  1. Here is the problem with the 5,000 teacher raise and why it is the wrong way to tackle this problem. First, it is only for the next two years. The legislature has done this twice in the past (10 and 20 years ago) where they funded a raise then put it on districts to fund it after those two years. Many districts (aisd) would be in no financial position to carry it forward after that. There could be enough pressure to keep funding it, but I don’t trust legislators or Texas voters enough to bet on it. The other problem is that it doesn’t address the other major funding issues in education. We have many employees that make less than a living wage and this will do nothing for them. It also makes weird dynamics such as more than half of my teachers would make more than me (AP) even though I work more days, have more certifications, etc. I don’t really care, they deserve the money, but it will be hard to get people to take on extra days responsibilities, and pressure and they get a pay cut for their trouble. The same problem would exist for counselors, diagnosticians, etc. I understand the concerns that districts will become top heavy with the money and not really pass it along to teachers. They just need to give the districts the money and make them set aside a certain portion that must go to teachers.
  2. My brother is a supertaster to the extreme. Diet consists mostly of breads and cheese. No meat so I would say he’s a vegetarian but he doesn’t like vegetables either. Not quite sure how he is still alive.
  3. How hard is the language barrier?
  4. These people aren’t receptive to new information and will never change their mind. All you can do it beat them at the ballot box enough to minimize their influence. It’s already happening in the Texas House.
  5. Also, are you Asian?
  6. The per student allotment should go up either way, which will help. The senate bill funds schools based on achievement with low income students weighted more. There are some unintended consequences with this but I think it would work out significantly better for AISD. Basically anything but the current system would be an improvement.
  7. Property taxes. There will be a specific increase for voters to approve.
  8. Those were paid for with bonds for that specific purpose that were voted on by the taxpayers. The water park was paid for with general education funds....aka Austin’s recapture money.
  9. This year AISD was forced to reduce custodians per campus and did away with lunch monitors all together. Teacher salaries have stagnated for years and are far behind the other metro areas. 10 years and a masters degree will not crack 50k/yr. La Joys ISD on the border just built a water park. The current system is such trash that it should be scrapped altogether. My goal for this cycle is just for funding to increase enough that some of my teachers can give up their second job.
  10. In FY2019, AISD anticipates the district will submit $669.6 million to the state in recapture funds. This amount is expected to increase by $115 million in FY2020, as a result of a projected increase in the district’s taxable property value and tax collection and the recalculation of the state funding formulas. From FY2002 to FY2019, AISD will have paid the state of Texas more than $3.7 billion in recapture payments.
  11. The senate education committee voted and fast tracked their bill today. Full senate will vote tomorrow. Both the senate and house bills would be an improvement. Just hoping the final version doesn’t become worthlessly watered down. Just as a reminder, AISD pays the same amount into recapture as it does for all salaries in the district combined. It’s roughly 46% of the budget....just gone. Desperate for this mess to get fixed.
  12. It’s not just the 12 seats, it’s the fact that a lot were in the burbs. Plenty of pubs see the writing on the wall if they don’t work on property taxes and education. Unfortunately you are right about Patrick and things won’t really change until his is gone.
  13. Looks like the senate education committee is going to vote on the education bill tomorrow morning. The house is trying to tie their property tax relief bill to the education bill they already passed. I can honestly say that this has been a really good session for the house. I completely expect the senate to fuck things up.
  14. I’ve been busy at work and have lost track of the education bill that went to the senate. I assume no news means they are quietly butchering it.
  15. Harassing strangers for wearing what they want. Classy.
  16. The commercial with him standing next to a 50s pickup was right in the Texas GOP voters wheelhouse. Yearning for yesteryear with a good ole boy who “gets it”. Just got done clearing some brush when the camera rolled up. Put an R next to his name and it’s game over. I wish MJ would run against him instead of Cornyn. Bad ass military vet vs a giant puss.
  17. Was just about to post this. Their lunch tacos are solid. Much better breakfast options elsewhere.
  18. I completely agree. The only thing I might change is to add some media appearances in order to drive people to his local events. You have to have some star power to get people in large numbers.
  19. I’ve paid for the real stuff. It sucks.
  20. I don’t have a lot of money to give to politics so I’ve started only giving to local Texas races where my money would make a difference. Suburban Texas house races are a great place to start for people that want to get into this and feel like they are making an impact. Bucy, a Democrat, won my district which is made up of western round rock and cedar park. He’s been in the legislature fighting hard for education in his first term. The house could look very different in a few cycles if we get more people like him in there.
  21. That’s a nice way of saying student consequences are confidential and I don’t want to lose my job, especially if that student was in special education. I have parents hitting me up all the time to know what ever happened to this or that kid. I can’t say shit. Edit to ask if you a parent or teacher. I would tell a teacher that has an educational interest in the student.
  22. Do expunged records typically show up in a background check? Also, wasn’t he acquitted? I always check social media on my hires but most are locked down, as they should be.
  23. What part of Florida is Pennsylvania in?
  24. Ribs were good when I went. Been a few years though.
