About 20-25 years ago Travis Heights (south Austin) had similar amounts of tree damage.  It was virtually impossible to drive the neighborhood.  I never did hear of a confirmed tornado, but whatever it was, the wind velocity was really high.

Was that from the storm that spawned the Cedar Park and Jarrell tornados? I was working at the Custom Sounds store that used to be on S. Congress and Academy when that storm hit. The straight line winds came right down Congress. Our storefront had two 4'x8' windows on the Academy side of the corner that had an aluminum strip between them that blew out and drove rain into the store like it had been shot out of a high pressure hose. Still can't believe the windows didn't break. There were limbs down and trees uprooted all over the place after that one.

Arkansas and A&M playing a good one, tied 0-0 bottom 10

Going to the 11th. Watching these two staffs deal makes me hate Pierce that much more.

That’s cool as shit. Luckily they stopped 2-3 days before they all needed new timing chains.

and probably 2-3 minutes before they needed new head gaskets

My 14yo son is getting into cars, as his 16th birthday approaches.  Recently he's decided he really loves the Toyota GR86 and its twin sister-car the Subaru BRZ.  They each feature a Subaru flat 4 as the power plant, so this hits close to home (maybe, in a year or so).

One of my son's best friends had one. Blew it up in about 6 months.

I know you, and I know where you come from.

Your daily driver will be this:

And I know you like to show off....that's a Cutlass SUPREME, baby.

My first car was a '73 Regal that looked JUST like this, only white. My grandfather gave it to me when I turned 16. It had a rust hole in the trunk you could drop a cooler all the way through, but it had a 455 Big Block Buick V8. You could floor it and watch the speedometer and gas gauge move in different directions.

Not sure I follow. This still looks “decent” to me

My Grandfather bought an 84 Regal that looked just like this Cutlass, and the 73 became his work car. He drove it to the Texico refinery in Port Arthur every day and by the time he gave it to me, the paint looked like it had been in a sandstorm.

Honestly, this is kinda where I'm gonna stick.  I have my old 99 F-150 4X4 fully up and running (and, for the first time in 10 years, registered and street legal).  I need a truck for maybe 2k miles a year - hunting, fishing, hauling stuff.  And when you consider the cost of a new truck with 4WD, and how expensive they are to repair....fuck that, I'll just keep this old beast running for another 20 years.  Ito contributes minimal pollution because it's my backup vehicle, not a daily driver.  I'm driving my mom's old (low mileage) little SUV now as my daily driver, but when I ditch that, I'll almost certainly be going at least to a hybrid.  So, I'll have a hybrid for 95% of my road miles, and a reliable truck for the other 5%.

And yeah, the truck is already faded, dented, and ugly, so....it's like a cybertruck already!

Yep, same. My 2017 Tundra is hopefully the last truck I'll ever buy. It's paid off, and it's the best truck I've ever owned. At some point in the future, I'd like to get a sporty little coupe to drive around town and for weekend getaways and the like. Hopefully in the next couple years there will be some plugin hybrid cars that fit the bill. Mercedes AMG has the C43, which has the type of powertrain I'm talking about...a turbo 4 with hybrid assist, 400HP, 30ish MPG and a 4 second 0-60...but it's fucking ugly. If BMW would offer a similar powertrain in an M car, I'd probably get on the waiting list for it right now.

Any parent that bitches about the time it takes to invest their kids in sports had better not bitch around cheer parents.  Oh boy.  Neighbor does that.  They travel the country.  Competitions that they have to spend 6-8hrs at for a 2 minute, 30 second routine.  No thanks.

    Swimming is a close second.

Son is a swimmer, daughter runs track. The worst "Cost per minute" had to be round trip airfare and 3 days in a hotel to watch your daughter run for 58 seconds at AAU Jr Olympics.

Both my kids thought they wanted to run/swim in college...until some of their older teammates got the opportunity and came home with stories about how much it sucked. As Brisket posted above, it's a huge time commitment, and unless you're Olympics level elite you'd almost always be better off having a traditional college experience.

But Slit Slam is still on since it’s an in-person (hehe) event, right?  I think it’s in Freeport this year, and there’s a connected redfish charter.

It’s handled blowing up all 4 tires from 10 psi to 35 psi after a day of off-roading. I have considered getting a small hand held that uses the same battery as my impact wrench as a back up.

Yes, pretty desolate out there without many trees. I can’t imagine how much dirt/rocks you’d need to pile up to use for a winch. I have seen matt’s off road recovery us big rocks to tie off with various levels of success. They have moved around some big rocks they were using for anchors. Maybe some spikes you can hammer into the ground?

    Huh, Learned something new today.
searched on google and sure enough “land anchors” are a thing

Depending on what kind of ground you're on, I've seen guys use a spare tire as an anchor point. Dig a deep and narrow hole, run the recovery strap through the center of the wheel, then drop it vertically into the hole.

Technology advances faster than I can follow, but an ultralight--gas, electric or otherwise--with a range of 1,300-1,500 km seems improbable.

It really just needs to be a flying gas tank with a small incendiary  warhead and a radio controller. Probably a 2 cylinder or 3 cylinder rotax knockoff. Just do the math on fuel consumption and build accordingly. Shit, Google says a Cessna 172 has a range of around 1,000 Km
