There's a very real thing called the "oil curse", the "curse of oil", or the "resource curse" that makes it extremely difficult for oil-dependent economies to diversify. When the price of oil is high, there's is absolutely no other industry that can compete in terms of wages, revenues, and general economic activity. When times are bad, the town, state, region, country, has no other (or very little) recourse for growing and diversifying its economy.

Of course, there are actions that can be taken to balance an economy: invest surpluses during the good times toward education and economic diversification efforts, but it requires an incredible amount of fiscal discipline to put that money toward a very slow ROI.

Texas has been very fortunate in the way we've invested our state acquired oil money by having the foresight to pump that money into the PUF, creating the incredible world-class university that most of us on this board are lucky to have access to. Moreover, we've used our wealth to pretty much "buy" certain industries. One prime example of that is Houston's incredible Texas Medical Center, making it the largest healthcare complex in the world. Dallas and Fort Worth put aside their silly rivalry to create DFW, which is largely responsible for the Metroplex being such a strategically important distribution hub. I'm positive there's a story to tell about TI. And, of course, look here in Austin where strategic investments and partnerships between UT and private industry created the tech economy we have here. Given our reputation for being reckless wildcatters, untrusty gamblers, and boastful braggarts, our past leadership was comprised of incredible stewards of our land's largesse.

By contrast, Alaska also has an oil fund for the benefit of state residents. What do they do with that? They just cut annual checks to individual households and hope the "market" takes care of itself. Of course, most residents there see it as a form of welfare check to help them stock up for winter when they can't hunt game.

This, I think, is one of the best examples of a distinctly American, or Texan, model for economic development. Sometimes long-term investments in your human capital can pay off in ways that were previously unimaginable but, unfortunately, most resource-dependent states/States don't show such foresight or discipline.

We, my fellow Texans, should be very grateful, and I sincerely hope we don't choose to go down the Louisiana, Oklahoma, or Alaska path to disinvestment, ignorance, and poverty.

Government never fixed anything.  Didn't you know that, libtard cuckflake?

US production is projected to continue to be dominated by PADD 3 and by light sweet crude (ie from tight formations).  Medium sour (Alaska and L48 offshore) is projected to fall from 30% of present production to 18% in 2050.

These fuckwits can't predict a crude draw vs build from one week to the next but they are making projections out to 2050?

I live in SW Florida so a lot of people in my community are retired have nothing better to do than get involved with other people's business. However, last week i got an email from next door with the subject line "Baby Ducks Killed". I though someone may have run over one of the families of duck in the neighborhood by mistake, nope. It seems that a family of duck landed in one guys pool and instead of lifting the ducklings out of the pool the guy drowned them. His neighbor heard the mother duck quacking and went to see what was going on, the guy said he didn't want any pets so he killed the ducklings.

Well the neighbor called the cops on the guy, when the cops arrived he denied it, but the found five dead ducklings in his bushes. He is now facing felony animal cruelty and endangerment charges and they are trying to determine the species of ducks as it may be a federally protected species, so federal charges are pending. So he may be facing jail time, I believe he is also a Canadian snow bird and if he gets a felony he may not be allowed back into the USA.

The morning after someone put some rubber ducks on his driveway with a note clearly written by a kid saying "Get your Ducks in a Row Sir", the duck killer has since put up cameras on his property.

Now the neighbor who reported him is losing her shit, she planted 5 crosses in her front yard as a memorial to the duck, which are no down. I am pretty sure the HOA told her to remove them.

Why am I not surprised this all happened in Florida?  But man, your neighborhood sounds cool af.

Grown-assed men that when referring to multiplication say something along the lines of "now just times the 3 by the 4 and you have your answer."

    "Times" it?

    Really?

"Times" is the opposite of "goes-intas".

Last year, as a club, the Astros struck out in 17% of their plate appearances, best in the league and a dramatic drop from 23% in 2016. So far we are at 25% in 2018. Will be interesting to see where that number settles. My guess is somewhere between the last two years.

Careful, you will get called an Arlington fan for pointing out things like this.
