This was the first time I've seen Aaron-Taylor Johnson since the rumors of him being the next Bond. Doesn't give me comfort

    Same.

The least believable part of this movie was that Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the movie star and Gosling was the faceless background guy.

Just saw it at the Katy/Cinco Ranch Drafthouse and had a great time! Very fun movie, and my wife and I loved the new Drafthouse Baby Day promotion to have infant-welcome screenings on Tuesday before 2

They've been doing these in Austin for a while - I remember seeing Stepbrothers in the theater when my oldest was a baby and he's about to turn 16. But yeah, it's a great idea.

This was one of the most fun movies I've ever seen. My son and I both loved it, and yes, I made him listen to me belt out Against All Odds on the way home. Definitely worth seeing in a theater if you can. The Drafthouses in Austin still have a ton of showtimes.

I will defer to you on her as I can tell you zero about her work. A guy I work with did a nice breakdown of the movie for me because I do not really read reviews ahead of time. I would have it listed as a drama and not a horror movie, at least in the traditional sense of what watching a horror movie means.

The focus on the trans experience is why I believe there will be a personal connection to the movie that will resonate better with others who watch it. I believe movies like these have an important place in cinema even if they are not movies that everyone can connect with. I would say to perhaps stream it when it comes out and see what you think of it and not what others feel about this one.

I would've categorized her first movie the same way. I didn't know she was trans until this movie came out and it does shine a light on some of the storytelling aspects of World's Fair, but I still wouldn't watch it again. I'll take your advice about streaming TV Glow.

She kinda reminds me of older actress Julia Campbell.

Wow, you're right. I had to look her up to make sure they weren't related.

I Saw the TV Glow. Watched it last night. I am certain it will resonate better with other folks. It was a one time watch movie for me.

The trailer looks great, but I thought Jane Schoenbrun's other movie, We're All Going to the World's Fair, was one of the most boring things I've ever seen. It had a super high rating on RT and I usually agree with the critics so I'm a little wary of this one, but I'll probably catch it on streaming.

hailee steinfeld blew me away in true grit and then i haven’t heard of her since then (i don’t really watch movies tbf). what happened to her?

Put her pop career first. Did the Pitch Perfect sequels and some other lesser-known stuff, like Dickinson.

    Olivia Cooke.

Good call. She had a small part in Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl that she knocked out of the park, well before her House of the Dragon days.

I submit Zendaya. Reminds me of Jesse Plemons how she nails every (very versatile) role she's ever taken in her post- pop-TV time.

Saw this a few weeks ago as well and really liked it. I’m not a big horror fan, but I like those dudes that directed it, so I went. They did the last two Screams, which I enjoyed and Ready Or Not, which is a movie I love and watch when I catch it on TV.

I heard someone say they wished they could have kept the vampire reveal out of the marketing and it would have been so much cooler, but may have been harder to get asses in the seats.

It was extremely entertaining. And the funny parts were actually funny instead of just cringe, which is a rarity these days. One of the better movies I've seen recently.

We really enjoyed it, too. Kathryn Newton is turning into quite the indie horror actress moving into mainstream. And I agree that keeping the vampire reveal out of the theaters would've made the reveal that much more interesting, but I can see how it would make marketing difficult.

On a tangential note, and one about a movie I haven't seen yet, but one I plan to see when I can: I read an interview with Yorgos Lanthimos about his latest movie that debuted at Cannes, and it starts with the interviewer saying "you mentioned Caligula as an inspiration for this", so that should be a fucked-up ride even for YL.

Subscribe to Shudder. Definitely worth the 5.99$.

Cannot echo this enough. And they are starting to produce some great original content, like Late Night With the Devil and You'll Never Find Me.

Wife and I saw this and it was damn good. Yeah, it's propaganda and all that shit, but I love that they didn't pick a side and now people are up in arms about it instead of understanding it's shot through the eyes of the reporters.

Jesse Plemmons character was unsettling, which was a major bonus.

He's in it for all of 15 minutes and steals the show. As is typical for Jesse Plemons.

  8. Just got back from the theater and wow. My son and I both thought it was amazing, but I don't think the trailer gives you a good idea of the movie itself, which is much more bleak.

My degree is in journalism and this movie had me thinking about the photo from the Sudan in 1993 of the child and the vulture. The photographer, Kevin Carter, won the Pulitzer for it and took his own life a few months later. It re-ignited the whole debate about objectivity in journalism and what the role of journalists is in volatile situations. Are they just there to document and record, or do they step in and try to help? My stance has always been that we are humans first and that journalism, as necessary as it is to a free state, is a job and comes second to helping people. I will grant that that is an idealistic position and I've never been a war reporter. I'll spoiler the next part.

    Spoiler

Civil War does a great job of straddling that line, but at the end I think it lands on the side of "humans first", with Lee sacrificing herself to save Jessie. Jessie will turn into Lee (but will die younger), but by the time she's Lee's age, there won't be any remnants of when the 50 states were united. It'll be full-on dystopia. And by that point, everyone will be in survival mode and modern ethics will be a relic. There'll be no need to debate this topic because it will be irrelevant.

War renders all of this irrelevant. We all return to our base elements when we're knocked down several rungs in Maslow's hierarchy. Kirsten Dunst is fantastic at portraying someone who was raised in a world vastly different than the one she ends up living in. I hope she gets some recognition come awards season.

Abigail. Not as good as Ready or Not but definitely worth seeing. Agreed with others they messed up giving it away in the trailer. That kid (also in Matilda) is a little badass. She killed it.

Ha, I had the exact same thought about it re the comparison to Ready or Not. We definitely still enjoyed it, though.

Have you seen the latest Ryan Gosling one?

Oh yeah, this one's amazing. I think it's the longest break I've ever seen. Poor Heidi Gardner kept apologizing the next day but it's so damn funny.

Yeah that series was great. Only watched the first new one and to me it came across as a bit forced and scripted.

This is how I felt, too. It's not bad but Conan Without Borders seems a lot more genuine. The Haiti episode is awesome and reminds me of the No Reservations Beirut episode.

  12. Some of it's gross and some of it's gorgeous. Ooty is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The city roads can be terrifying - somewhere I have a video from when my coworker and I took an auto-rickshaw through the streets of Bangalore and ever time I watch it I just hear circus music playing in my head. And re: the weather, Bangalore's weather in the summer is shockingly wonderful. I was there for two weeks in July and the highest it got was 80 F.

That said, I haven't been to Delhi but I have an American friend who lived there for a long time with her Indian husband and yeah, it doesn't sound like somewhere I'd want to live, between the weather and now dumpster fires.
