I think the point is that this type of crap is not what Austin needs help with. I’d much rather them be at least busting up all the graffiti than hassling people for traffic violations.

I mean, this along with protecting the capital is pretty much all DPS does, right?

  2. ?

last season early on the stats said we shouldn’t have scored nearly as many goals as we did. Whether it was luck or over performance, as the season went on we had more and more trouble scoring at the rate we did at the beginning of the season.

I’m saying the dudes we have just aren’t good enough going forward. They over performed last year. We’ve given up more goals than anyone would like but our injuries and departures on the back line don’t make that surprising. We’ve scored 6 goals in 7 games. Thats the more concerning issue.

Makes sense why most of the contractor estimates we've seen last few years are "cost plus", less responsibility for the GC.

I'm doing a small kitchen remodel right now and looking at a few different estimates, is there anything specific I should look for in the contractors contract to protect my ass? There's some wording here and there I don't like but it looks fairly standard.

Just FYI, smaller jobs tend to be fixed fee because margin needs to be higher. When you get to bigger projects cost plus makes more sense for both parties. Could be you see more cost plus because of scope or costs.

The only thing the differentiates Austin from other Texas cities is the cost of living and the excessive amount of homeless people. Beyond that, there isn’t much special about the city (with the exception of some natural beauty, most of which is outside the city limits).

The Internet likes Tekton for basic handtools (wrenches, sockets, etc)

IMO you get him some Knipex pliers-wrenches, perhaps some gucci wera/wiha/pbswiss allen keys, and then if you really want to, give the rest of the balance as a gift card and he can buy what he likes.

Listen to this man, he's pre-med.  Those brands are tits for the tools mentioned.  Honestly, buy him some good shit.  I still use the sockets, pliers, wrenches that my dad gifted me when I was 18 and I'm approaching Gundy territory.  (and Dewalt miter and circ saw, those ones back in the day were tanks).  I've used them more than most but not professionally, and they were worth every penny.

  6. We have some sort of illness running through the house.  I was in better shape so basically wrangled kids most of the weekend, handled dinner, got the kids to bed etc.  I just got some work prep'd for the week and am headed to bed.

I go in and ask her if she's feeling any better.

W: Oh, yeah, I think my fever finally broke!

M: Great! When's the last time you took Motrin?  About 1 this afternoon when I gave it to the kids?

W: Oh, about 45 minutes ago...

I was able to watch as she figured out exactly what that meant.

  7. White oak has big open pores, so yeah I can see where it would be a bitch to clean out. That’s on GC or the paint sub. It sucks. I see why you’re upset, painter just wasn’t careful enough.

There are a fuck ton of stairs that were built since the 50s that are no longer to code. Which is why I say: If you don’t have kids/grandkids to worry about safety or you’re not selling soon, wgaf. With that said…that’s the GC’s job to rein in the designer before it hits y’all’s desk or have the conversation with all parties in advance of install.

Edit to add: it is kind of an easy code for inspectors to ding you on. It would be noticed by pretty much anyone.

For the contractors/inspectors out there do these stair rails violate Austin code?  It’s more than 7” on top and bottom. Within the 4” code in the middle

Designer sold us on these and we really like them but we’ve had two subs warn us now that they don’t think they are to code.  We have another issue that might have us forcing them to rip them out and do it again. But this would give us more ammo.

Correct, not to code. If you didn’t pull a permit, you can change it if you’re worried about small kids or could see yourself selling in a few years.

  9. My thoughts are the Air Force probably had some 19 year old painting this fucker with a laser to disable its intel gathering systems for the last few days. More of an exercise in boredom than anything else.

Was heading to Taco Deli this afternoon and all of Westlake Village still out.  They have the H‑E‑B up and running but everything else closed.  Sucks for those businesses.  Matt’s will be extra crowded tonight with Lupe’s closed.

Now it seems we are under a boil water notice.

Dude, I’m too drunk for your mistaken dates. Keep it current.
