I have read,  but have not confirmed, that the Morman faith is more prevalent in the military (percent wise) than the overall US population.  Mormons are called to serve, and many of them wanna join the Army instead of building houses in Guatemala.  Kinda cuts against the stereotype there.  As my Mormon buddy says, “We aren’t Amish.”

LDS are pretty common at IRS.  Part of it is their commitment to service, which may also explain the military participation.  Many I met were exceptionally civil and agreeable, but I found many of the men very sexist and sometimes quite promiscuous (maybe not so bad for Surly.)  Probably no more than evangelical youth pastors.

Very good show. Reminds me of Monk but more accessible.

I, Jack Wright is an excellent new show on Britbox, too.

There's so much to watch on that streamer. Up until the pandemic I didn't really care for British tv but between the pandemic and the severe decline in quality on netflix and hbo -- and almost total loss of shows on other US cable networks -- it's totally changed my opinion and viewing habits. I think @abuelo gringostarted a thread a few years back about British shows, if I'm not mistaken. I searched a couple months ago but couldn't find it.

I didn't start it, but with subscriptions to both Britbox and Acorn, I have read and added to it.

Kangaroos. Went there my freshman year. Back in the 80s when the drinking age was 18. There was an on-campus pub that served Foster’s.

In the late '50s, early '60s they had a live kangaroo mascot kept on campus.  Katie the Kangaroo. My grandmother lived down the street and we would walk down and see her.  Aunt had a maroon and gold plushie kangaroo from when she attended.

If this has been posted, I missed it, and yes, this study is several years old. But, despite the study examining nearly 100% of Danish children born within the study’s parameters, its conclusions have not settled the debate. Which is to be expected when medical research becomes politicized, and the law protects those spreading misinformation for political gain.

When it started, my roommate & I were having burgers at the Holiday House on The Drag.
Wondering what all the sirens were zooming by, we walked back through the covered passageway to the parking lot where some other “spectators” hollered at us to take cover.

That’s when we heard loud gunfire from the Tower, and looked up to clearly see him leaning over the parapet shooting down.
We only stayed there for a few minutes, then when Whitman moved around out of sight we drove out of the lot over to the Plantation House restaurant lot on 19th for a “safer” view.
Then we drove over to our West Campus apartment to watch it on live TV.
When we saw the white flag waving (by the cops on the observation deck) we ran from the apartment eastward on 24th to the Drag, down to the Co-op, then up the West Mall to the Tower, where hundreds of people had gathered & were milling around.
I saw an older guy, obviously a Texas Ranger in a suit - with Stetson and a badge on his belt - walking around with a Thompson. Also saw a Daily Texan student “reporter” with a notepad in hand and somewhat comically with an old Army helmet on his head.

I was out of town that summer after my freshman year and missed all the fun.  I heard it on the radio driving across the Denison Dam to my aunt's lake house (trailer) in Colbert OK.  Parents were a little scared about me returning in September, but I convinced them it was an aberration.

I miss the Plantation.  Wife and I liked their chicken fried steak (about once a semester.)  Used to get a late night (2 AM) omelet there with my page editor after putting the Texan to bed.

  7. Travis County Sheriff's Dept. found child porn on computers belonging to Mitchell Wasek, son of one of Buccee's co-founders.  He was previously indicted for felony invasive recording.  Although the KXAN story mentions an arrest warrant, it says he is not currently in custody or has not been arrested yet.  ???  Does that just mean he was previously arrested and is out on bail?

Son of Buc-ee's co-founder facing possession of child pornography charge

Previous charges mentioned on Tell Me About Texas A&M in 2023.

  8. One of the creators/writers is Joe Kelly, who is also a co-creator and writer for Ted Lasso.  Also wrote for SNL for one season.

    Der Sturmabteilungen, ja?

Once trump has his official paramilitary force that's only answerable to him and him alone, we will be in the "reign of terror" section of the holocaust memorial

Currently reading Shirer's Rise and Fall.  The SA is exactly what came to my mind when reading Jive Turkey's post quoting Brian Stelter.

Seconded.  I generally don't like flavored chips.  HEB had a dollar off on two packages of chips, so I thought I would try them. Very good.

  11. Similar to ArmyBrat, my grandkids are mostly no longer kids, but they are still one of my greatest delights.  The youngest is twelve and won't be for much longer.  The other three are in college.  Watching them grow up has been wonderful and much less stressful than raising their parents.

I still remember the oldest being the star of my retirement party when she was almost one year of age.  She will be 24 later this year.

Like Brat, no ggrands on the horizon.
