  1. Based on your list you like high end food, I went to L’ATELIER de Joël Robuchon last weekend and it was pretty phenomenal.

Love l’Atelier and a great recommendation. It’s always consistent and well done no matter which city you’re in. We’ve hit it several times over the years (used to live in London) so will keep that one on the list if nothing else pans out.

  2. You are doing some upscale shit, how about casual and comfort food for the birthday?

    Emmy Squared for Detroit Pie?

Casual is more the scene we are looking for coming off the previous dinners. Not looking for the stuffy, white table cloth meal for a 40th dinner. I was thinking sushi since something a bit lighter may also be in order and will also check out .Emmy Squared.

What about a good place for drinks after? Something nice but not too exclusive and no $1000 bottle service places. Definitely open to locations from the Village up to NoMad would work.

  3. Alright folks, I need some recs for a lively and fun dinner and drinks on one night in NYC  (Day 3 below) in late March, which also happens to be my wife's 40th.  It is a Saturday, so many places are already booked up.  I lived in the city about 20 years ago, but now find that I just don't know it nearly as well as I used to.  Here's what I currently have booked:

Day 1:    dinner at Gabriel Kreuther, after catching Network w/ Bryan Cranston at the Belasco theatre

Day 2:   dinner at Eleven Madison

Day 3:   Bday night - need recs for dinner and drinks

Day 4:  Lunch at Carbone; dinner open

Day 5: Lunch at Frenchette; fly out in the evening

For Day 3, I was thinking about Shoku for sushi.  Any thoughts?

LOL at the neg rep.  Didn't realize I was crossing a line on this wholesome and tightly focused thread.

Nah, was a confused rep more than a neg rep.  Although the bad Martha Quinn joke was certainly worthy of a neg rep...

Welp, I pulled the trigger yesterday.  These pictures are shit, but this watch is a stunner.  I had an isofrane on my SKX and didn't fully appreciate how much larger that made the watch wear.  This feels very comfortable and doesn't seem to wear as big as the 007.  The guy from WUS was very nice and knowledgeable about everything on this watch and just watches in general.  Totally painless process that allowed me to purchase much more watch than if I'd been buying new.

Thanks for all of the advice and thoughts.

Well done.  Wearing mine today as well.  I love that watch.  Wife got it for my bday around 10 years ago and still one of my favs.  Wear it in good health!

  6. I'm in the market for a new watch and think that I'm going to make a leap up this time around.  Thanks to this thread on TOS, I started with the Maratec mid pilot and then got a SKX007 that I'm still wearing every day.  But the SKX is losing more than a minute every day and is looking a little beat up these days.  I'm having a hard time figuring out what I want and what will be a good fit for me as I don't ever take my watch off.  I put an Isofrane on the SKX and very rarely take it off unless I'm playing golf.
I had my mind made up on a Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT for the longest time, but I got cold feet and now I've started looking again and have been running down the rabbit hole on a bunch of different brands/styles.  I like the looks of Nomos' stuff, but they do seem a little delicate and some of the comments upthread have spooked me a bit.  There are a few different Sinn options that I like, but not being able to try one on anywhere makes that a little tough.  I really like the blue faced Milgauss but have always thought that I would stay away from Rolex when I made a big purchase - mainly to do something a little different.  I'm drawn to the Panerai Luminor watches, but I'm not sure if they would look too big on my wrist.  The main one I've been looking at is not as thick as the SKX, but probably would wear a little bigger with the crown guard and pillow shaped case.  The IWC below is more than I want to spend, but damn it looks fine.

I know I'll probably have to change up my watch wearing habits if I spend this much, but do you guys have any other ideas or things I should be considering?  You a-holes are the reason why I even became interested in watches, so I'd appreciate any other thoughts.  Also, would Jomashop be a decent place to buy?  I'll probably look for whatever I end up deciding on used first, but I don't know if I'll be able to find what I'm looking for on watchuseek.

IWC all the way. Check out the DavidSW site. He had one last weekend that I think was pre-owned but the price was good.

  7. Ah, ok, now it makes sense.  I know nothing about the YC2.
I have this one and was wondering if I was some kind of doucher for it.

Only a half doucher. Just kidding, of course. That was too easy

Any good spots in Greenway Plaza?

Eunice looks interesting. Tony's is solid, but nothing exciting.

I'm also looking for happy hour recommendations. Going to Kirby Icehouse all the time is getting old.

Had dinner at Eunice a few days before Christmas with some friends.  Thought it delivered well.  Menu is small, but everything we had was spot on.

  9. Would like to get the points on the credit card, and then pay that off with the slush fund. But I get what you're saying and they may be a little more willing to deal if its cash vs credit since they already eat some of the fees.

You can almost always get 2-5% off paying cash. Doubt your credit card points are worth the floor on that discount.

  10. ADs can work on price if you pay cash instead of credit. Or if they have something they want or need to move. Sales tax is more difficult these days if buying new. If you have an AD in your state, it’s unlikely you can buy out of state and save the sales tax.

I bought my Overseas from the boutique in Costa Mesa and saved 5% on sales tax by wiring the cash but still had to pay the Texas sales tax.

Couldn’t find the watch in the US and didn’t want to mess with international sellers on Chrono24 with the uncertainty over customs and duties.

I can't stop laughing about the fact that, after saying he'd be getting the biggest stadium in Texas, he's at the fucking Astroarena. It's too good.

He’s going to need to wrap things up quickly at the Astroarena next week so they can make room for the boat show

  12. My man.

I am seriously considering selling all my other watches because I wear my Overseas every day.

I may end up in the same place. I have a low end hublot and a GP that I rarely wear anymore. Love the 3 straps (SS, rubber and gator) that come with the latest Overseas so it gives a lot of different looks.

  13. That's a nice choice as well.  Still would have gone the PP route, personally, though.

That was the plan originally but can’t pay $50k on the grey market for a $30k watch. Thought I had something in London that was going to work but didn’t pan out.
