  1. McCarthy defends Jordan after he loses on first round of votes for speaker

From CNN's Manu Raju and Kristin Wilson

Former Speaker of the House Rep. Kevin McCarthy speaks to reporters as he leaves the House chamber after Republicans failed in their first attempt to elect Rep. Jim Jordan to be the new House speaker, at the Capitol in Washington, DC, on Tuesday.

Former Speaker of the House Rep. Kevin McCarthy speaks to reporters as he leaves the House chamber after Republicans failed in their first attempt to elect Rep. Jim Jordan to be the new House speaker, at the Capitol in Washington, DC, on Tuesday.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy defended Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan after Jordan lost the first round of votes for the speakership, saying Jordan β€œhas just as many votes as I had on the first round.”

β€œThe difference here is we have rules and we can sit down and talk to the other members and be able to move forward,” he said, brushing away claims by Jordan allies that he was in striking distance when 20 Republicans voted against him. β€œWhat I saw was the exact same vote I got when I ran and I became speaker.”

McCarthy said that unlike in January, the chamber can pause to allow discussions to happen between members.Β

β€œNow we have rules. We don’t have to be stuck on the floor,” he said, and blamed β€œevery single Democrat” who he said β€œvoted to stop one branch of government.”

β€œWe’ll go sit down, we’ll talk to those who have a difference of opinion and come back,” he said.

I have no idea why that appears brown in the photo, but it’s tomato purΓ©e with chili powder and cumin. It came out of the jar red. Maybe the fat from the meat colored it?

I’m not culinary purist at all and have thought of chili being something that has a tomato base and chili powder, and after that it’s built to preference.

    Whatever. It was delicious.

Actually, the hardcores here will tell you that it shouldn't have tomato in it either.

I’m legitimately curious why it’s universally viewed as outside the chili realm. The bacon? The ribeye? The celery? It’s, meat, onions, peppers, tomato purΓ©e, chili powder, and cumin at its bones.

It definitely will be at a stew consistency after 6 hours on the smoker.

The extra ingredients is part of it (though my apologies for thinking you had green beans and carrots in there).Β  To me though, it's really the lack of incorporation of ingredients.Β  Among "purists" (a loaded term that doesn't even have a true consensus), I think there's an expectation that, when you look at a finished chili, all you see is essentially beef in what looks like a red gravy- regardless of whether you're using fresh ingredients or powders.

@1978hornΒ offered a beautiful example of this on the last page.

That was my take on it anyway.Β  Who knows, and -more importantly-Β  who the fuck cares?Β  Was it delicious?Β

I used to be "that guy" who would run with purist takes based on rudimentary knowledge of standards and quality ("Don't put beans in chili"; "Never let soap even touch your cast iron"; "Quality beer must be stored in a bottle", etc.).Β  Now I apply a simpler approach.... "Did it work" and "Was it good".Β

Is your name jade? Where’s fat tony?

Jade's (whatever-that-was) looked like a toilet bowl after the stomach flu.Β  ISU's contribution looks yummy.Β  Is it chili as we know it? Of course not.Β  But this is a 24 page thread. It can handle a diversion.Β Β
