  1. Group aligned with Freedom Caucus is behind pro-Jordan pressure campaign

    From CNN's Melanie Zanona

The Conservative Partnership Institute β€” a group headed up by former Freedom Caucus Chair Mark Meadows, who is Jim Jordan’s close ally β€” has been an active player in the intense, outside pressure campaign aimed at boosting Jordan’s speakership candidacy, sources tell CNN.Β

CPI has been coordinating calls and helping strategize with right-wing activists about ways to apply pressure on holdouts and whip up support for Jordan, sources say.

Jordan has denounced the threats and harassment some of his detractors are facing, and has denied any involvement in the right-wing intimidation tactics. But CPI is very closely tied to the Freedom Caucus, which even holds their weekly meetings at CPI’s headquarters.Β

There’s growing anger among the holdouts over the bullying they are facing from some of Jordan’s allies on the right, and they say they are disappointed with Jordan’s response β€” which is only hardening their opposition.Β

Rep. Don Bacon tells CNN: β€œJordan and his team are in denial over the threats and harassment his supporters are doing. Jordan’s response has been tepid.”

More of a "wow, he turned into a good actor" than a "no way is that the same person"

He was always a great actor.

Here's a quick article about his hiatus and return:

Quan is still close friends with several members of theΒ GooniesΒ cast likeΒ Sean AstinΒ andΒ Corey Feldman, but primarily Jeff Cohen, who fans know as "Chunk." Cohen is now a successful entertainment lawyer who represents Quan, and was of course involved in his contract forΒ Everything Everywhere All at Once.

"We'll be friends for life. He's myΒ GooniesΒ brother," says the actor. "In fact, my [Everything Everywhere] producer told me a really funny story the other day. He said never in his life did he think that he would have to talk to Chunk to get Data to be in his movie. I thought that was hilarious."

I'm wondering how many surlys actually believe scouting future opponents is unethical or illegal in some form or another? It's okay to watch videos but not to go to the games? It's only okay to watch videos if someone else takes them? What if the game is on TV - can you not watch it? Is it okay to watch it but not record it?

    Β

My understanding is that the rule was actually enacted as an equitability/ cost saving measure in (I think) 1994.Β  What was happening at the time is that the big dogs were sending scouts in-person to do this kind of recon, but it was viewed as an issue of the haves vs the have-nots.Β  Notre Dame could send staff to Sister Mary's of the Poor games to pick apart their process, but Sister Mary's couldn't afford to do the same which, they say, created a competitive imbalance.Β Β

That's why film and in-game scouting is fair game, but advanced in-person scouting is not.Β

  4. McCarthy defends Jordan after he loses on first round of votes for speaker

From CNN's Manu Raju and Kristin Wilson

Former Speaker of the House Rep. Kevin McCarthy speaks to reporters as he leaves the House chamber after Republicans failed in their first attempt to elect Rep. Jim Jordan to be the new House speaker, at the Capitol in Washington, DC, on Tuesday.

Former Speaker of the House Rep. Kevin McCarthy speaks to reporters as he leaves the House chamber after Republicans failed in their first attempt to elect Rep. Jim Jordan to be the new House speaker, at the Capitol in Washington, DC, on Tuesday.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy defended Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan after Jordan lost the first round of votes for the speakership, saying Jordan β€œhas just as many votes as I had on the first round.”

β€œThe difference here is we have rules and we can sit down and talk to the other members and be able to move forward,” he said, brushing away claims by Jordan allies that he was in striking distance when 20 Republicans voted against him. β€œWhat I saw was the exact same vote I got when I ran and I became speaker.”

McCarthy said that unlike in January, the chamber can pause to allow discussions to happen between members.Β

β€œNow we have rules. We don’t have to be stuck on the floor,” he said, and blamed β€œevery single Democrat” who he said β€œvoted to stop one branch of government.”

β€œWe’ll go sit down, we’ll talk to those who have a difference of opinion and come back,” he said.

I have no idea why that appears brown in the photo, but it’s tomato purΓ©e with chili powder and cumin. It came out of the jar red. Maybe the fat from the meat colored it?

I’m not culinary purist at all and have thought of chili being something that has a tomato base and chili powder, and after that it’s built to preference.

    Whatever. It was delicious.

Actually, the hardcores here will tell you that it shouldn't have tomato in it either.

I’m legitimately curious why it’s universally viewed as outside the chili realm. The bacon? The ribeye? The celery? It’s, meat, onions, peppers, tomato purΓ©e, chili powder, and cumin at its bones.

It definitely will be at a stew consistency after 6 hours on the smoker.

The extra ingredients is part of it (though my apologies for thinking you had green beans and carrots in there).Β  To me though, it's really the lack of incorporation of ingredients.Β  Among "purists" (a loaded term that doesn't even have a true consensus), I think there's an expectation that, when you look at a finished chili, all you see is essentially beef in what looks like a red gravy- regardless of whether you're using fresh ingredients or powders.

@1978hornΒ offered a beautiful example of this on the last page.

    Β

That was my take on it anyway.Β  Who knows, and -more importantly-Β  who the fuck cares?Β  Was it delicious?Β

I used to be "that guy" who would run with purist takes based on rudimentary knowledge of standards and quality ("Don't put beans in chili"; "Never let soap even touch your cast iron"; "Quality beer must be stored in a bottle", etc.).Β  Now I apply a simpler approach.... "Did it work" and "Was it good".Β
