  1. i also watched it a couple weeks ago. was familiar with his music but didn't know his whole story. was pretty shocking how badly those movies fucked him up, music wise. it also didn't really address why he never told col. parker to fuck off. seems like he was pretty content with those movie paychecks rolling in. the little jam session for the 1968 special with him and his band sitting in a circle was good.

  2. all them witches, mastodon, primus at cota friday night. emptiest i've ever seen that place. lawn was closed off, upper seats were maybe 1/4 full and the lower seats and pit were mostly full.

it's impossible to get to this shit venue by 7:00pm so we missed all but one song of all them witches. they sounded good.

the sound for mastodon was very muddy. they played lots of stuff off the new album. i've come around on some of those songs, thought steambreather was really good. wish they could've played longer.

the sound was great for primus. played 4 or 5 old songs then played the entire new album, which clearly nobody gave a shit about. it was basically a 7 song piss break, a fair number of people actually left at that point. then they played some more old tunes. they sounded great, even the new stuff had interesting moments, particularly with claypool on upright bass.

  3. just saw NIN is playing a festival in san antonio in the at&t center parking lot this September. a couple other decent bands playing. probably going to that because NIN, but god damn what a terrible venue.

  4. in 2011 during sxsw i saw jason isbell and trampled by turtles at swan dive. there were about 30 people there. they are too jamgrass for my taste but it was a good show.

  5. polygondwanaland is an interesting record because they released all the manufacturing rights and encouraged fans/record labels to press their own version of the album. there are a shit ton of different versions out there.

  6. saw jack white last night at austin360/cota. it was a phone free show, they locked up phones in little neoprene pouches that you kept with you and then unlocked at the end of the show. i didn't want to deal with that shit so i left my phone in the car. played about 1/3 white stripes songs and the rest was his solo stuff, i think maybe there was 1 raconteurs song in there. his band consisted of a drummer, bass player, and 2 keyboard players. i thought the 2 keyboards, combined with his guitar tone, made the overall sound a little too heavy on the high end. he played about 20 different guitars over the course of the night. i'm not a big white stripes fan...i thought the full band treatment might change my mind on those songs but it didn't. thought the songs off the new album were a lot better live. he's clearly a talented guy and it was interesting watching them play so many different styles of music, there were moments of greatness but ultimately it left something to be desired.

  7. i never really understood the mono debate until i listened to those beatles mono re-releases, damn they sound good. granted, abbey road isn't one of those as it was recorded in stereo.

  8. the resurgence of vinyl is cool for new releases, but kind of sucks for buying used albums. i used to be able to pick up just about anything used for under $10...now that's a rare find.

Brian Jonestown Massacre was meh. They were better a year ago at Mohawk. Per usual, Anton bitched at the rest of the band for fucking up every other song.

that dude is unbearable to listen to, and the main reason i skipped that set.  i don't understand the fascination the black angels have with bjm.

  10. saturday:

tweak bird- sibling guitar/drum garage psych duo. very loose and rough around the edges. not bad.

dead meadow- oozed out their distinctive, slow style of stoner rock. they have a different drummer than the last time i saw them, he has a strange over exaggerated style but i liked his playing better than the last guy. i like their latest album and was hoping to hear a few more songs off that record. good set though.

vuelveteloca- chilean psych band. they were good but not all that memorable.

oh sees- one of the best sets of the weekend. tons of energy both from the band and crowd. the two drummers thing is so good.

    sunday:

wooden shjips- they sounded great. such a chill, smooth droning sound with bursts of guitar. very hypnotic.

rattlesnake milk- twangy west texas cow punk. they've got a good sound going, looking forward to their album.

billy king and the bad bad bad- they didn't have a bass player and didn't sound nearly as good without the low end. sounds like they're currently looking for someone to fill that role.

acid mother's temple- my favorite set of the weekend. crazy japanese men playing self described "extreme trip music". the set ran the gamut from slow spacey drones to complete shredding anarchy. they played their dicks off and it was awesome. also, extremely fucking loud.

