  1. KInda comical to see Arlington fans tempting the BBGs like that when they're only two games up in August with the two-time world champs and four-time AL champs right on their heels and a red-hot Seattle team 5.5 out after winning seven straight.

A more immediate option is obvious and under consideration. If it happens, Houston would author a full-circle reunion with a familiar face.

The Astros’ most logical option to balance their bench is Jon Singleton, the franchise’s former top prospect who signed a minor-league deal in June and is dominating at Triple-A Sugar Land. This weekend at Yankee Stadium, Brown revealed the team is considering promoting Singleton amid his scorching start.

“We’ve had conversations and we’re thinking about it,” Brown said. “I don’t know how close we are, but I’ve had conversations about it and we’ll see where it goes from there. We’ve definitely had some conversations.”

Singleton is slashing .339/.455/.704 with 18 extra-base hits, 26 walks and 33 strikeouts across his first 143 plate appearances at Sugar Land. He has struggled in three brief big-league stints since 2014, including an 11-game cameo with the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this season, but Brown seemed to indicate the team will summon the 31-year-old slugger at some point in these final two months — perhaps quite soon.

“I think if he can come up here — and we’ll give him a shot — if he can come up here and hit the ball well and have quality at-bats, I think he’s a guy that Dusty can say ‘I want to get some more reps on,’” Brown said. “It will be a Dusty call at the end of the day. If we get him up here and Dusty really likes him, we’ll roll with him. If Dusty says I’m limited with this guy, it’ll be his call once we get him up here.”

at some point, he's gonna need some experience to get better there

and this here is the best argument for him playing every day. I'm not Team Maldy, I just repeat what has been reported and said by pitchers and insiders about Machete being the staff's QB and whatnot and how Diaz has to learn how to prepare to call games etc but he's getting there yadda yadda yadda. Diaz can only do this by playing more, not less. You cannot put his bat on the bench with Kessinger's in the lineup.

Fuck it, call up Singleton if you need to give Abreu a day off.

Julks had a really tough game a week or so ago.. He was in a small slump already, and hit like 4 balls on the screws that were caught by the OF.. I'm sure that's contributing to the mental aspect of his slump..

That being said, he can work out of it in AAA by playing EVERYDAY.. Singleton deserves a shot..

GIvien his history, I don't think anyone has faith this time will be different.  It would different if he hadn't of sucked with the Brewers this season.

he's a weird case though because he sucked so long ago and was probably brought up to the big leagues way before he was ready and now, at the age of 31, he's mashing AAA pitchers and pushing for another promotion. It's hard to draw too many conclusions from his most recent ML stint with Milwaukee because he only had like 29 AB before they DFA'd him because they needed a roster spot for Jesse Winker returning from the IL. He subsequently refused assignment to the minors and became a free agent.

The odds aren't great that he's anything but AAAA player, but who knows, maybe he's figured it out now that he's in his early 30's?

how do you quantify it?   By the way we measure success in baseball dude- runs scored and runs allowed.

    correlation is not causation.

How many WS rings does Yainer have? CHECK MATE.

But in all seriousness, I'm not wholly disagreeing because I want Yainer catching more not less, but he's not very good situationally with the bat and he is terrible against LHP. He needs to get better at working counts and not being such a free-swinger. His power is awesome and his exit velos are impressive so he will hit consistently. Machete is just terrible all around with the bat but he should always start against LHP over Diaz.

The belief that you know better than the pitchers who throw to these guys or the coaches/player development/analytics nerds who have built this baseball dynasty is evidence of you sniffing your own farts.

Facts are stubborn things. The staff allows more runs when Maldonado is catching. Now you can try to find reasons that explain that but you won't have much luck considering that Maldonado catches the better pitchers more often.

It's also a fact that the organization is very analytics-driven and has excelled at player development, so I'm of the opinion they have data and inside info about Maldonado/Diaz we don't. I think Diaz should be catching more but I am also confident that will be that case as he develops his defensive skills and builds rapport with the entire pitching staff and works on the intangibles that make Machete respected in the clubhouse.

Who fucking cares?  He catches better pitchers and his cERA is half a run higher. They are wrong. It means nothing.

trust means everything between pitcher and catcher. how do you quantify that?

I think the coaches/development staff/FO analysts/pitching staff know what they're doing. Y'all need to stop sniffing your own farts.

I don’t know who’s calling them, and I have no problem with. Maybe pitching coach?

I got no problem with who calls pitches, but with the talk about his game planning and studying, I would think he would have more input.

I’m not seeing shit. He looks to the dugout every single pitch. It’s annoying now.

Maldy is the one calling the pitches dude jfc

  10. It's almost like the Machete haters refuse to believe these players when it's been explained many times. Ffs, even Chandler tweeted an aggressive "let me dumb it down for you, stupid" recently in answering the Maldonado vs Diaz question.

I'm not saying I want Machete over Diaz, I'm just accepting the reality as explained by Astros pitchers and insiders. It is what it is.
