Never said it was the worst in the world. Of course countries with horrible evil dictators like Duterte are going to have gestapo systems. Is that how far we've fallen as a country that the best Americans citizens can do is compare themselves to autocratic shitholes?

Among developed democratic countries the US system is one of the worst. Tons of room for improvement. One easy one they could start is not publicly releasing any arrest info, including mugshot, until a person is indicted by a DA/grand jury. Having that shit released immediately in the social media age is condemning the innocent whenever it's a false arrest.

Fair enaough on the comparison take, but as for the "don't release the mug shots until..." Don't forget everyone has rights and some folks believe that if the state creates something, we, as the owners and beneficiaries of the state, get to see it immediately so long as it doesn't jeopardize an investigation. That's the core of both the problem, and the biggest benefit of our system versus the rest of the 1st world. Expediency for the state is not the only consideration. Frankly, I would rather be charged with a crime in this country than in most other 1st world countries. As a suspect here, you enjoy a lot more rights than you do in most other legal systems. A lot of people are pissed when a gulity person walks, but that is our system working. Entire texts books are dedicated to this subject, but in short, I still think we do a better job of balancing the rights of the accused and the rights of the alleged victims, and the obligations the state must meet to convict.

  2. BLK, Breakaway and Love Wheel. Three new to me record stores! Are any of them genre specific, or is it some of everything at all 3?

  3. A perfect criminal justice system does not and cannot exist. Cops do what they’re trained to do within their ability in bad situations. The immediate goal is for no one to get hurt or killed. Next is prosecution of those suspected of breaking the law. Suspects have rights. Alleged victims have rights. It is a pendulum that’s always moving. A real good idea is not to put your hands on a person you’re angry with, no matter what. You’re a pro athlete? Good, you can run from that no win really fast. It’s not fair that some women claim abuse that didn’t happen. It’s also not fair that I can’t run a sub 4.4 40. The fair is once a year in Dallas.

Even worse, probably cause is what some police officer thinks. They get cuffed, printed, photo'd, and locked up before anyone from the DA's office has anything to do with it. Then if the person has enough money they can pay to get out of jail until it gets sorted. If they don't then tough shit.

    The system is completely fucked

You could move. Explore the criminal justice systems around the world. Explain to a cop in, let’s say, Manila, that you have rights. They will listen respectfully while you opine on probable cause, then beat the soles of your feet with garden hose.

  5. As far as Austin area retail record stores, I have been going to Piranah in RR, and End Of An Ear on Ben White, near S. Congress/1st Street. Am I missing something? I know about Waterloo, but I hate engaging traffic to get to it.

Anyone else remember going to the record store on the drag at 21st after class? A Saigon eggroll and going in there are pretty fond memories.

  6. Please note I am not in favor of murder or agravated assault. I don't like that it seems to always be the man who has to sleep in jail. Sometimes the person who started all the shit and did the most assaulting gets to sleep in their own bed. That's still better than someone neading a funeral or facial reconstruction.

  7. In the "good old days" when the cops just made the parties go to separate rooms, and promise to stay away from each other until tomorrow, they would sometimes have to resopnd to the same address an hour later when the murder, or aggravated assault took place. Right or wrong, if the cops show up to a domestic squabble, and one of the parties says offensive contact took place, then somone goes to jail. Its how police chiefs and county sheriffs keep their jobs. They do not want to be the head of the entity that "could have prevented this tragedy if they had just done their jobs."

  8. Grew up in Houston and a Luv You Blue, die hard, Earl Campbell/Oilers fan. Much sad. Also, an Atros fan since I was 7, and althogh not a huge NBA fan, I came to enjoy Hakeem and that crew. I went to UT and was at the Cotton Bowl when a muffed punt cost us a MNC.

By staying loyal to the teams I identify with, I saw the Stros go to the WS and get swept. But then, since the Altuve times, I have been richly rewarded. I saw the Rockets at their peak win it all twice. I have seen my Longhorn football team win a MNC. Longhorn baseball is the Cadilac of college baseball.

My point is it all goes in cycles and you take the good with the bad, or you end up with a closet full of different t-shirts. The Cowboys are close. Longhorn football is getting close. Relax. Have a beer. If you're under 40, you will likely live to see your teams at the top. I'm pushing 60 and I want to live long enough to see Longhorn football at the the top again. Anything else is gravy.

  9. You can thumb through, but there are so many records spread out in several rooms. If you don't get it, that's fine. I've been thumbing through records since 1976. I know what I'm looking for and it is likely among the 60k records he has.

One of the jazz guys on YouTube mentioned him in a video. Cool to get more info on it. Thanks!

If you don't buy anything (but you will) walking around and taking in the true form of eccentric is pretty cool. There's not much of the real thing anymore, but this guy and his place are the real deal. He's really nice, too. Likes to hear about where and when you saw the artist, how the performance went, etc. He's got to be in his 80s by now.

  11. If anyone is in for a trip to Llano on a Friday or Saturday (only days he's open) you should go to Rats. Rats was a meat processing plant that an older gentleman owns now. He changed up the sign that read "Meats" so it reads "Rats" which stands for records and things strange. He is a retired software engineer who bought up lots and lots of collections, but everything he has is pre 1990. He has over 60,000 records. If you see electronics for sale on Craigslist in Llano, it is most likely some of the funky gear he has for sale. I have an original Beano album with a little sleeve damage (among others) that I paid $10.00 for.

Don't go looking to thumb through the records like at a record store. Go with a list. He knows where everything is but you would be hard pressed to figure out his system. Tell him what you're looking for and he will lead you through the labyrinth to the record. Lots of jazz, old R&R, C&W, classical... He has a lot of other interesting stuff as well, and his wife has a bookstore in town, also. They have lots of old documents, books, photos, etc. It is worth the trip, although it's only about 30 minutes for me.

No worrys about digital here, as everything is pre 1990. There's a Texas Monthly about him but I don't recall when it was in the mag.

I've been on a Samantha Fish kick lately.

I find this 4 years later. Thank you. I love finding stuff that's new to me. Especially a bad ass jam like this one. I am a little bored with the same music I've been listening to since 1975.

To get away from the album rock thing, may I suggest Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, Back to Back album.

  13. Son and I practiced for the TTZ tournament on Travis that was weekend before last. He pulls a 6lb girl and I get a 5lb 12oz. We're going to win some money on tournament day!

That Saturday a front passes. We catch two that keep for about 4.25 lbs. The winning team had 23 lb bag. Anyone who thinks golf is frustrating has never tried tournament bass fishing.

I have seen comments like this for the better part of a decade and I think we've forgotten what championship talent looks like. 30 future NFL players in 05 and we still barely won a championship. We need competent line play on both sides, a running game, a good QB, and some skill players that make plays when its time to make them. This year we had a running game and everything else was mediocre. We were stout against the run but couldn't get to the QB when it really mattered. We had zero big plays in the passing game when we needed them, and none of those dudes were able to turn short balls into long plays.

To move forward we have to have a legit pass rush. We have to get better at QB/pass protection, and we have to get more explosive outside. If we can do that we can win the conference and put ourselves in the mix.

This is not an unreasonable take. I would add the additional need for Sark to improve in-game adjustments. Also, the DB play was better at the end of the season. Continued improvement and some on field leadership there will be necesarry, too. If these thngs come to be and the wins total does not go up, then we need to look at the quality recruiting we are enjoying and decide if there is someone else who can take that talent higher. I don't think its time for that question, but we can't afford for the recruiting to drop off for two or three seasons.
We've seen that happen over and over. It puts everything back at square 1. I hate square 1.