  11. Moondoggies at Radio coffee. Their new album is good. It was a free show and there were only about 10 people in attendance. They're playing there again tonight, y'all check em out. They sounded great, pedal steel was perfect.

  12. a giant dog- i can see the appeal, but very much not my thing.

parquet courts- they were good but their set was too long. could have condensed it down to 30 minutes and enjoyed it a lot more.

ty segall- mostly songs from the new album. i know that's kind of his thing but i wish he would play a few more songs off earlier albums. despite that, it was an excellent show. they are very good at rocking out. definitely enjoyed the lucifer sam cover that they threw into the middle of one of their jams. capacity crowd at stubbs usually means a complete shitshow, but where i was at least everyone was cool.

  13. a couple piss stories:

jazz fest in nola around 2007...saw a concert on the riverboat cajun queen, which had extremely inadequate restroom facilities for a bunch of people slamming beers. when we pulled into the dock everyone made a beeline for the nearest pisser, which was an old fashioned trough. someone had thrown a bunch of paper towels in the trough and they were clogging up the drain, which meant there was about a foot of stagnant piss sitting in there. as i was washing my hands a dude came bursting through the door and a column of puke erupted out of him and into the trough...splashing stagnant piss directly back into his face. my god it was a horrendous thing to witness.

bonnaroo 2002, there was a plywood wall at the main stage area that became the de facto pisser once the sun went down. the ground eventually got saturated and it turned into a big mud pit that people were pissing into. after the final show that night we're walking by this piss hole and there are several spun out wookies rolling around in the mud like it's a fucking kiddie pool.

string cheese incident and tenacious d at waterloo park in 2002, this was a few months before i turned 21. me and my buddy, knowing we couldn't drink at the concert, got loaded on jim beam in my dorm room at jester and walked over to the concert. we smoked a joint during tenacious d and my buddy started struggling. he passed out on the ground for a while sitting indian style with his head in his hands. at some point he woke up and puked into his own lap and then passed out again, covered in puke. multiple people stopped to ask me if he was ok...then promptly asked if they could take a picture. these were the days before phone cameras, so if you're one of the roughly 25 folks who has a picture of my buddy passed out with puke in his lap i would very much like a copy.

  14. qotsa at austin360/cota last night. the opening band, wolf alice, was awful. the qotsa set was over 2hrs long and more than half of the songs were drawn from the last 2 albums...so not really an ideal setlist but that's really my only complaint. they sounded great and the light show was simple but effective. their live show has been on another level since drummer, jon theodore, joined the band a few years ago. he definitely adds a new dimension to their sound...and his solo during no one knows was pretty great as far as drum solos go. you can't quit me was the highlight for me, they jammed the shit out that extended outro and i fucking love it when they incorporate the lap steel. wish they would have included at least one song from rated R.

  15. welp, that sucks.

The Gary Clark Jr. concerts scheduled to take place Wednesday, June 13; Thursday, June 14; and Friday, June 15 have been rescheduled due to circumstances beyond control.

The newly scheduled dates are Monday, December 3; Tuesday, December 4; and Wednesday, December 5.

  16. i'm generally a fan, but i find it very easy to see how if you don't like their music you would find their personalities obnoxious. like, hey these guys suck but they act like they're putting on the best rock show in the world, fuck them. definitely seen bands that come across that way. again, i don't feel that way but i can very easily see how someone could.

  17. Easily Red Rocks. Hollywood Bowl is pretty cool too. Still need to get to the Gorge and the Greek. As far as Austin...the old Backyard was the best. Currently Moody/ACL Live is the winner. The Parish is also a great venue but they never have any bands that are worth a shit.

  18. Saturday night at Beerland:

The Boleys- 3 sibling power trio from Florence, TX. Had kind of a Ty Segall psych punk thing going on. Not bad, definitely have potential.

Teevee- 4 piece from Austin. Droning psych with some good hooks and lots of noise. Will definitely be checking them out again.

Peyote Coyote- Aside from having a great name, they also sound pretty good.  Fuzzed out garage rock with some psych surf sounds mixed in there and good bluesy lead guitar.
