  1. I'm not saying Dwyane Wade is better than Kobe. Kobe obviously had a better career. I'm just saying I would probably rather PLAY with prime Wade.

Here are the stats from both of their best years (in PTS, PER, WS and VORP).  Both at 27 yrs old.

    • Wade ('08) - 30.2 PTS, 7.5 AST, 5.0 TRB, 1.3 BLK, 2.2 STL, 56.2 TS%, 51.6 eFG%, 9.6 VORP, 14.7 WS, 0.232 WS/48, 30.4 PER
    • Kobe ('06) - 35.4 PTS, 4.5 AST, 5.3 TRB, 0.4 BLK, 1.8 STL, 55.9 TS%, 49.1 eFG%, 8.0 VORP, 15.3 WS, 0.224 WS/48, 28.0 PER

Tell me any of you would honestly rather play with Kobe from these years.  Wade was more efficient, had more assists, played better defense, more steals, more blocks, better WS/48, better PER, better just about everything.  And he did it all while involving his teammates to a much greater degree.

If there is another Kobe year that was better than Wade in 2008, go ahead and post it.

  2. Wade also made an All Defense team 3 times. He got a ton of blocks for a guard and actually ranks top 30 in career blocks.

I’ll take prime Wade and career Wade all day every day. I’m not actually sure I would pick prime Kobe over prime Wade if I was on a playground. Wade was a better teammate and would be much more fun to play with.

Maybe having them in the 40s is too high, but they aren't going to suck IMO.  They haven't played together, but overall their roster will be one of the most experienced in the country.  Just about everyone is a senior or 5th yr senior.  They also have a couple of potential all-conference type players in Edwards and Battle.  They still could sign another player or two.

  4. Here is what the schedule might look like, along with where I think teams will land in the preseason rankings:

    • KU - 1 - Away
    • UH - 6 - Home & Away
    • UT - 17
    • BU - 18 - Home & Away
    • TCU - 23  - Away
    • KSU - 30 - Home
    • ISU - 37 - Home
    • CINC - 38 - Away
    • OU - 40 - Home & Away
    • TT - 42  - Home & Away
    • WV - 44 - Home & Away
    • OSU - 48 - Home
    • UCF - 68 - Home
    • BYU - 70 - Away
  5. Team 3 defense is pretty bad.  Magic (28), Dirk (38) and Jokic (35) have never sniffed an All-Defense team (best All-Defense award shares in parentheses).  Jordan is obviously a great defender and Giannis has a DOPY award, but overall this is pretty weak defensive squad.  Compare this to Team 1 which has the following all-defense shares in their prime:  CP3 (3), Kobe (1), Durant (14), Garnett (DPoY), Kareem (2)

And thinking back, there were some great matchups between Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson.  Zeke definitely held his own against Magic, and CP3 is probably a better all-around player than Zeke - especially on defense.  CP3 isn't going to get bullied around by Magic on defense.  He would lose the matchup, but it wouldn't be as lop sided as I thought initially.

  6. We should do it again. The game has changed a lot over the last 5 years.

Regarding the four teams above, team 1 could be pretty solid.  Great perimeter shooting from KD, Kobe and CP3.  Unstoppable interior offense from Kareem.  Great perimeter defense from CP3 and Kobe. Great interior defense from Garnett and Kareem.

Prime Kobe would not be a cakewalk for Jordan on either end of the court.  And prime KD is a significantly better, more versatile player than Giannis.  Dirk and KG are basically a wash.  Prime Kareem is better than Jokic on both ends of the court. The only real advantage for Team 3 is Magic over CP3.

Team 2 is a terribly constructed team.  No shooting.  They would get destroyed.  LeBron and Stockton eventually learned to shoot the 3, but they weren't good at all in their prime - and I assume that is when you would get them.

which goes to show how important team fit and team chemistry are. carr didn't shine until he was surrounded by the right guys and given the right role, plus an extra year of playing with them. and jabari basically had as good of a season as he possibly could have last year. i don't think there was another team in cbb where he would have been a better fit. the guys and system around you make such a huge difference for non-star players.

I can mostly agree with that.  I thought Carr was pretty good the previous year too though. I still think that team could have made a decent run in the tourney.

Matchups are also important and we ran into a terrible opponent against Purdue the year before in the tourney.  And "how" a game is called can also make a big difference, even if the game is called evenly.

Basically a lot of luck is involved to win a title in basketball.  But if you keep putting out a top-10 team year after year, you will finally get one (or more).

  8. If anyone needs a new travel card, the Chase Ink business has a big points bonus right now (100K).  And the referrals are crazy high (40K).  If anybody is planning to get one, let me know and I'll send a referral link.

And if you already have one, a good plan is to send your SPOUSE a referral link.  Then they get an independent card and 100K bonus and you get the 40K.

Yeah the price has gone up a lot over the years.  It used to only be worth ~$2,500 and was one of the least expensive resale Rolexes.  I don't think I could ever sell it, even though I don't love that it is a quartz.

It has some dings in it that I will also never buff out.  Whenever I see them I think about what my granddad (a farmer) was doing when he dinged it up.

My dad has probably 5-6 Rolexes plus another one from my other granddad, so someday more may be headed my way.  My dad wears one like this every day:

    Mens ROLEX President Day-Date Watch

All of them are a little too blingy for me.  I have a Stowa Klassic that I generally prefer. It looks good on a variety of straps and is more understated:

But generally I just wear my Garmin Vivoactive 3 every day.  It is comfortable and is a great running watch.

  10. This stat depends heavily on how you define "city".  Austin is actually the 10th biggest city in the US.  So it makes sense it would also be among the top-10 cities with listings over $1M.

On the other hand, the Austin metro area is only around the 30th biggest metro area in the US.  If we are a top-10 metro area in $1M listings but only top-30 in size, then that would paint a very different picture.

  11. If someone is actually funny we don't care where they are from.  Ricky Gervais is hysterical and is an equal opportunity offender.  John Oliver is not nearly as funny, but is clever enough that he keeps my attention despite being overly condescending.  Trevor Noah isn't very funny and isn't very clever.  He bores me.  So when he makes fun I just find myself saying "fuck off" in my head.
