since you don't retain as much water. I have personally also experienced this as well, so make sure you are drinking your water! Prior to starting on keto I had significant gastro issues with chronic IBS. Stomach issues have significantly recessed after changing my diet. I used to think it was due to lactose but I am eating tons of cheese these days and don't notice a problem.

  4. Dropped about 40 pounds last year but stalled out in July and just maintained right around 200 since then.

I'm hoping to get down to 180 this year. GF wants to train for a 5K, so hopefully the additional cardio will help.

Diet has been Keto but lots of cheat weekends that I need to stop. May eliminate breakfast as well to add in some intermittent fasting.

That's kinda where I'm at. The only thing I can think of that I MIGHT want to collect data on is my heartrate and knowing if I had it in the target zone and for how long. That's about it. Do they even do that?

They do. I enjoy having mine. You should be aware that the HR monitoring is not particularly accurate. I have the fitbit charge 2 and it can take quite a while to get to my actual heartrate.

The real benefit comes if you are motivated by metrics and as a reminder of how (in)active you've been over a certain time frame. I love seeing the graphs and charts. There have been countless days that I've noticed that I haven't moved much this week so I've gone out of my way to make sure I have active weekends.

But basically yes, it is a pedometer. It counts how many steps you've taken. The heart-rate monitoring and sleep tracking is neat though.

I'm not a gamer, but my nephew, 15 yo, is looking at building a machine and asked for some advise.  This may be a really dumb question, but is Windows 10 the OS of choice these days for gaming machines?

    Yup.

  7. Anyone buy Smash Ultimate? I played N64 smash a ton back in my childhood and this is the first one I've played for any decent period of time since then.

I'm having a good time! So many characters though it can be overwhelming. Right now I've unlocked about 51 in total.

I haven't played online yet, still trying to learn moves and find a few characters I enjoy. I tried out Simon for a while but now have been playing lots of Roy and that is going much better.

Some of the challengers to unlock are pretty obnoxious/difficult. So are some of the fights in the adventure mode.

Try working in scheduled walk breaks.  Run 10 minutes / walk 1 minute.  I found it keeps the legs fresher longer and that my overall time is better than trying to run straight through.  Especially helpful for full and half marathons, but I do in during any training run or race.

So I have done couch to 5k on and off and this is the method they go with until you get to the point where you just do 20, 25, 30 minute nonstop intervals. Do you still recommend that? I'm just on a treadmill so my pace is pretty constant at about 5.5 MPH when I'm actually jogging. Should I consider jogging at a faster pace and taking the run breaks or keep doing the slower, longer runs to get my cardio up?

I FINALLY made it into the gym and got checked out on all the neat toys they have. Hitting the keto hard to close out the year. Month and a half gents, let's kick its ass.

Keep it up! Thats great that you are getting into the gym.

GF wants to run a 5K, so I've started running a bit. It is amazing how losing a bit of weight makes running so much easier. Still can't run 5K without stopping at even a slow pace but I am able to go 25-30 minutes nonstop. Hopefully I'll be there soon.

  10. The Beto phone-bankers and door-knockers are literally just helping people find early voting/election day locations and trying to help them prepare a plan to vote. They aren't trying to convince people to vote for a candidate over the other. Seems like a pretty ridiculously thing to get butthurt about

Here's what I wonder.  "Don't turn Texas into California!!!!"

What the fuck does that mean?  Does it mean DON'T have Texas jump from being ranked 13th, all the way up to 8th (where California is) in per capita GDP?  Wait, maybe it means DON'T have Texas jump from being the 10th ranked economy up to California's 4th ranked economy?  Or should we not aspire to California's higher per capita income?

It's just a fucking empty threat/platitude without the fucking data behind it.

So, OF COURSE it's the dominant theme in Texas politics.

The Texas "economic miracle" depends on one thing -- high-priced oil.  When we have it, we look great. When we don't, we start to look shitty.  You know who that makes us similar to?  Venezuela.

Brisket, everyone knows that California is full of hippies and fruits. And I'm sure they put beans in their chili.

  12. I bought something off eBay for over $500 that was shipped USPS. They delivered it to the wrong address and the package disappeared. Fuck em.

Fortunately eBay reimbursed me after an obnoxious appeal process.

Never going to let something valuable be shipped USPS to me again.

  13. My apartment complex recently purchased a Peloton bike for our gym. I love it! The classes are high quality and challenging with different types of classes available. They are paced based on cadence and resistance which is calculated directly by the bike, so when you use the app you don't get that feedback which would take a lot of the value out of the classes in my opinion.

They sure as hell aren't cheap though and some people apparently fuck with the calibration so the leaderboards are all over the place if you are trying to use that as competitive motivation.

  14. So last night I was sat down by the GF as she was concerned about my alcohol consumption. This is the second time we've had a conversation about this and after the first I substantially changed my drinking habits. Previously I was drinking a whole 1.75L bottle of liquor per week. I significantly stopped that by reducing the amount of times that have a drink during the weekdays, now my consumption is about a 750mL bottle per week. I am drinking a bit on the weekdays again now and this equates to about 2-4 drinks 5 nights a week and usually over the course of 3-5 hours per night.

My girlfriend is what I would classify as not a drinker, she rarely will have more than a glass of wine a couple of times a week. She has expressed concerns about alcohol use due to behavior she has witnessed by her mother as she was growing up.

I have a different background, both of my parents drink, everyone in my family did the greek system in college, and I am often traveling for work with sales and customers which results in often entertaining each other with alcohol during and after dinners. My mother has been to rehab for alcohol and mental health issues and during these stints I have participated in family counseling sessions and am very aware of the destruction that can occur due to substance abuse.

My girlfriend's concerns are that my regular drinking is the start of a downward spiral that will eventually result in health issues, liver failure, cancer, etc. I have no history of destructive behavior towards her or any close people when I drink and she has agreed with that statement. I have only been shitfaced drunk around her a few times in the past 1.5 years.

She has concerns that I am using alcohol to boost my spirits and gets upset that when I come home with booze that I generally am in a better mood than on nights that I know I will not be drinking. I said that this was because I enjoy having a couple of drinks and I find it enjoyable and relaxing. I am not missing work or not keeping up with any obligations with this quantity that I am consuming. Generally I will drink while playing video games creating music or watching a movie.

I don't really know how to feel. I don't personally believe that my drinking is a problem or is particularly extreme, yet I am being confronted and clearly am offending her by participating in this. I do feel sort of judged by someone who is very straight-laced. She doesn't approve of really any vices.

I am trying to stay low carb so I am drinking liquor rather than beers, and I feel like this exacerbates the negative perception.

Am I in denial about how extreme my drinking is? I am surprised that I am being confronted after significantly reducing my consumption by so much and when there is no destructive behavior also being included with it.
